Got a MySpace message from Sancho the Latin Blogger regarding a community meeting this past Tuesday in Fullerton regarding the city's endangered Chicano murals on Lemon Street south of Valencia (I would've gone but made the mistake of trying to leave San Bernardino at 5pm--HELL). Not only are the murals not coming down, but Fullerton is receiving a $10,000 grant to restore the murals and the city will actively collaborate with the Maple Street barrio to get the treasures looking their best again. Congrats, Fullerton, for doing the right thing--and for Sancho for spearheading the effort to save the murals.
Also of note: councilmember Shawn Nelson, the idiot who first suggested painting them over, was a no-show. We call him an idiot anew because he also reneged on his promise to meet with Sancho and ask the Mexican a YouTube pregunta. Silly Shawn: where are you???

I am glad actually elated that this has happend. Granted I live far west of Fullerton, I am glad to diversity preserved. I imagine Shawn was probably at over at some great meeting will Millard and Dillow plotting their next irellevant scheme to try and exploit the idea that by virtue they belong and they somehow have a plausible answer to a irrelavant question.

I think the main reason why Nelson didn't meet with me because he was to cheap to buy me a 3 dollar burrito and a 2 dollar horchata. I mean I wouldn't be able to think of anything else. I just wanted to say thanks Gustavo for everything on our journey to save the murals. You were a big help I can tell you that much, which I am sure of.

Sancho

Sometimes I question myself and think I may be too hard on Councilmen Nelson, but in the end I am always exonerated by his next dumb ass move. I can't believe that even after all this he was a no-show on Tueday. With the help of the Police and Fire unions, as well as the out of town developer money that fund his campaign, he must feel comfortable enough to write off an entire community during an election year.
Congratulations on winning the battle of the murals. The next battle is to bring out the vote in these communities Shawn obviously does not care about and support Sharon Quirk who is running against him this November.

Sancho, here is a video of Shawn Nelson's campaign kick off party a few weeks ago at the Slide Bar. If you want to skip all the bullshit his last line is "have a drink on me". So he apparently is not too cheap to buy a round for an entire bar filled with those he wants to represent. Apparently buying you a burrito and horchata just did not factor in to his path to glory. : )

Baxter, I just finished watching this video. Great stuff, good speech, and thanks to slidebar, perfect lighting. Now I am not here to Shawn Bash, but I will say this, there are something that you can pick and pull and get him with. But I am not here to Shawn Bash. After all, homeboy did say his "sorry". I think the next step for all this is THE POLLS. To bad I wasn't there, I would have just settled for a drink then the burrito.

I think what this brought up was a place for some of us to talk about the racial divisions we see in a city that has been far too self absorbed with hair salons, bars, and restaurants for a very long time. I hope that the community will rally round, and that their voice --which hasn't been silent but has more been misconstrued or ignored, will find its rightful place at the table.
I can't tell you how grateful I am to Sancho for stepping up. I wish I could've been there, but you already know why I wasn't. Can't wait to lend a hand!

Do taggers avoid these murals because they appreciate art that is worthy of merit, or because they have a soft spot for Chevys and sombrero-wearing Latinas? Both?
As Orange County's leading conservative commentator, Pete Fundy believes that Hoa Van Tran should answer these and other troubling questions so often ignored by the MSM. But, that's just me. I'm Pete Fundy.

I, too wondered at the sincerity of Mr. Nelson's apology to our community. I so wanted to believe he meant it but alas with a doubt from within, (along with my husband's observant wisdom), I knew that it just could not be genuine, without an ulterior motive. Hence, his hidden agenda peers over the fence.
Apparently, after we exited that very specific council meeting, where he "sincerely" apologized, under abated breath, he denied further OCDGB funding for the Maple/Lemon Park renovation project(s). This, is what I have heard, not yet confirmed.
To this, I agree, we must work towards ousting this cleverly suited wanna-be tyrant in desguise, (goodness, a democratic representative or a pro-communistic declarant?) We can rid our council of this kind of malignant attitude. We have the "poder". We are "people of interest" and we are a force to contend with. We must get in the voting booths and declare that we will not tolerate behaviour of this kind. Let us get registered, those that are able to vote, please consider doing so. This is a matter of life, as we regard it, in reference to what is, has been, and will continue to be, our community.
If I sound idealistic, I am. I was one of those that was forceably removed from Maple School in the 70's, bussed out from our community escuela, an hours ride, one-way to another school. The reasoning behind this was to "integrate"? Why then was there not a one, "bussed in" to our school? Our school was taken away, our senior center was relocated and now our murals are being targeted? What next? Another "Soco" on Valencia? Let us not allow them to take us back to a time, when our kinfolk were not allowed to speak Spanish at Fullerton High. Things that make you go "hmmmmm"...
Thank you for the opportunity to voice. Thank you Sr. Sancho and many of our neighbors that stood up and spoke up on our behalf. Hard work, well done. Muchisimas Gracias. Like mi abuela used to say, to all those that departed from her sight, "Que Dios te Bendiga".
Godspeed.

Shawn Nelson said on the SlideBar Video
I will always represent what I consider to be the average person in this town...
I have a friend, a retired school teacher who says, "Average has quickly slid to mediocre," and so it is that Nelson's accusations about the murals were an attempt to appeal and pander to that portion of our community who wants to be believe in hackneyed stereotypes about humanity.
In reviewing the video, it seems to me that his ideal "average" (to him) person is a business owner. In this video he was derisive of the two school district employees who serve on the council ("two get off at 3 pm") as well as those who are retired.
He seems to think of himself as the lone crusader, the only business owner on a council of four other misfits. In other words, Shawn is all alone by himself up there. Poor baby. Must be lonely. Boo hoo.
So he wants more business people. But this is nothing but the same stereotype --that all business owners run their businesses the very same way. They don't. Some are better than others, some are SOB's, some treat their employees like slaves, some are total saints, some are honest and some cheat on their books. So frankly, I want the mix on my city council because that's what composes our community. He'd find that out if he ever left the confines of his SunnyHills home and community. But no, and frankly, there's nothing you can do to convince me he even cares.
