Saddleback High School Covering Up Sex Crimes by Teacher's Aides?

tshirt_style2.jpgThis past Monday, a teacher's aide by the name of Alonso Manuel Gonzalez was arrested by SanTana police and released on bail. The Orange County Sheriff's website no longer lists why folks get thrown in the pokey, but the Orange County Superior Court website shows Gonzalez was arrested for a"lewd act with dependant adult by caretaker."

Sources tell the Weekly Gonzalez works at Saddleback High School in SanTana and that he works primarily with disabled students--and that school officials are trying to keep Gonzalez's arrest under wraps from parents and the media. "We were told in a meeting that none of us should talk about [the incident and arrest], to not discuss it with anyone," says a Saddleback teacher who requested anonymity.

The Weekly called Saddleback High's main number (714-513-2900) and asked if a school employee had been arrested. "No," whoever picked up the phone sternly responded. She quickly added that even if something like that had happened, she was not at liberty to discuss personnel matters. When the lady asked who had told me about the arrest, I responded that a student had alerted me to it. "You know how students blow up stories," she snorted.

But when I asked if an incident involving a teacher's assistant indecently exposing himself to a student had occurred, the woman acknowledged this, but quickly added "at this point, it's only an allegation." She confirmed that parents were not notified of the "allegation."

To recap Saddleback's story: no arrest has been made of a school employee, it's none of our business, kids exaggerate, a sex crime DID happen, but since it's just hearsay, parents don't need to know. Is the SanTana Unified School District now under the direct governance of the Diocese of Orange? Sick, just sick. Much, much more on this story next week...

SAUSD coverup continues says:

This is how SAUSD deals with perps. They tell staff to shut up and refuse to talk to anyone who needs to know information. I would guess that this is the work of Evelyn Carrigg who has sheltered and protected this guy for years. We all know that he is a menace to the students that he is supposed to be watching over. He's a predator with a long history of abusing the low-functioning students in his care.

Is it any suprise at all that the site's administrators would try and cover up his wrong doings? It is a pathetic attempt to avoid responsibility that has been negligent for YEARS.. Your children are not safe until these corrupt administrators are taken to task and ejected from the school district. Disgusting and repulsive behavior by those administrators who are in charge.

Carrigg is a dirty rat says:

Gustavo,
You are entering a hornet’s nest with this one. That guy was Esther Jones’ pet from Lathrop (his wife works there still). At Lathrop Alonso was the bilingual assistant for Evelyn Carrigg and she was tasked to keep an eye on him. Carrigg is now the VP at Saddleback and she knows fully well that he has a history of being inappropriate with students. He moved to Saddleback into a classroom with handicapped students because the pay is better and not because he had any particular expertise or interest in the kids. He was a very odd guy. Now that Jones had been terminated, Alonso no longer has her skirts to hide under. Carrigg would be the cover-up specialist at this point.

OrangeJuice blog says:

Gustavo,
I don't know if you or your readers are aware of this long-running column of problems at the SAUSD. It is posted at the OrangeJuice blog and it has been active since 2006. there are several links at the top of the page which divide things up by year.

http://orangejuiceblog.com/2008/06/new-sausd-corruption-open-thread/

There is no way that this news can come as a suprise to people who should have been paying attention.

Former teacher says:

There was a teacher who tried hard to get him removed from the classroom a few years back. They have had a lot of teachers in that classroom. It’s like it is haunted or something. I feel sorry for the kids. If it’s the guy I am thinking about, he was really really weird and creepy.

big surprise says:

I remember when the Weekly used to cover SanTana Unified with a comb--now, it seems the white folks down in Capistrano deserve more attention. Shame on you, Weekly.

Keeping things hushed up? What about duty as mandated reporters? Those administrators have a duty of care that they are not functioning under. What in the world is wrong with them? Thank you for this story, Gus. I’m a parent and I’d be absolutely furious if my child was in that school right now!

anon says:

Another assistant caught him in the act and went directly to the school police. That, alone, should tell you how bad the problem had gotten. Everyone knew that Esther and Evelyn would punish anyone who complained about their precious Alonso! That assistant was smart to bypass the SHS administrators and get the police involved. I feel sorry for the retaliation that is sure to come because of being heroic for the kids.

LatINOC says:

Saddleback has a long history of ineffective leadership. When I was a student there the adminstration did little to encourage the success of student achievements. Instead students were told to shut up and put up (ie, Jones' daily Words of Wisdom). The students with a brain were frustrated that the administration cared more about their reputations than the welfare of students. When Esther Jones made INTERNATIONAL headlines about trying to pass failing students to fulfill NCLB requirements clearly demonstrates what the administration would illegally do to cover their asses. Saddleback has lost all its integrity since they lost Dr. Laxton and Mrs. Maher...they were the best VP and Principal when I was a student there. The school has not seen the sun since.

not suprised says:

I would be surprised if this guy is NOT Catholic. He is not a Diocese of Orange employee but somehow, I spell something with political influence that usually leads to Catholicism in the OC!

Gustavo Arellano says:

Sal: I'm not sure about the exact nature of the crime, having yet to read the police report. However, my sources say it's a bit more serious than what you wrote--as if that's not disgusting enough.

Joelle Casteix says:

The unabashed corruption - at all levels of the local Santa Ana government and school district - makes me sick.

The north-end whiteys are quick to blame the crumbling infrastructure on the "illegals," but the last time I checked, undocumented immigrants certainly weren't the people skimming funds while school kids had no grass, covering up for sex abuse in the schools, and letting the streets turn to ruin.

The players are different, but the motive is the same: money. Keep victims and parents in the dark, while we steal your cash and turn your children into sacrificial lambs.

shs says:

I just graduated from that school. My freshman year I reported this guy to the head teacher of the special education program. This guy would shove food in the student’s mouth during lunch like if he was disgusted by it. I told the other assistants about it and even the teacher but I guess that wasn’t enough to fire him. I always wondered why he was still doing that job if he didn’t like it but now I see why. I just hope it wasn’t to the girl I grew close too.
