Hate Fighters Fight Each Other: CAIR vs. Brian Levin

Malik Ali, at UCI earlier this year...

It was quite the heated, unexpected exchange today on KPFK-FM 90.7's Uprising morning programming (produced by Weekly contributor and Anaheim boy Gabriel San Roman) between two seeming allies. In one corner: Brian Levin, recent Best of OC profile subject and head of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino. In the other corner: Munira Syeda, communications manager for the Los Angeles chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The two were on to ostensibly talk about the partnership between CAIR and Jewish groups to protest some neo-Nazi Inland Empire morons who are targeting Mexicans and Jews.

That's not what happened. Instead, Levin mentioned he found it incredulous that CAIR would, on one hand help fight anti-Semites, yet on the other hand maintain a relationship with anti-Semites and refuse to condemn them. Specifically, he mentioned frequent UC Irvine yapper (at the invite of the campus' Muslim Student Union) Amir Abdel Malik Ali and William Baker. Both are certifiable Jew-haters: Malik Ali claims the recent Shepard hate crimes bill is a Jewish conspiracy to target Muslims, while Baker--who fronts as a Christian man who tries to build bridges of cultural tolerance with others regarding the Muslim faith--was exposed by the Weekly in 2002 as a raving fool.

Syeda brushed off Levin's claims, insisted CAIR condemns anti-Semites, and said she didn't "appreciate" the professor "smearing CAIR's name the way he did." But the fact is, Levin was speaking the truth.

The Weekly couldn't find a connection between Baker and CAIR any later than 2004, when we exposed the connection between the two. At the time, contributor Stan Brin asked longtime Southern California CAIR chapter executive director Hussam Ayloush why CAIR kept inviting Baker to its events. "His focus is that we all hold stereotypes--and that we shouldn't feel threatened by knowledge or interaction," Ayloush told us at the time. "As a Muslim, I have been accused of so many things that I would be very hesitant and careful before condemning anyone"--this, despite the Weekly tying Baker to Holocaust deniers and the Rev. Robert Schuller firing him as the Crystal Cathedral's main Muslim man.

Malik Ali, meanwhile, spoke at a CAIR-sponsored event as recently as 2007 despite his long-known notoriety. There is no record of CAIR condemning Malik Ali or Baker since.

At the end of the Uprising interview, with the actual reason both were invited to opine on long-forgotten, Syeda spat out that "the gentleman with the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism is actually involved in hate himself." Problem is, Levin never actually condemned CAIR as a group per se--just pointed out their reticence to part ways with Baker and Malik Ali in the past. And he spouted off enough Islam love letters and barbs against certifiable Muslim bashers like Dennis Prager to show the audience that the only hate in his heart was against bigoted idiots and their partners. Does CAIR still fall in that category? We hope not.

I reviewed some of the comments by Amir Abdel Malik Ali available on youtube, and while certainly a lot of people would find his views objectionable, there wasn't anything anti-semitic (anti-Jew) in them. Anti-Israel yes, to put it mildly, but not anti-semitic. I have to conclude that yes, indeed, Brian Levin was stirring up hate.

That's an interesting conclusion you reach. Falsely saying the Hate Crime Act is a Jewish plot to censor criticism of
Jews sounds like anti-Semitism to me

Sally says:

As a Riverside interfaith activist, I am on CAIR's email list and have attended several of its events.

Many of their speakers are actually human righs activists, rabbis, pastors, and Imams who clearly condemn extremism, bigotry, anti-semitism, islamophobia, and government abuses.

CAIR was one of the first religious groups in the Inland Empire to publicly stand by the Riverside synogogue in the area (mentioned in the story) as it was targeted by the nazis. The rabbi of that temple actually praised CAIR and its leadership in the Islamic community, at a recent city hall meeting discussing the nazi threats.

What is obvious to me is that Brian Levin is so obsessed with his political support for Israel (ruled by right-wing fanatics) that he feels the need to defame and attack any group that ever criticizes Israel. Brian Levin hides behind his "Study of Hate" to cover his own extremist views.

Gustavo Arellano says:

Sally: So, do you support associating with bona fide anti-Semites?

Brian Levin says:

I guess if you can't answer the question, just attack the questioner and his "extremist views".
(O My: http://criminaljustice.csusb.edu/facultyStaff/levin.htm )

Let's keep our eye on the ball here folks. The key issue here is why doesn't CAIR unambiguously denounce a neo-Nazi who frequently spoke at their events even after it was established he was a bigot who held a high-profile position in the Willis Carto empire (yes, the same one the Holocaust museum shooter worked for). Why don't they denounce another speaker of theirs who make wild anti-Semitic claims about Jews and 9/11 and the Hate Crime Act being a Jewish plot. There are more, but let's stick with this.

See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh0LNwH9LoM

I have not mentioned any other country as part of this discussion, except in as much as to clear up your spurious accusations, but I am glad you can make "obvious" accusations that you do not back up. I guess this establishes my "extreme" bona fides:

http://www.pe.com/localnews/opinion/localviews/stories/PE_OpEd_Opinion_S_op_24_ibish_levin_loc.405f806.html

I wonder who you really work for Sally because you echo exactly the same spurious taunts that were screamed at me unprovoked by CAIR folks at the NSM rally. You might as well lump President Obama in with me, because my position on peace is lockstep with his--nice try though,
you get an A- for smear, but hopefully for you no one will actually check the validity of your unsupported "obvious" charges.

Here's what Hussein Ibish of the American Task Force on Palestine (who I happen to be meeting with in DC at the moment) actually said about our efforts at peace.

"Historically, there has been little scope for common ground between American friends of Israel and American friends of the Palestinians. However, with a growing consensus nationally and internationally about the urgent need to end the occupation and create a Palestinian state to live alongside Israel in peace and security, unprecedented opportunities for cooperation are beginning to emerge. The development of a common purpose in favor of peace requires goodwill and outreach on both sides.

Rhetoric that clings to an outmoded "zero-sum" analysis that pits Israeli and Palestinian interests as irreconcilable and diametrically opposed, even though the future of both peoples depends on peace, is bad enough. Speakers who engage in demagoguery and spread anti-Semitic and violent ideals poison the national interests of the Palestinian people and their supporters in the United States. With "friends" such as Amir Abdel Malik Ali, the Palestinians need no additional enemies."
