In our recent obsession over Purpose-Driven Rick and Mariners Church's gay-employee-firing controversy, we at the
Weekly have been derelict in reporting on the other people that make Orange County Christianity so damn fascinating--and, by other people, I mean Calvary Chapel founder and pastor Chuck Smith. So we apologize for not bringing to your attention this
article from earlier this month in which the homo-hating teddy bear of a man argues all signs portend to his Savior returning.
"I believe that the Lord has put out a lot of signals that He's
coming very soon and I think it's important that we be aware of these
signals," Smith told a Christian news service. "Jesus rebuked the Pharisees because they could tell what the weather
was going to be like by looking at the skies but He said, 'You didn't
know the times of my coming.' I think that the signs are out and if we
are alert at all we can surely see that things are winding up."
The reporter asked Smith to bring a message to Americans "at this time of crisis," and he responded thusly: "I think that God allows these
things. The Lord said that 'when my judgments are in the land, it will
cause my people to turn to me.' So I believe that we are seeing the
judgment of God in our land and I'm praying that the people will turn
to the Lord."
Sorry if I'm not holding my breath. Chuck has been predicting the End Times since he was saving hippies off Corona del Mar State Beach in the 1960s.
OC Dem says:
Isn't there a passage in the Good Book that states something like "even the angels in heaven are unaware?"
Yet this guy knows?
He needs a one way ticket to Switzerland to pick a souvenir. One that goes off every hour.
Cuck-koo.....cuck-koo.

Rob says:
The Good Book passage to which you refer says that no one knows the "day or the hour" of Christ's return (Matthew 24:36). In the same chapter, Jesus says to watch for "signs" that He's coming back (Matthew 24:3-14). None of the pastor's quotes seem to violate what the Good Book teaches.

Linda says:
No one knows the day or the hour, and Pastor Chuck doesn't claim to know the day or the hour. We are living in very exciting times, and we are definitely living in the "Time of the Signs". Jesus is returning soon, and I cannot wait.

Has anyone seen Jesus around? - I need to hire a janitor says:
And in Revelations "we will soak our robes in thier blood.
OC bible belt has brought intolerance, dark closets, disappearences and continuous turmoil to many citizens who are not seeking the end times.
These wackos are promoting conquest and alienation of others rather than help continue the rather humble teaching of the new testament to love one another and seek tolorance, compassion and humility in times of difficulty.
Not to mention that a little good humor and good hearted intentions can stop the lunicy of those who seek the end times.
bellow is an example of a nut case who said that the end times were near. - lets hope these kinds of people learn to stop harming the general population with intolerence, greed and self promotion.
with the current state of debacle to our financial system and wacko preachers promoting end times the OC is getting crazier by the day.
Jonestown was the informal name for the "Peoples Temple Agricultural Project", an intentional community in northwestern Guyana formed by the Peoples Temple, a group from California, United States led by Jim Jones.
It became internationally notorious in November of 1978, when 918 people died in the settlement as well as in a nearby airstrip and in Georgetown, Guyana's capital. The name of the settlement became synonymous for the incidents at those locations.
On November 18, 1978, 909 Temple members died in Jonestown, all but two from apparent cyanide poisoning in an event termed "revolutionary suicide" by Jones and some members on an audio tape of the event and in prior discussions. To the extent the actions in Jonestown were viewed as a mass suicide, it is the largest such event in modern history. The incident at Jonestown was the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until the events of September 11, 2001.
The poisonings in Jonestown followed the murder of five others by Temple members at a nearby Port Kaituma airstrip. The victims included Congressman Leo Ryan, the first and only Congressman murdered in the line of duty in the history of the United States.

Chris says:
See how Satan works:
He has a guy equating Calvary Chapel with the Jonestown tragedy.
Unbelievable gall.
Instead of berating his own: Madoff/Lehman/Goldman Sachs, et al, he instead cowardly attacks Christians.
I'll God avenge us.

Chuck Smith has said things before like we would not see 1980, etc. HE likes to preach we are in the end times because it's a way to control people and "keep them in line".

Mike Leonard says:
It is interesting to me how many foolish individuals there are out in this world, men and women alike who have nothing better to do than to complain about others. I will agree with you that Pastor Warren is heading in the wrong direction concerning embracing Islam as "the religion of peace" using Rodney King Theology "can't we all just get along?" On the other hand, Chuck Smith has been warning the people of this nation about where we are heading. He has shown again and again from the Bible that God will judge those who have broken His commandments. And what are you doing? You, who haven't the slightest inkling of the danger you are in are merely regurgitating the same tired old mindset that was predicted in the Bible 2000 years ago when Peter declared that men would say just such drivel. In 2Pe 3:4 he said of people like you that, "they’ll mock, saying "So what’s happened to the promise of his Coming? Our ancestors are dead and buried, and everything’s going on just as it has from the first day of creation. Nothing’s changed."
Let me tell you that God's judgment is coming. If you can't see the trouble our nation is in then you are blind. And if you can't see the correlation between the trouble this nation is in and our governments embracing of the godless system of communism and enacting laws to protect homosexuals and pedophiles then you are just plain stupid, or as the Bible would describe you, you are like a brute beast!
Its Time To Wake Up! We're in trouble! Our nation is being destroyed from within and people like you are part of the problem. People like Chuck Smith have been warning you for years. If you have any intelligence at all, I'm asking you to listen to the truth, turn from your wicked ways and become part of the solution to the problems of our nation. Choose life in Jesus Christ so that you may live! The alternative is unthinkable!

End times? Sounds like fear to me to motivate people to do what "end time" preachers want - embrace their beliefs! There has been false after false prophesies about "we're in the end times" since Christ walked the earth, but time keeps proving the truth about what they preach that all can see for themselves - the preachers promoting "we're in the end times" come and go and die, proving it was really their "end times" that people were in! Time tells it all.

Why does the revival tarry? It is because God's
people tarry to obey the powerful command of
the Lord in Rev. 18:4. This is the most powerful
revival message of the Lord to his people in our time.
As in the days of Lot, it is now. Lot was not interested
to leave Sodom. God sent two angels to rescue him,
and they must persuade him to leave Sodom. When
he yet lingered, one of the angels said to him:
"Flee for your life sake ..."
Just like as Lot, God's people are not interested to
leave the great Babylon, but finally they must flee
for their life from there.

Why are the Christians divided in many churches and
denominations? It is because the truth of the Assembly
of God has never been preached in the churches. The
members of churches and denominations are not
permitted to know the truth of the Assembly of God.
If the truth of Assembly of God would be well known
among the people, then all God's people would leave
the churches, according to Rev. 18:4.
I left the great Babylon 44 years ago.
God's people are destroyed for lack of knowledge
because their preachers have rejected knowledge.
Hosea 4:6-11. Instead to preaching the truth of the
Assembly of God, they have preached lies about the
Assembly of God. The Pentecostalists have abused
the expression "Assembly of God" and used it as a
name of their church.
