OC Diocese Lawyer Trashes OC Weekly But Still Loses

Last month, famed Newport Beach attorney John Manly sent two associates to Monterey so they could argue before a judge why Manly should depose Catholic Diocese of Orange Bishop Tod D. Brown. Why Monterey? Brown was the Diocese of Monterey Chancellor until 1989, and Manly represents an alleged clerical sex-abuse victim from the region.

Brown, needless to say, doesn't want to go through a Manly deposition, mainly because His Excellency is terrible before an interrogator and has sicced his lawyers on Manly & Co. in court. But in the course of defending his boss before State Superior Court Judge Kay T. Kingsley on June 29, longtime Orange diocese attorney Peter Callahan couldn't help but to take a swipe at the OC Weekly.

According to a court transcript, Callahan referred to my recent article on Bishop Brown regarding an undisclosed molestation allegation as having appeared "only in a—and I use the word generously—publication that's handed out for creative massage parlors and coffeehouses and whose advertising runs to escort services and the like." Furthermore, Callahan described the story as "not a compelling matter of public interest" since "it was not picked up in the legitimate press."

Notice how Callahan didn't deny the story, or say it was full of lies. Nor has Callahan or the Orange diocese ever disputed the facts in the dozens of stories we've written about their pedophile-protecting ways over the years. But no hurt feelings on our part. After all, Judge Kingsley denied Callahan's request and is allowing Manly to take Bishop Brown's deposition in the near future.

As a parent with four children who escaped the many sexual predators employed by the Diocese of Orange, placed at my children's school and church, AFTER the Diocese knew that sex crimes had been committed, crimes that destroyed the lives of precious children and families, when will Bishop Brown take off the blinders?

As a legal secretary for 25 years, in the legal world I have witnessed, attorneys take an oath to uphold justice NOT obstruct justice. In the OC world of politically-connected Catholics, the laws of justice are manipulated and ignored, NEVER in the interests of the protections of children and families--only in the interests of financial portfolios of conflicted attorneys who know better than to violate laws.

IN MY OPINION, Bishop Brown would never have to be deposed if his attorneys were advising him in good faith. Sadly, $100 million wasn't enough to get the message to Bishop Brown.

While Callahan and company, along with the Diocesan General Counsel, build their financial retirement portfolios on the dime of the faithful in the pews, dirty secrets, sex crimes, hate crimes, the laws of justice, truth and equality disappear in the OC -- the safety of children and employees are placed at the lowest priority while law enforcement officials in the OC ignore reports for investigations and illegal practices.

No child, employee or family is safe from the wrath of power and abuse, especially under the supervision of the Diocese of Orange, Callahan & company and the Diocesan General Counsel. ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS....

Bishop Brown, it is time to clean your house!

When The California Bishops, GUILTY, and still UNACCOUNTABLE, for their DECADES of obstruction of justice, collusion, perjury, lies, ENABLING, aid and abetting fugtives from justice to flee prosecution, harboring fugitives in Mexico-Asia & Elesewhere - Paying Them Their Salaries/Pension/Hush Money while they continue to rape, orally copulate, sexually assault and sodomize children, like MAHONY, BARNES, BROWN, BROM, WALSH, are EXCOMMUNICATED, and their life works canonically CENSORED, and they themselves spend the rest of their mortal lives in prison; then, and only then, will justice be served.

To date, the sexual abuse criminal cover up by less than 3,500 red hats, Ratzinger, and the Bishops, has cost the global LAITY of 1.1 billion strong, who pay all the bills, about $12 BILLION US DOLLARS, and counting, with no end forthcoming, no improvement in the protection of children, and no accountability for the guilty curia.

No Bishop Accountability, No Laity Monies, is the ONLY solution that will work.

May Mahony, Brom, Brown, Barnes, Walsh, Law, etc., and their ilk, burn in the eternal fires of Hell for their unaccounted GUILT.

Any argumentation they were only protecting the Church is a clkear lie and FRAUD.

    Respectfully submitted,

I'm not a victim, have never met or spoken to a victim, am not a party to any litigation with the Church, am not a victim's rights advocate or member of any organization that is, but am a daily Mass penitent, Communion Service Lay Presider, Mass Lector and international businessman, who travels the world annuallly for his job, and has personally seen the OVERT & ONGONING criminal cover up first hand. A FESTERNG POX OB THESE MITER & RED HAT'S SOULS, if not already in the ownership of The Devil.

  4. Ed Snowdon says:

The Roman Catholic priesthood is a gay profession.

Because of persecution, gay people have sought places to hide. Celibacy helps gay men to hide in the well-funded profession of the RC priesthood where they can be who they are and have all the homosexual intimacy they want. A system of gay patronage also exists to keep gay priests groomed for leadership positions. These realities are more or less hidden from public awareness, denied by the clergy as preposterous, and rationalized into encapsulation by the faithful who want the illusion of consistent placid holiness in their church.

Consider that just about all of the priests who leave end up marrying women - they don't partner with other men. I believe that the majority homosexual culture has driven them away in an number of different modalities over the years. Mandatory celibacy sustains this safe haven in the priesthood. The core meaning of celibacy is that a man does not marry a woman. Sexual continence is an inferred component. The bishops won't discuss a married priesthood because they don't want to dismantle the protective walls they have built and continue to sustain.

One reason why the sex abuse atrocity in the RCC went undetected for so long is that church leadership wanted to keep this core secret about themselves diverted from public attention. Parishioners would be scandalized and not support a predominantly gay sexually-active priesthood. Church leadership didn't want reporters like Gustavo Arellano checking out the links between homosexuality in the priesthood and the secrecy surrounding the sex abuse crisis. They're glad to have people think it is just about money. Additionally, leading a double life opens one up to blackmail and extortion. Abusers are manipulators and have taken advantage of the priesthood's secrets/weaknesses for their own access to children. They have received full legal support from the church once they have been detected for the same protective reasons.

I am gay-friendly and support gay rights, but I do not believe that the advances being achieved in the human rights arena should dissuade critical analysis of homosexual polity in the priesthood and its past and future consequences for the entire church.

  5. Victoria Martin says:

The Lawyer for the Diocese of Orange, Peter Callahan, should have kept his mouth shut, when referring to the Orange County Weekly. For it is indeed sad when a weekly throw away journal has to take over the job of championing the cause of the sexually victimized children of the Roman Catholic Church; a church that operates in a constant state of moral bankruptcy, without common decency and humanity. These victims who were raped and sodomized by the anointed of the church (Roman Catholic Priests, Brothers, Deacons and Nuns) were abandoned by the faith they once lived for and loved; and so, broken hearted and broken spirited, they were adrift until a few years ago when these perverted crimes by the Clergy of the church, along with the hierarchy (lowerarchy, that is) who protected them, became known. Ever since then, the Orange County Weekly and specifically, Gustavo Arellano, have been fighting for the cause of children everywhere. And, thanks to the press, victims were able to get in touch with other victims; and then they found they were not along anymore. Thank You, OC Weekly! Thank You Gustavo!!!! GOD Bless You! Long Live The Fourth Estate!
