Book Banning Rears its Head in Huntington Beach

Aren't we all past this stuff? The Register's Annie Burris reports that last night's Huntington Beach city council meeting saw a former Westminster school district trustee reading aloud a graphic child-rape scene from Maya Angelou's autobiographical I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.

Judy Ahrens
performed the reading and was joined in her effort by Ocean View School District Trustee John Briscoe. The point was to gross-out everyone to the point where the book could be banned from school libraries.

The really censorious thing is that they seem to be getting traction:

Briscoe and Ahrens did a similar reading of Angelou's book at an Oct. 13 Ocean View trustee meeting.

"Administration and other board members are unable or unwilling to take action to remove inappropriate material immediately," he said.

However, another Ocean View trustee Debbie Cotton told the Register that all five board members were shocked that the book was in the library after the reading. During the same meeting, the board directed Superintendent Alan Rasmussen to look into the matter.

"Clearly, this is just appalling," said Cotton of the book's contents. "I couldn't believe it when I was hearing it."

Cotton said the book can no longer be checked out from the library and is pending a committee's review. She said it takes one trustee or parent to request that the book be reviewed and that if Briscoe had not put in a request by the end of the week, she would do it.

Cotton added that library records show that the book had never been checked out. It is unclear how long the book was in the library, she said.

Yup, a book that's never been checked out from this library, a book that was nominated for a National Book Award and is considered a classic of African-American literature (or just American literature), has all of a sudden become threatening in Southern California, 2009.

In 2007, parents in rural Pennslyvania tried to ban the same book but failed. And it ranks number three on the American Library Association's list of the most frequently challenged books of 1990-2000. Phew. It looks like we're only one decade behind, here.

Robert McLin says:

I find the attitude of Ahern and Briscoe regarding this issue irresponsible and troubling. As I recall, the US Constitution protects our right to free speech and expression. Why would these people want to take the responsibility away from the parents to determine what is or isn't appropriate for their children?

It is my responsibility as a parent determine what my children should read or view. It is also my responsibility to discuss serious or controversial issues with my children to present a broad perspective so they can make good choices.

Please, leave the parenting to the parents!

Wait - is this the same City Council that allows, nay - encourages, 12 and 13 year-old girls in bikinis to be spray painted on by surf companies each year as part of the U.S. Open.

...all in keeping with being "Surf City" I suppose.

PS - doesn't hurt the city makes a tidy profit of it either.

Maya Angelou is one of the greatest American authors of recent times.
The book has won countless awards.
While any depiction of rape is disturbing, the rape of an 8 year old girl in this autobiography is part of the overall work.
Taking it out of context is outrageous.
Perhaps Mr. Briscoe and Ms. Ahrens should return to strong-arming school boards and city councils across OC into posting "In God We Trust" in their meeting spaces.
Yes, folks, they have an agenda.

Fahrenheit 451 all over again. Next, they will want to ban free thought..... It is pretty obvious these folk have tremendous amounts of free time to spend on book bans. Very sad, indeed. I hope they wake up some day and recognize what year it is and that parents can handle the book selection with their children.

I am a teacher in OVSD and it is sad to say, but this is not the first "crap" our lovely board members have tried to pull. It's amazing what happens when you give average people a little bit of power...they think they can tell others how to think.

Mr. Briscoe is a piece of work. He is the same board member that voted NO on supporting Teacher Appreciation Week b/c he didn't think it was worth celebrating.

Mr. Briscoe & Mrs. Cotton have obviously never read this book; otherwise they would know why it was nominated for the National Book Award.

I feel sorry for these simple minded people...and it's scary that they head a school district.

This is why 'local rule' is so over-rated. Local rule gave us segregation, and now in Huntington Beach it will give us book burning.

Das Ubergeek says:

They need to resolve the question of how long the book sat on the shelves. The scene in question may have contaminated nearby books, in which case they will have to squeeze a copy of Glenn Beck's "Arguing With Idiots" in to reverse the damage inflicted on the children.

Do kids still check out books from the school library any more? Sounds like a publicity stunt.
