Brooke (R-Mass.) and counsel to the United States Senate's Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. His Timothy D. Naegele & Associates firm, which specializes in law involving banking, financial institutions and the Internet, has offices in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. But a civil case occupying his time currently involves his son, who just accepted a plea deal for a 2009 DUI car crash near Hearst Castle that killed one and injured two others. More >>

Sobriety Stop Tonight in Buena Park, Saturday in Garden Grove; Costa Mesa Eyes Motorcycles

There's mucho police enforcement going on along Orange County streets, starting tonight with a DUI/drivers license checkpoint in the 8000 block of La Palma Avenue in Buena Park from 7 p.m. through 2 a.m. Saturday. The Garden Grove Police Department holds its own on an undisclosed stretch of that city from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.

Police in Costa Mesa go after an entirely different set of drivers that same night.

To herald the arrival of Stinko de Drinko weekend, the CHP, Garden Grove Police Department and Orange County Sheriff's Department are deploying saturation patrols tonight.

Saturation in this case does not define the human pickling that will take place in bars, pubs and house parties across Orange County, but the police resources that will be poured into areas known for DUI arrests, accidents and fatalities.

UPDATE, APRIL 27, 11:58 A.M.: If you believe sobriety checkpoints cost cities too much for the inconvenience and scant arrests they generate, the Costa Mesa Police Department counters with this: you're wrong.

Funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints save $6 for every $1 spent, claims CMPD, citing NHTSA figures.

Sloppy roadways should keep you from getting your drinky-winky on before climbing behind the wheel tonight, Friday the 13th. If you're in Garden Grove, here's another reason you and Sailor Jerry should stay inside: Police will saturate the streets like raindrops beginning at 7 tonight. "If you drive drunk, Garden Grove PD will be looking for you," says Sgt Carl Whitney in a statement about tonight's "Zero Tolerance" DUI saturation patrol. "If you're over the limit and we catch you, you will be arrested." Mercy.

[Castro No Longer With Sheriff's Department] Mario Manuel Castro, Sheriff's Deputy, Convicted of Second DUI

UPDATE: March 20, 11:20 A.M.: Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department, says Castro "separated" from the department on Feb. 22. He wouldn't say if Castro was fired or quit, citing employment privacy laws.

Mario Manuel Castro apparently ditched class the day the Orange County Sheriff's Department conducted training on what not to do when you've had too many pops: drive on the wrong side of the road and toward an Orange police officer. 

Castro was convicted and sentenced Friday for driving under the influence of alcohol with a .24 blood alcohol level on the wrong side of the road toward an oncoming marked police vehicle, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office.
