Loretta Sanchez Will Defend a Kid in Vietnam But Refuses to Support Kids Here?

What was Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez thinking today when she took to the floor in Congress to fight for the rights of a youth activist in Vietnam while she continues to ignore the youth activists pleading for her support in her own backyard? It's not that Nguyen Tien Trung, a well known youth and pro-democracy activist in Vietnam, shouldn't be released from prison, what nags here is yet another instance of Sanchez's blatant hypocrisy.

"The recent arrest of lawyer Le Cong Dinh and Nguyen Tien Trung further demonstrates Vietnam's continuing disregard for basic civil, political and religious liberties," she told members of Congress.

Um, Loretta, hello? Did you forget that kids in your own district -- young, pro-democracy student activists -- have pleaded with you for your support in their fight for basic civil liberties? Have you forgotten the faces of young, pro-democracy activists who sat down with you and told stories of being brought here at ages so young, they don't remember anymore; of how they grew up speaking English, going to school, and eventually to college, but have been denied the rights other students have because of their immigration status?

Here's how she described Trung: "Mr. Trung is the leader of the Movement Democratic Youth, a group that mobilizes young people to demand change in the political regime in Vietnam."

She must have forgotten about the leaders of the DREAM Team, a group of bright, articulate, undocumented college students in OC who met with her a couple of months ago precisely to ask her to help them make changes in our political system. The students asked her to co-sponsor the bipartisan DREAM Act, a bill that would allow longtime illegal immigrant students (many here through no fault of their own, since they were brought as young kids) who go to college to be able to earn permanent legal residency, receive financial aid and be able to look for jobs legally after graduation, like other students. Loretta has refused to co-sponsor the bipartisan bill, and has said, as an almost backhanded afterthought, that she would support it later if it made it to the House for a vote.

Loretta, honey, how can you passionately chastise a "disregard for basic, civil, political and religious liberties," in Vietnam when these students in your own district, who have supported you for years, (not to mention the former illegal Latinos who voted for you after the 1986 amnesty), are being denied basic civil liberties and treated like law-breaking scoundrels despite their status as good, law-abiding college students?

How about you whip up one of your impassioned pleas on behalf of the pro-democracy youth activists in your own district tomorrow? That's something your constituents would certainly be interested in reading.

What part about ILLEGAL do you not understand?

The part that sees American institutions and taxpayers freely take their money and tuition yet demonizes them. Dipshit.

Excellent points, Gustavo! Go back to your rock under the OCRegister, Bruno. Just because it's "illegal," it isn't wrong, as these kids had no choice in the matter. Eugenics was once legal in the United States, so does that mean it was right due to being justified by the law?

Gustavo, where can I possibly procure the physical sign in the picture?

Daffodil says:

Hey Mike,
Daffodil here. I agree with Gustavo, that's why I couldn't help myself today when I heard about Loretta's little speech! Regarding the sign: it's the logo used by the great students who make up the Orange County Dream Team. If you contact them, I'm sure they'd be happy to share a sign or, better yet, support them and get a t-shirt!

Art Pedroza says:

Loretta is not the only local Democrat pandering to the Viet vote. Lame Assemblyman Jose Solorio asked Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido to close down an art exhibit this year because it offended the Trannies. And the lame Santa Ana City Council, which is all Democrat save for Carlos Bustamante, voted to recognize the defunct flag of conquered South Vietnam.

For Loretta to reject the Dream Act should be the last straw people! Don't support her. Let her twist in the wind next year against, ironically, Van Tran (or better yet, Quang Pham)/

Rey Lopez-Calderon says:

Politicians love to back up non-controversial resolutions, especially if they pander to a chunk of their constituency. Why is anyone surprised?

A hypocrite? You are to nice! Her refusal to co-sponsor the Dream Act is more than hypocrisy--it shows her to be both cowardly and mean.

Illegal entry is a crime, not a civil offense. It fascinating to see the vitriol and ad hominem directed towards what the majority of Americans are opposed to: for every illegal alien occupying a spot in higher education, an American citizen is denied an education.

And Gustavo, considering the ADL characterized your student group at Chapman a "hate group" while you were attending, I find your commentary lacking in morality. You're a racist of the worst sort and a fringe character.

These people are NOT constituents. They cannot vote. They are free to return to Mexico to get an education. No one invited them here in the first place. The irresponsibility of their parents is not the fault of the taxpayer.

I have a dream too: DEPORTATION of CRIMINAL INVADERS.

Gustavo Arellano says:

While I won't dispute your characterization of me as a fringe character, Petit, your description of Chapman's MEChA chapter is a flat-out lie. The ADL has never classified MEChA de Chapman as a hate group, and even if they did classify MEChA as a whole as a hate group (which they didn't), wonder why then-dean Joe Kertes—who knows something about hate, given he was born in a concentration camp—was one of our biggest champions.

Interestingly enough, ADL DOES think Barbara Coe and most of your Know Nothing amigos are racist and anti-immigrant--funny how you don't cite that!

petit bourgeois says:

Barbara Coe does good work, and it speaks for itself (see Prop. 187 for an example which speaks for the majority of voting Californians).

While your chapter has not been cited specifically by the ADL, for you to claim that antisemitism (and anti-angloism) is not prevalent in MECha chapters nationwide is completely disingenuous.

"Por la raza todo--fuera la raza, nada" pretty much speaks for itself. There is no way you are going to disavow the founding documents (El Plan Spritual de Aztlan, amongst others). You belonged to a racial supremacist outfit, and there is no way you are getting out of it. What other races did you student group benefit? Whites? Blacks? Vietnamese? I think not.

The ADL has about as much credibility as the $PLC in any event, but incidents like this will not be forgotten: http://www.adl.org/98audit/campus.asp

For you to cite some educrat in your defense is equally ridiculous. Those people are the real know-nothings.

But keep writing hateful commentary about old white people. People are not so stupid to believe that you anything but an advocate for your criminal countrymen invading my country, and a racist to the very core of your being. Fringe character indeed.

Education is a state issue, so the fed's need to but out.

The "DReam Act" sounds good on the face, but AB540 has already solved the problem of local educated kids getting the in state education. Right?

Posted On: Thursday, Jul. 9 2009 @ 3:56PM
Gustavo Arellano says:

You specifically said Chapman MEChA was characterized by the ADL as a hate group—your words, not mine. And now you're bashing the ADL after first using them as a source to go after me? What a fool. By the way, REAL classy calling a Holocaust survivor a know-nothing, but what does one expect of someone who says Coe does good work?

Posted On: Thursday, Jul. 9 2009 @ 5:22PM
petit bourgeois says:

You do not deny you were in a racial supremacist outfit. Too funny when the racism of MECha is so overt against whites.

Prop 187 was written by a coalition, including at least one Berkeley professor, and Ms. Coe. You have an inherent racial animus towards old white people, and it is well-documented.

187 passed by a very wide margin, thanks to people like Barbara Coe writing it properly. But hey, let's celebrate the defeat of the will of the voters in the spirit of Stalin. If you read public opinion polls, you are out there Gustavo, the outer fringes of public discourse on the topic of the dream act.

You spent your entire writing career defending the inherent antisemitism and antiangloism of your organization (la raza cosmica) by attacking the Voz dummies, when you ignore 100 million people back home who hold the same racial sentiment towards jews and anglos as Mr. Cienfuegos. MECha, and your membership, is nothing more than an extension of your bigotry. "Por La Raza Todo--Fuera La Raza Nada" (italicized in the original document).

You cannot deny the founding documents. You read them and signed up. People like me are "brutal gringo invaders" when the opposite is true. Dodge the issue of you racism all you want. It is not going away as long as I am around.

Gustavo Arellano says:

Yawn...sorry, but when it comes to hate groups and bigotry, I'm more inclined to believe the ADL or Southern Poverty Law Center than someone who denigrates a Holocaust survivor as a Know Nothing. But I did respond to your claims in my Barbara Coe-hates-ethnic-restaurant post a while back, and you said nothing!

CHS says:

An illegal (or undocumented, if you like) immigrant has the perfect right to attend Cal State Fullerton or any number of public colleges in California. However, they are not eligible for financial aid and, more importantly, they are not eligible to work in this country with or without a college degree. Frankly, something needs to be done to grant citizenship (or some other legal status) to kids who technically are "illegals" but know no country but the USA.
