I am certain there are many things Gustavo could have written about these pervert priests and their criminal enabling bishops but, out of respect for the victims, he did not.

It's amazing that this writer would cite that quote in the book. The cold reality is that no other writer (save Steve Greenhut) has spoken out for the victims in Orange County. In fact no reporter has done more to expose the Diocese crimes than Gustavo. For example he was the first to break the story about Bishop Brown himself being accused of sexual abuse.

It's interesting that Mr. Larsen accuses Arellano of crossing lines but never mentions the Diocese crossing lines. One example that comes to mind is concealing pedophile priest Al Ramos with the full knowledge he was molesting altar boys at donkey shows in Mexico. The diocese conduct continues to this very day. Somehow, the latest Orange priest arrested in June for sexually assaulting a boy after feeding him tequila and attempting to rent a porn movie in a cheap anaheim motel managed to avoid felony prosecution all together. He was charged by the Anaheim City attorneys office wit "commercial burglary". He recieved no sex offender registration and a misdemeanor burglary conviction. Amazing. Don't your recall Fr. John Lenihan, one of the very first publicly admitted child molesters to be exposed in OC in 1991. Of course the public now knows there were many perps before him---they just weren't exposed until their victims were able to make it public by prosecuting these predators themselves thru civil lawsuits. Obviously the DA wasn't going to..something I wouldn't doubt he prayed about when he attended his own Catholic Church masses and decided to look the other way. Michael Harris got a freeby pass too from criminal prosecution!

Surely you don't forget how Lenihan publicly publicly admitted in 91 that he molested a girl after his victim had to come publicly forward with the pd tape recorded admissions and records that the Diocese refused to give to parishioners. The diocese had these records since 1978 and the pd tape recording was done in 1989. Brown finally removed him after pressure from media reports in 2001!!! after Lenihan decided he wan't to talk about how he abused the kid and others! The diocese knew about that all along too.

Surely, you must also recall how after he was exposed in 91 he was then placed on the diocese's clergy personnel board that deals with deciding what to do with known and accused priests. But that wasn't enough, he headed the largest parish in OC and then his buddy, Bishop McFarland put another pedophile in Lenihan's next parish in Dana Point and Lenihan was the head pastor in charge of him. There's been at least 5 molesters who worked at St. Edwards.

So, when you have these crimes/cover-ups going on for decades, you bet, victims and people are grateful for reporters like Gustavo who is warning the public and yelling it from the roof tops, because this accused pedophile, Bishop Brown, and all his predecessors crossed the line of the people of OC's personal space and have violated our children for a very long time. And of couse circulated perps to other dioceses with the help of their fellow complicit bishops.

Lastly, we still have a whole diocese full of complacent, apathetic and indoctrinated Catholics who just don't want to or can't give up the false image of their priests and church, no matter what and how many crimes they commit against kids and everyone else in the County at risk of their pedophile ring.

Oh, how the mighty fall.

They can line up apologists from one coast to the other, they can tell every church-going member to scorn the victims, they can bring their Pope back for more empty gestures, but their time is ending and they just don't know it yet.

Their priesthood can never be replenished. Their schools must continue to close. They'll go down kicking and screaming, and that's the last of our frustrations. They will never admit that they know what brought them down. That millstone in the middle of the sea is theirs to keep. Still, they will go down and be gone.

It is not a burning hatred of them that brings them down, it is the human instinct to protect children that has done them in. We could be kinder and more graceful in watching their fall. But child molesting doesn't get that deference. It takes dogged determination to wipe out this practice. So we must carry on making sure that these organized rings continue to be battered.
