DeWayne McKinney, RIP, WTF?

Just days after the Orange County District Attorney filed murder charges against Felix Abreu, the Santa Ana man who allegedly smashed his car into Arthur Carmona earlier this year, a man wrongfully charged and convicted of burglary a decade ago, another wrongfully convicted inmate from Orange County has died.

According to L.A. Times reporter Stuart Pfeiffer, DeWayne MicKinnney, who was released from prison eight years ago after spending nearly two decades behind bars for a 1980 murder/armed robbery at a Buena Park Burger King, died in a late-night scooter accident in Honolulu. McKinney had taken his million-dollar settlement with the DA's office and invested in ATM machines in Hawaii, which turned a handsome profit. He became a multi-millionaire and lived quietly in a beach compound on Oahu.

Now he's gone, like Carmona, a victim of traffic fatality. He reportedly hit a light pole and was thrown from the scooter to the pavement. He wasn't wearing a helmet and died at the hospital. Carmona was killed by Abreu's speeding vehicle after fleeing a late-night party at a trailer park. Abreu faces 11 years if convicted.

    Nick,
DeWayne was a casual friend of mine while I was attendiong classes at UC Irvine. He worked in the Audio Visual dept atthe school and I remembered him from OC Weekly articles so i struck up a conversation with him and got to know him.

I do believe that the Burger King was in the City of Orange and not Buena Park. i would check your records on that one.

I WAS INCARCERATED WITH DEWAYNE MCKINNEY AT LANCASTER STATE PRISON FOR 5 YEARS PRIOR TO HIS RELEASE. DURING THAT TIME, DEWAYNE WAS A HEARFELT PERSON WITH DREAMS AND AMBITIONS OF ONE DAY BEING RELEASED.DEWAYNE AND I SPENT ALOT OF TIME TOGETHER IN THE PRISON LAW LIBRARY RESEARCHING INFORMATION ABOUT WRONGFUL CONVICTION DUE TO MIS-IDENTIFICATION.HE CONTACTED THE INNOCENCE PROJECT AND WAS EVENTUALLY RELEASED. UPON HIS RELEASE HE MAINTAINED A HUMBLE, SOFT SPOKEN DEMEANOR AND WOULD ALWAYS BE THERE TO HELP OR GIVE TO WHOEVER HE COULD. I APPRECIATE ALL HE DID FOR ME, HE WAS A GOOD FRIEND,I SEND MY CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY, I LOVE HIM AND MAY HE REST IN PEACE, DANNY BOY

  3. COINCIDENCE says:

DeWayne McKinney killed in a traffic fatality and Arthur Carmona's accused hit and run killer both occurred occur within days of the 2 year anniversary of the:

    1. Beating tragedy of John Derek Chamberlain, in the OC jail, on October 5, 2006. Chamberlain was in custody for possession of child porn, and

    2. Sonoma County's release of John Mark Karr who was also awaiting trial for child porn but . Karr was released on the same day Chamberlain was murdered in the OC jail, October 5, 2006, because the Sonoma County Sheriff or DA lost the porn evidence against Karr.

If anyone can figure out why the battery against cohabitant charges filed against John Derek Chamberlain by the OC District Attorney's office on July 28, 2006, OCSC Case No. 06HM06200, REQUIRED three hearings after Chamberlain's death on October 5, 2006, and why the public record states Chamberlain is a "Fugitive", please share. What a waste of taxpayer dollars to hold three hearings when the defendant is deceased. Hearings:

    January 26, 2007, Dept. H7
    February 16, 2007, Dept. H7
    February 23, 2007, Dept. H7
    October 4, 2007, Dept. H13
