Borderline Blogosphere Zaniness

A story that appeared in the OC Weekly a few weeks ago called "On the Borderline" has caused quite a stir in the past week in the blogosphere, resulting in several local blog contributors calling for the removal of Santa Ana Library Board member Lupe Moreno.

According to the bloggers, who cited my article as a source, Moreno referred to illegal aliens as—gasp!—"subhuman, pod people." How could Moreno make such a ghastly comment, you ask? Well, she didn't. I did.

Let's scrutinize the passage from the article:

The immigrants are actually subhuman, pod people, explains Lupe (which everyone pronounces “loopy”) Moreno. They are not “undocumented workers” looking for a better life, but rather an “alien invasion” who “don’t want to become Americans; they want to replace Americans!”

The words subhuman and pod people are not in quotation marks within the passage. That's because Moreno never said them. She referred to "aliens" who want to "replace Americans."

I took it upon myself to reference "pod people," villains from the classic sci-fi films Invasion of the Body Snatchers and the book they were based on.

The Wikipedia says the plot of the tale involves "Earth being invaded by seeds which have drifted to Earth from space. The seeds take over human bodies and replace them with simulations grown from plantlike pods, perfect physical duplicates who kill and dispose of their human victims."

So Moreno never actually said "pod people"; she just sort of implied it.

    Derek,

Well, we may not have gotten the quotes right but I for one appreciated your story about Moreno. And it did inspire us to call on the Mayor of Santa Ana, Miguel Pulido, who is ironically a Mexican immigrant, to dump his appointee, Moreno, from the Library Board. I am told that he has dug in his heels, so this issue will continue to haunt him...

Sounds like a conspiricy out of the "little shop of horrors" or "sweetie todd" (musicals) could Apple be conspiring to sell us ipods to convert us into flesh eating plant drone zombies? Maybe the drug companies got involved somewhere along the way. Oh my GOD isn't the President's wife a librarian? ooo this is getting so complicated.

God, I hate to have to defend Lupe Moreno, of all people, but even if you didn't put quotes around "subhuman" and "pod people," you did in fact write, "The immigrants are actually subhuman, pod people, explains Lupe."
That makes it her saying it.
Also, "alien" has more than one meaning.

    Jesus.

I hope Kissell's made you write a sincere apology before she sues your ass. The Weekly's never lost a lawsuit . . . yet.

It's a joke, Rebecca. Take it!

  5. Rebecca says:

Stavo, how is it a joke? You're going to have to splain me.

Derek Responds: "Aliens" want to "replace Americans," kind of like pod people in The Body Snatchers....Get it, jab jab... Har Har Har!

  6. Steve says:

My God, who took this photo? The red jacket complements her color perfectly. Har Har Har!

Just discovered a complete list of all marked down products at Amazon, sorted by category
and % off, ranging from 50% off to 90% off (thanks Sonja for the effort).

Actually I never thought Amazon would have articles with 90% off, but only in the category
Electronics there are more than 3000 of them - look for yourself, the list is on
    http://bargains-hunter.blogspot.com/2008/02/looking-for-marked-down-prices.html
    or on http://digg.com/gadgets/Actually_I_never_thought_Amazon_would_have_articles_with_90
(which is a blog of a woman who specializes in finding good deals at Amazon, like Britain’s "Jeanie").
