About that balloon: The Register has an update on the Great Park balloon story for y'all. Ready? OK: People are actually riding it. Yep, that's the update. Later! (More balloon photos from the Weekly's trip here.)
- While the web editor's away: Kevin Roderick of LA Observed took a much-needed vacation, but the folks running the site in his absence missed the OC Reg departing publisher story. Roderick would have been all over that one. So they didn't break the news, no big, but it's quite strange that it wasn't even mentioned in today's morning news roundup.
- LATimes.com's mini-face lift: I don't know if anyone else noticed, but a simple font and color change on articles at the Times' website makes them much easier to read. They look almost...blog-like. I'm guessing this is part of the "Botox treatment" web executive editor Meredith Artley talked about when she started months ago.
- Man meat extravaganza part II: Remember how I said to grab your binoculars and head to Newport Beach to see some lifeguard action yesterday? The Register must've been listening. They even took video. How thoughtful.
- Free Tix Fridays: Every Friday, we'll be giving away tickets to local shows at our music blog, Heard Mentality. Tomorrow's giveaway: 15 pairs of tix to see glam metal parody band Metal Skool on August 31st in Long Beach. Check out HM before noon to win.

Would be interesting to see an alleged Orange County news blog actually cover the Register story instead of complaining that an LA blog isn't covering it. If only Anderson had resigned at ComiCon!

And again today:

Read before you rant. Thanks.

I read the pieces here yesterday and today, and all they contained were links elsewhere. Foolish me to hope the Weekly might do some original reporting, but clearly you are too busy pissing on your readers to provide an alternative to the mainstream news. According to your response, though, the Weekly's "coverage" will consist of pointing us to sources in the MSM. Thank you for clarifying.
Sorry for the previous "rant." My bad to expect something good from you.

Patience, gentle grendl: being first isn't always good. Trust that your favorite rag is working on a biggie re: the Reg.

Actually, the Register story that I worked on about the balloon did not just mention that people are riding the balloon.
The beginning does mention the almost 12,000 riders.
The Great Park Balloon launched 40 days ago, drawing thousands of riders for a birds-eye view of the former El Toro Marine base.
BUT we also mention that:
But the project hasn’t been glitch-free: the 15-acre site is $1 million above the original budget and construction may continue through mid-September. The current attraction’s 15-acre-lot is just over one percent of the future park’s 1,347 acres.
