George P. Bush Credits Dad, Uncle, and Grandpa With "Thoughtless Public Service" at Newport Beach Gala

This past Friday, the Hispanic 100--that group of lovable OC vendidos--held their annual gala at the Balboa Bay Club. I was supposed to go, but had a prior commitment, and it sucks because I was really looking forward to getting drunk with wabs who, unlike my progressive wab friends, have no qualms about enjoying life because they can actually afford to pay three figures for some extra-extra añejo tequila crushed by virgins from Los Altos de Jalisco.

And it sucks that I didn't go, because I missed a doozy of a family Freudian flub by George P. Bush, son of Jeb, nephew of George W., and grandson of George H.W., the brownie who was once pegged to save the GOP until that coño Marco Rubio came along.

OC Weekly Lays Off Staff Writer :-(

Man, God sure knows how to fuck with you: just one day after dominating the OC Press Club Awards with the type of reporting that led the New York Times to describe us as a "lively journal," the numbers people came to me with something I feared might happen: I needed to lay off a staff writer.

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK :-(

No real mystery as to why: the paper ain't as big as it used to, due to the Great Recession and the Brave New World of digital ads blah blah blah. Worst part was that every single staffer we had is AWESOME, so I had to decide who'd leave by relying on the eternal Weekly tiebreaker: seniority.

Sorry, Josh Dulaney :-(.

But before ustedes at Calvary Chapel and $cientology rejoice too much...

Introducing OC Weekly's New Commenting System

If you're one of our readers who reads past the headline and the pretty picture
at the top, you
troll
may notice we have a nifty little commenting forum below each article and slideshow. It's a pretty lively place--a perfect complement to this "lively journal." Racism, intelligent discourse, spam for cheap Prada bags; it's all there.

Well, we've recently renovated the commenting section. It's bigger, faster, stronger. Introducing LiveFyre.

OC Weekly Dominates 2012 OC Press Club Awards with 16 of 'Em!

The gnome, at his new home. Are you following us on Instagram yet? Do it now!
Last night, the Orange County Press Club held its annual awards ceremony at Encore Dinner Theater in Tustin, and in-between a hoppin' swing music set, a pretty good four-course dinner, reporters gossiping, and way too many smoke breaks to count, there were awards handed out--and, surprise, surprise. your favorite infernal rag dominated. Like last year. And the year before. And the year before that.

This year, we took home 16 awards, including nine first-place trophies. Second place in total awards was the Orange County Register, with nine.

And our winners are...

Headline: 11 Muslim Students Charged in UCI Protest (Pt. 2)

Comment by EVILTWIN
: Jury members, remember 9/11

Comment by TUBTHUMPER: I'm so sick of these muslims thinking their crap don't stink. Ship them all back where they came from, we don't need them here. Religion is free here and not controlled, they have to remember where they are before they start acting up.

Forgive Him Father for He Has Sinned: A Phil Aguilar Web Exclusive

phil-aguilar-oc-weekly-175.jpg
Weekly cover boy Phil Aguilar
It's been over two years since Phil Aguilar, founder of the Anaheim-based Set Free Church, and several members of his motorcycle ministry, the Set Free Soldiers, found themselves in a brawl with a couple of Hells Angels.

A few weeks after the fight, in which a member of Aguilar's entourage (who is now serving eight years in prison for attempted murder) allegedly stabbed one of the Angels, more than 100 cops from several law enforcement agencies raided Aguilar's home and arrested him and several family members.

Assuming you are 18 years or older, you can watch video of the fight, which was captured by a security camera at the Newport Beach bar Blackie's By the Sea right after the jump.

Milo Shiff: The witch on aisle five.
This week's cover story is about a Newport Beach grocery store greeter who happens to be a witch--and who happened to take offense when his store set up a talking witch decoration for Halloween.

Curious as to what the offending fake witch actually said and what it actually looked like?

More on OC's Reinvigorated Gay-Rights Movement

OCECEQCAarchercasdanielelizabethfelicity.jpg
Jennie Warren / OC Weekly
A few ideas I couldn't quite fit into this week's cover story on gay-rights activism in Orange County:

- LGBT-rights doesn't necessarily mean LGBT: Most of the LGBT activists working in Orange County told me that one of the most remarkable thing about the network that has developed because of Prop. 8 is that it includes a ton of "straight allies." Alex Gorman--the guy in the story wearing the nun costume--is one. So is Felicity Figueroa, the Orange County Equality Coalition's membership chair, as are a number of other board members. Groups that don't have marriage equality as their stated mission, like Americans United for Separation of Church and State, have also played a big role in activism here.

- OCEC is full of newbies. There's an old guard in Orange County gay activism. People like Jeff Letourneau, Harvey Liss, Misha Houser, Zoe Nicholson and even Weekly contributor Dave Barton--as well as groups groups like the Elections Committee of the County of Orange and institutions like The Center OC--paved the way in the 1980s and 1990s with their work on AIDS awareness, gay visibility and the opposition of maniacs like Bill Dannemeyer. They all remain involved in some way, but one of the noteworthy things about gay activism since Prop. 8 has been the emergence of completely new leaders--most of whom show up in this week's cover story.

- You can see it all in action this weekend. Read on...
