Rohrabacher, the Reg & the Accused Boy Molester

>The Orange County Register, the place where local Republican politicians see their press releases in print, reported on Friday that Congressman Dana Rohrabacher is steaming again.

Not Drunk

This time Rohrabacher is upset that he's been linked to an accused serial child molester: Jeffrey Nielsen.

The Congressman lied in the "newspaper" article, not once but twice:

Fairy Tale #1: Rohrabacher said Nielsen worked for him for a few months after Nielsen graduated from college.

Reality: Rohrabacher handpicked Nielsen to relocate from Orange County to Virginia and serve as his congressional aide in D.C. While working for Rohrabacher for more than half a year, Nielsen allegedly spent his spare time molesting a 7th-grade boy.

Fairy Tale #2: Rohrabacher said he had no idea what Nielsen did in his personal life.

Reality: Rohrabacher vouched for Nielsen's character in a personal letter of recommendation he wrote to get his hand-picked pal into USC's law school.

Oddly, both of these facts were missing from the Reg story. However, they are contained in previous articles I've written about the Nielsen case, a case which the DA's office--a place where Nielsen once worked--has allowed to stall for 42 months without a trial. Much to Mr. Rohrabacher's chagrin, once again the company he keeps has brought about an indictment of him in the court of public opionion. During his 2004 campaign, while giving an interview with KFI's Ken and John, the question came up: are you a homosexual? Oddly, Mr. Rohrabacher's answer was nothing more than a laugh -- no "yes", no "no." Evidently, Ken and John heard the same buzz that everyone else in the 46th District has heard for years, and they wanted a direct admission or denial. They didn't get one. The triplets his wife bore him, conceived by artificial insemination, haven't really proven him to be a straight man any more than the wives of countless other recently outed gay or bisexual Republican leaders have proven their men to be straight. Perhaps the Village Voice can give us the answer to Ken and John's question that the congressman was remise to give. In August of 2001, the magazine quoted personal trainer Bryant Stiney: "You never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever see a straight guy in the gay scene who hasn't done something. Never!" Funny thing is, in this Republican district, I don't think anyone really cares about Dana Rohrabacher's gay friendships anymore than they care about how much money he took from Jack Abramoff. I, for one, don't care if he's gay or not. What I do care about is if he's honest or NOT.

  2. Alex B-Z says:

Well, if he IS gay, then he can't be very honest. I mean, for one, he's got a female wife. For another, he voted for the Defense of Marriage Act. While that might not be an entirely dishonest act, it certainly smacks of a serious integrity problem.

    (note I said "if")

  3. Debby Bodkin says:

There are many more issues to be concerned with than whether or not Rohrbacher is gay or not, who really cares?

It is the Abramoff, the former DHS film investment fiasco, the innocent investors who lost their life savings, the DHS security sites that were revealed without a thought about the protections of the public. When you combine all of these with Rohrbacher's sudden denial of any association or friendship with Jeffrey Nielsen, something smells dirty rotten!

How long can the politically-connected escape accountability in the OC? Where is Scott Baugh and Michael Schroeder when fellow Republicans, Rohrbacher and Nielsen, are in need of GOP support? Is it all about easy come - easy go?

[...] Moxley invites Rohrabacher and readers to pore through his coverage and point out where that has been written. Here's a hint: it rhymes with "nowhere."   [...]
