Square fight! Soft-rockin'
Eagles founder
Don Henley has asked YouTube to yank down
Irvine State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore's "Boys of Summer" parody, which we
posted on Friday. Now if you try to watch the vid on YouTube, you get the inexplicably hilarious message:
This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Don Henley. Don't worry, though. If you need your fix of DeVore's campaign tech-dude screeching about
Barack Obama destroying America's hopes and dreams to the tune of a song cool enough for the Ataris to cover,
DeVore's got you covered with his own website. Or watch it below. Remember: DeVore is running to unseat
Barbara Boxer from the U.S. Senate.
UPDATE: Don Henley's lawyers have made us take it down! Details here.
DeVore took the time to
write up a response to Henley in which he takes the Eagle to task for having a "thin skin," and singing mean things about harmless ole'
Ronald Reagan. He then threatens to keep spinning Henley songs into anti-Democrat dirges. Oh Chuck DeVore, and that sense of humor you seem to think you have... I've yet to laugh with the guy instead of at him, but either way, 2010's gonna be hilarious.
Keep an eye on Navel Gazing for all the exciting updates!

Isn't it "copyright" not "copywrite?"

Yeah... looks like this news was so fast-breaking I didn't have time to reread the sentence I thought I'd copied from YouTube... Thanks.

Well, I'm the last person to talk on typos, but I thought the mistake was from DeVore's new media team and not the Weekly.
Parody is protected speech, but lifting the music without permission is the violation here. Doesn't Chuck's wife teach music at IUSD? Couldn't she have changed the tune ever so slightly?

I hadn't watched that video before now (just knowing of its existence was enough), but good Lord, that was horrible. Chuck and his minions are like that 'gifted' kid with the braces who was convinced that he'd win the election for student body president because he was smart and all of the teachers liked him.
My favorite part of Chuck's response was when he threatened to take his video over to "the Conservative Alternative to YouTube". That'll sure fix their wagon, Chuck!

Dan Chmielewski says:
I didn't realize YouTube was part of the liberal media. With Republicans and Conservatives accounting for less than 30 percent of the California registered voters, by all means cater to the far right Chuck.

Chuck DaDORK! The Republicans need to look a little deeper for a more savvy candidate and no its not that evil witch from the North Carly "I GOT FIRED AND MADE 20 MILLION ANYWAYS" Fiorina. Please someone actually cool and intellectually capable to compete with BHO come save those last of us common sense Republicans trying to survive in California.

DeVore thinks he stroke Gold with the Henley parody “thing”. What DeVore is not realizing is that by parodying Henley’s work, he is really doing a political disservice to himself. DeVore may temporarily gain from all this media attention. But -in the long run- he will loose credibility as a politician. However, he is on the right track, if he wants to establish himself as the next Rush Limbaugh and get his own radio show. Or, perhaps he can land a job with the “comedy circuit”? Running for office should not be a Saturday Night Live episode.
