We rarely read past Page Four of the Orange County Register's front page, since anything beyond that is usually Macy's ads and rehashed Associated Press or Reuters blurbs. Indeed, we didn't read past page four this morning until an eagle-eyed reader (gracias, amigo) alerted us to a full-page ad taken out by a group calling themselves "Friends of Msgr. John." The ad in question was an "Open Letter in Support of Msgr. John Urell," the priest who for years handled sex-abuse complaints in the Catholic Diocese of Orange and is currently in Canada seeking anxiety treatment for his prior responsibilities.
The ad's text can be found on the group's website. In a previous statement, group spokesperson (and Rancho Santiago Community College District board president) John Hanna states, "We are deeply saddened by the cases of sexual misconduct that have come to light over the years and we continue to pray for the healing of all those involved. However, it is fundamental to Catholic teaching that we forgive and minister to those who are suffering and in pain."
Forgive, forgive, forgive: that's all that Urell's supporters ever talk about. Forgive John Urell for his sins. Hanna was there yesterday in Judge Gail Andler's courtroom when she decided not to dismiss Orange Bishop Tod D. Brown's contempt-of-court charge for allowing Urell to leave for Canada. So were a couple of other Urell supporters (including OC Blogman Matt Cunningham and OC PR queen Meg Waters, although she told me she was in court only as "a friend of Matt."). Hanna talks about "minister[ing] to those who are suffering and in pain." However, I saw none of Urell's supporter so much as go up to sex-abuse survivors Christina Ruiz and Sarah Gray and offer condolences (we didn't even see Cunningham at their press conference the previous day--so much for the other side of the story, eh Matt?).
The Orange County Register, by the way, has consistently refused to run ads by John Manly's office asking the county's Catholics to come forward with any information on the sex-abuse scandal (full disclosure: the OC Weekly has run Manly's ads before)

Even people locked up on death row get die hard fans and even women that would marry them!
I have no understanding for this kind of thinking!
October 10, 2007 13:09
I also have no affilation or relationship with the Diocese of Orange, California. I am, however, very concerned about the disgraceful cover ups by bishops in dioceses all across the country.
As Lowell and Patty Mills have said in referring to Msgr. John Utrell, "he couldn't allow himself to succumb to dishonesty."
For that very reason, he needs to get well and he should be required to finish his testimony as to what the truth is.
Why is it that John Hanna forgets to mention that victims of childhood sexual abuse have a right to JUSTICE? Jesus speaks of justice.
I do not believe that Bishop Tod Brown acted with any kind of integrity in sending him to Southdown in Canada when he could just as well sent him to St. Lukes, a similar facility, outside of Washington, D.C.
The truth WILL come out in the end and Msgr. John needs to tell the truth. There has been too much abuse, too much suffering, too many suicides, too much covering up, too much lying and too many millions of dollars spent by bishops and dioceses fighting and further abusing real abuse victims.

"Forgive" consitutes GUILT, which requires penance (or some means toward rectification by the guilty, not innocents paying for judgements rendered) prior to absolution (or granting said 'forgiveness').
The Roman Catholic Bishops, have NOT asked for forgiveness, they have issued (laity paid for) lawyer scripted 'apologies', because in asking for forgiveness, each and every one of these guilty miters and red hats, if that had any sense of decency, let alone moral fiber, which they do not, would resign from their positions.
Instead the miters and red hats plan to fight to the last laity paid for dollar, or sold off asset, to thwart their overt GUILT & CRIMINAL enabling of thousands of child molesters, over multiple decades, of hundreds of thousands of children (JJ Report & Grand Jury Report for the Archdiocese of Philadephia are but two of many such collaborating documents).
The solution therefore, or remedy, will NOT be found in the courts, despite forced monetary settlements, but rather in the forced removal from office of each and every guilty miter or red hat enabler, by cutting off all laity funding to their diocese, or archdicoese, and forcing Rome's hand to remove them (Bernie Law was only removed in Boston after revenue plummeted by over 75% two years in a row and has never recovered since, despite spin and lies to the contrary by O'Malley), as well as canonically censored, and place each of them under house arrest, like pedophile founder of the Legionnaires of Christ, Marciel, for LIFE.
If these guilty refuse, each should be immediately, if not sooner, defrocked, and swiftly EXCOMMUNICATED!
Without TRUE accountability to those who caused, and continue to perpetrate, this MASSIVE crime spree, no real correction can, or will, occur.
Any repsentations that the US Charter of Protection will insure safety of children is a FLAT OUT LIE, and is not being equally implemented even in diocese or archdiocese that have claimed they were implementing it. The Charter is nothing more than an evil PR Stunt!
There are still hundreds of child molesters in active minitries in the USA, and thousands abroad, with many hundreds being actively aided, abetted, salaried, pensioned, hush monied, annuitied, or 'angeled', over international borders, to stop them from being deposed to testify agaisnt their own miter enablers, in the US courts.
Such is the case with Urell in Orange, such remains the case with, on the run again, O'Grady in Ireland, and at least 100 domestic ordained, now being hidden in Mexico, and many thousands globally.
For free, we also recommend DELIVER US FROM EVIL at: www.youtube.com, the 2006 US Academy Award Best Documentary nominated film, on the monster molester O'Grady and then Stockton Miter Rog 'Teflon' (no 'Mahal' in Los Angeles) Mahony's overt guilt in this case.

(we didn't even see Cunningham at their press conference the previous day--so much for the other side of the story, eh Matt?).
Gustavo:
1) I had a client meeting all Monday morning and spent the rest of the day running around catching up on work and a computer meltdown after being away on vacation for a week.
2) I didn't know about the Manly press conference. I was never notified about it nor invited.
So much for doing your homework, eh Gustavo?
As for talking to Sarah Gray and Christina Ruiz, I didn't, but I should have and wish I had. If I see them again I will be sure to tell them how sorry I am for what they went through and pray they'll be able to heal and put this behind them.
October 10, 2007 14:50
Please, Matt: You have many contributors on your fine blog. You're telling me you couldn't tell any of them to make it? And don't use the "I didn't know about it" excuse. Ever heard of picking up a phone and asking around? When I heard over the weekend that the diocese was holding a press conference, I called people to try and figure out where it was. I know you're not lazy, but in light of your avowed interest in defending Urell, not attending the victim's press conference on Monday speaks volumes about your biases in this story. And guess what? The victims had another press conference yesterday, just before the diocese did. Why didn't you cover that?
October 10, 2007 14:51
I really do not care if Urell can walk on water, He KNEW children were being raped and sodomized and orally copulated (AND WORSE) and did NOTHING to stop it. This is the thing that sets Roman Catholic Clergy Perverts & Their Enablers Apart from the average pervert who is an umployed house painter and lives out of the back of his station wagon. Clergy, especially Catholic Clergy, are supposed to set a moral standard and they have failed on an unbelievable scale. And do not give me that bologna about how we are all sinners.
Sexually butchering children goes far beyond sinning. Read the files on Father Siegfried Widera and see what he did to his victims. And then wonder how someone could do such things to another Human Being, let alone children.
October 10, 2007 15:26
I don't know about Matt, but I thought the whole episode outside was a media circus and not the right time and place for me to offer my personal expressions of sorrow for what happened to them. Maybe I was wrong for not going up to them at the time.
I will be sending them a note with my thoughts.

"One murder is a tragedy, a thousand a statistic."
Joseph Stalin
It would appear the Red Hats & Miters continue to believe and practice, by clear and premediated, action, that they side with Joseph Stalin. So be it.
It does not mean, we the laity, paying 100% of the bills, have to support, or condone it.
Perhaps, only perhaps, the Holy Spirit is at work here, though in a Draconian fashion, to bring the Church back to what it was intended to be, a non materialistic, or much less corrupt, institution.
Clearly, the Roman Catholic Church is demonstrating through both words and deeds (or "fruits"), via it's so-called miters and red hats, there are no checks, no balances, a core mean spiritness, with anarchy and unchecked greed, on a global basis, prevailing. It is a situation that even The Devil blushes with envy on.
No human institution is perfect, but among the historically dysfunctional ones, the Roman Catholic Church, today, is indeed digging it's own grave, if not already voluntarily jumping in.
I'm fairly confident there will be no resurrection for such overtly demonstrated EVIL with little or no remorse.

Perhaps says get bent like in a scuba diving no deco stop ascent to the surface bent!
This is not about win and loose or choosing sides that came out badly like the Bishop's. It's not about your egos as a reason for not talking to people that have been raped, molested and hurt as children because your side lost.
This is about kids hurt in the past and stopping it from ever occurring again!
Matt Jubal come on and get with the change that will make it better for future kids. Your side lost for a reason "they were wrong in what they let happen with kids". We all win now! The lay catholic for sure will win as they won't have to worry if their children are being raped in the future hopefully. If Brown go's to jail and they make an example of him then we will all win for sure.
October 10, 2007 17:01
Even Jesus found some sins so heinous that He could not forgive them. When He was being nailed to the cross, He said, "FATHER, forgive them for they know not what they do." He did not offer forgiveness, He asked His Father to do so. And these men did not KNOW what they were doing. The actions of Msgr. Urell mortally impacted many innocent lives. He understands that or he would not have broken down on the stand. At least that shows he has a conscience. However, like I said, the actions he took while in the position of being able to do something for these victims is something for which he will have to ask God forgiveness. Besides, forgiveness does not mean that the sinner does not suffer the consequences for his crimes. If a murderer is convicted, he has to serve his time. We can forgive him all we want, but that does not lessen his consequences. Even Pope John Paul II forgave his shooter, but he did not ask to have him released from prison. Msgr. Urell has to face the consequences of his actions, no matter how sorry he is, no matter how much he is loved, no matter how forgiving we want to be. He changed peoples' lives forever, and there are consequences for that.

Please, Matt: You have many contributors on your fine blog. You're telling me you couldn't tell any of them to make it? And don't use the "I didn't know about it" excuse. Ever heard of picking up a phone and asking around?
Please, Gustavo: How can I ask a contributor to attend a press conference I didn't know about? Based on what would I even be picking up the phone and asking around?
When I heard over the weekend that the diocese was holding a press conference, I called people to try and figure out where it was.
You heard about it over the weekend. I didn't. Since you are devoid of facts in this argument, I'll supply you with some. I spent all day in an airplane with my family flying back from a week vacation during which I didn't even answer my phone. We walked through our door shortly before midnight.
We slept in half of Sunday because our body clocks were way off, and then took the kids to the parish fiesta. My computer had a meltdown and wouldn't boot up, so I wasn't checking my e-mail (not that it would have done any good, since I received no notification from Manly and Company about the press conference. But they were sure to tell you and the rest of the media. I wonder why?).
Monday morning I got the kids ready, dropped them off at school, zipped off to Irvine for a client meeting the rest of the morning, and spent the rest of the day - except for a useless hour on the phone with tech support -- out of the house on business.
I know you're not lazy, but in light of your avowed interest in defending Urell, not attending the victim's press conference on Monday speaks volumes about your biases in this story.
And your continued baseless and rebutted insistence that I avoided attending the press conference speaks volumes about your biases.
The victims had another press conference yesterday, just before the diocese did. Why didn't you cover that?
Because I was inside the courthouse with half of the other media in attendance with Callahan and the Bishop and didn't know they were having a press conference afterward. John Manly and his associates had plenty of time to tell me they were going to hold a press conference, but they didn't. Maybe if I sat next to Manly and had him writing notes to me, I would have known.
Frank Mickadeit was inside the courthouse, too. Are you going to accuse him of deliberately avoiding the victims press conference. Conversely, should you be accused of deliberately missing the inside-the-courthouse hallway presser, and therefore being a de facto Manly flack?
I thought reporters were supposed to fact-check, not make claims based on uninformed assumptions.

Jubal for all readers, that I just learned, myself, from a Roman Catholic Prelate friend, is Matt Cunningham a southern California far right wing conservative blogger.
I personally have absolutely no problem with conservatives, as I am generally one myself, but as a scientist, tend deal in REALITY, nor incendiary rhetoric.
The line of argumentation that Matt Cunnighmam (aka 'Jabal')would seem to be dealing in, is pure rhetoric harassment, as opposed to in any way leading to discourse, that truly engages the overt criminality of the Roman Catholic Church, and in particular Bishop Brown, or the spiriting of Urell out of the country (which is a repeated pattern when a deposition or witness is about to out a miter, or red hat, for criminal obstruction of justice, collusion, and rackateering).
My ordained friend had extremely unrepeated vugarities of the Bishop Of Orange, not fit for public polite discourse, but concluded that Brown "should be defrocked (at a minimum)".
I think the mindless banter I am reading on this blog encited by Mr. Cunnigham is ill informed, childish , meritless, and in point of fact strategically done, to cloud the real issue of vetted daily reporting of ongoing criminality, at 100% the cost of the laity, of guilty, unaccountable, and unpunished, pedophile enablers, like Brown, Mahony, Brom, Barnes, Curry, Steinbock, Walsh, Weigland, Rivera, Pell, Law, O'Malley, Egan, George, McCarrick, to name only a very few.
For daily vetted coverage, to make up your own minds, as to the billions of laity dollars already spent, and many billions of dollars more to come, with still no real change in the Church toward protecting children, as there are many hundreds of pedophiles still in active ministry in the USA, and many thousands globally, and many hundreds being hidden overseas to prevent them testifying against enabling miters and red hats, we suggest:

Dear Diving Donkey Boy:
Jabal, so cowardly, as not to disclose he is Matt Cunningham, southern California right wing blogger, because somehow he is personally ashamed he has no logical, or substative, argumentation for his position on defending a ring of pedophiles, will more than likely NOT reply to your retort, because it is so basic in real logic.
To repeat, would one have a known child molester baby sit one's own children!?
Brilliant Diving Donkey Boy; absolutely and substantially, BRILLIANT!

Matt, you can make all the excuses you want for missing the victims' press conference, but let the record show you run one of Southern California's best blogs and have correspondents contribute on various issues. The Urell issue has obviously received continued play on OC Blog--am I to believe that no one else was aware of the story, and that you didn't tell anyone to keep an eye on this while you were gone? Rachanee usually covers the Catholic sex-abuse scandal for the Register; for whatever reason, she hasn't been at any of the conferences. In her place is longtime crime reporter Larry Welborn. That's what organizations who purport to cover both sides do--you know this. So the question remains: why didn't OC Blog cover the victims' first (or second) conference?
Oh, and Frank didn't need to be at the victims' second conference: he was there on Monday.
October 10, 2007 20:59
Russ,
Matt can't stand the blog I blog on! I think he should serve time in the Gulag Archipelago. Then he would have a little bit of an idea what it's like to be a victim.
Matt
Get some substance on how we feel Matt and read: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch, Alexander Solzenitzen. That would be close to what Urell did to victims in his position of truth and trust.
Matt I don't have as good of an education as you. But come on buddy no one can be as ignorant of the fact's as you pretend to be without a motive of some sort. What is your motive in defending a man that kept hidden abuse? Let kids melt around him as men ruined children for ever. And stayed silent! That's what people like Urell did to the Jews Matt silence and it was a real killer. Never Matt never will we remain silent. We're on Front Street now baby. out
October 10, 2007 21:13
So the question remains: why didn't OC Blog cover the victims' first (or second) conference?
Gustavo:
The only question that remains is "What does it take to get a simple fact through your thick skull?" I didn't know about the press conference. D-I-D N-O-T K-N-O-W. That's not an excuse -- it's just reality. Whether you like that reality is immaterial.
No, I didn't tell anyone to keep an eye on it while I was gone. As far as I know, none of the other members of the Blogpen care about the issue. I don't tell them what to write about.
I don't have a staff I can order around. I don't even do this full-time. Before leaving on vacation I e-mailed the most regular writers and asked them to up their output while I was gone. Our intern Jonathan took care of the Roundup in my absence. Otherwise, I left it up to them to decide what they wanted to write about.
If it chafe your behind so badly that I wasn't at the press conference, then tell your good buddy Manly to let me know next time when he's going to have one.
As for the second one, I think I've explained that one already as well. Would it help if I wrote this out in crayon?
October 10, 2007 22:04
"Would it help if I wrote this out in crayon?"
It would for me would you do that for me. Thanks
"D-I-D N-O-T K-N-O-W"
We've been over this already Matt. That is no excuse for not showing up to the press event. Abuse victims are important as they are shaping the future generations not to have this problem. Without any help from you I might add. Matt, we're going to give you one last chance to come clean on your side of the street. Don't be like Urell and be silent. That is a form of lying also. Do you know how to be honest and true to your self and your family? I feel sorry for you in your situation; it must be hard so far removed from the mainstream of thinking. I bet all suffer around you! Do you have any real friends or are they fair weather friends?
October 10, 2007 22:17
Matt Cunningham please loose the stupid Jubal name. You blog all over with this fake name or annon and try to sway threads with your facist ideology. Use your real name and earn your money the right way!
And before you reply with your stupid quotes and italics, I am not being paid by anyone to post their spin so my name is not important.
I do consider myself a "good" catholic, not because someone tells me so, but because my faith tells me so. My faith tells me to admit my sins, ask for forgiveness, repent and do better. The OC Diocise needs to follow their own preachings. The men and women of the Diocise must hold themselves to the same rules of our church as the faithful. This continued defense of criminals taints the entire catholic clergy.
October 11, 2007 08:47
Seems the OC Blog has turned into an excuse engine for pervert protectors and an electronic flak for Suncal. Too bad -- it used to be good.
October 11, 2007 11:08
Mr. Hanna:
You really should have gone up to Sarah and Christina and expressed your support. As a survivor, I know that there is never a bad time to tell someone that you support her and her struggle.
Sometimes the hard thing to do is the right thing to do.
But I am perplexed - you are scared to tell a victim that you support her, yet have no problem throwing your name and the name of the RSCCD behind a man who (one example only) tried to pay off a priest they knew was molesting kids (Christian Andersen).
Matt and the OC Blog are one thing - but you oversee a public educational institution. One that educates minors.
I am also waiting to see how Gene Howard (CEO of Orangewood and member of the Diocese review board) weighs in on this.
Both of you are putting the reputations of good institutions on the line to protect men who have been PROVEN to protect molesters.
That's troubling.
October 11, 2007 13:41
used to be good? heh.
October 11, 2007 13:44
Survivor: As I commented, maybe I should have gone up to Ms. Gray and Ms. Ruiz. But the reason I did not was not because I was scared as you suggest. I just thought it wasn't the time and place. Of note, even M. Gray commented that she would have preferred the Bishop communicate his expressions to her over the phone rather then at a press conference. But again I have sent notes to all four of the victims.
And let me make it clear--I never used the name of the college district when discussing this nor was it on the press release. It didn't even come up in the first conversation I had with the Register reporter--she called me up later and asked me if I was on any boards and I honestly answered her question. Gustavo did not talk to me but knows who I am and so put that in. My involvement is personal and nothing to do with the district or my political party, which was also mentioned.
October 11, 2007 18:17
Mr. Hanna,
If your invovlement was personal as you claim, then a nice note or letter sent to John Urell himself would have been a nice and personal gesture.
BUT, By purchasing a year long contract for a webpage and opening a PO Box for mail unfortunatly makes yor personal involvement a bit more of a public spectical. One you enter the arena of public displays of support, you and everything you stand for and represent now become in focus as well. Dont blame the media and reporters for "outing" anything. They will dig and dig until their fingers bleed.
If it's so personal, then don't take calls from reporters.
P.S. And as far as the timeline, using the "one day this, the next day that" is called a turn of phrase. To say "one day he was a rich bishop and the next day he was living in a condo in phoenix" doesnt mean it all happened in two fucking days you idiot.
October 12, 2007 11:28
Mr. H:
Go back and read the posts. I was accused of throwing the name of my college district around and simply responded that I did not do that. I didn't "blame" the press--they are just doing their job-- but was simply setting the record straight.
As for your last paragraph, I have no idea what you're talking about and certainly have no intention of responding to f bombs and name calling.
October 12, 2007 16:22
Mr. Hanna -
Unfortunately, your role with the RSCCD is relevant to your role with the "Friends of Msgr. Urell."
Especially since now the group has outed victims of sexual abuse without their permission. Including a police officer.
If an employee of the RSCCD had done the things that Urell had - as exposed in documents - he would have lost his job. In fact, his actions went against the Student Code of Conduct posted on your website.
You have the right to quietly support those you "feel sorry for." But as a public figure, you put the reputation of the board and the college district on the line when you put your name on the press release. Am I suggesting you go underground? No.
I am just suggesting that you do a little research before you throw your considerable weight behind a cause.
Mr. Cunningham is a mouthpiece ... you are in charge of a large, diverse and vulnerable student population. You have a higher responsibility.
October 13, 2007 07:16
There is no longer any doubt in my mind that the "Friends of Msgr. John" is a self-serving ENABLING tool to further assist the Diocese of Orange, Bishop Brown and his attorneys, in cover ups, PR spin and aiding and abetting sex crimes.
1. Since the website was created, there are only THREE comments posted and multiple comments have been submitted and never posted. If the website was a good faith effort to support Mon. Urell and openness for support of sex abuse crimes committed by employees of the Diocese, this scenario would be very different.
2. Why would anyone post a deposition with the names of sex abuse victims in it, without the direction of an attorney representing the Diocese of Orange, Mon. Urell, Bishop Brown and the many others? How many times will Diocesan supporters vicariously traumatize sex abuse victims?
3. Or, maybe "Friends of Msgr. John" did get the permission of Diocesan attorneys and the General Counsel and were hoping for a BIG PAY day in court, in the event defamation or slander was posted on the website. Sadly, "Friends of Msgr. John" and the Diocese really do not get it.... and victims of sex crimes and their families continually make efforts to seek truths and justice, without self-serving ENABLING tools. They want children in the future to be safe!!!!!
4. Whoever authorized the "disclosure" on the "Friends of Msgr. John" website, needs to be disbarred and return to legal conflicts of interest curriculum... and whoever authorized Matt Cunningham's website link needs to be disbarred. Is there spyware on Cunningham's website that records all the IP addresses, with hope that posts will be damaging enough to sue in a court of law, thereby replenishing the Diocesan financial portfolio?
Hopefully, Mon. Urell does not have access to a computer... If he does, his acute anxiety disorder will transition to a permanent disability sooner than later.
November 21, 2007 06:41
On Nov 17, John Hanna came out against child victims of abuse. He also engaged in his own physical altercation at the California Democratic Party resolutions committee meeting. Check out these stories done by a group that is trying to stop abuse against youth.
