Latest Los Angeles Times piece: my unperfect Spanish. Awright, pochos and wabs: go at it! And gabachos: how important is it to learn Spanish in these days of reconquista? Also, enjoy an oldie-but-goodie interview in the Utne Reader that appears in this month's edition!
Lisa says:
Who cares about your Spanish? People should be more concerned with learning English or they won't get very far in this country.

I dunno. I can barely go two blocks in some sections of the O.C. on English only. I'm learning more and more Espanol just to get through a normal day. It's OK with me. I took French in High School, and who speaks French? It doesn't really bother me. It's sort of like living in Hawaii and speaking pidgin. A little of this and a little of that. Makes everyday life a little more interesting. Latinos certainly know more English than us Gringos know Spanish.

I like that Utne Reader article. His description of you as subversive is right on -- I hadn't thought of that before but it's perfect.

Alex Brant-Zawadzki says:
I really need to learn Spanish. People come knock on my door three, four times a day and either ask "Hablas espanol?" or just "Senora?", both of which are answerable with "No," at which point they go away. Maybe I just need a senora.
I think one of the knockers was selling skin cream made from sea turtles.

I remember meeting a guy at UCLA more than 20 years ago who was headed for a big political career. He was Mexican-American Royalty of some kind from East L.A., connected to everyone who mattered. I think he was working in Roybal's office at the time.
He was taking Spanish on the side with some kind of fake ID at a community college at night. Why? Because he didn't speak a word of it, and needed "authenticity" as a real Mexican for his political career.
I am not sure whether I'm annoyed or relieved that I can't remember his name.

I wonder which is worse, to sound like Apu when you're speaking Spaning, or to sound like Ralph Wiggum.

Lisa says:
If people come and knock on my door and ask me if I speak Spanish they'd better be careful because I would not be so nice. Why in the hell would I want to buy their junk? Go and get an education and a real job instead of peddling your crap to people that don't want or need it.

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray chicago mornin
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
cause if theres one thing that she dont need
Its another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
And the doorbell rings
someone at the door asks what language i speak
It's another example of my hood turnin'
Into a ghetto...

Lisa says:
Well I am just saying that I don't go knocking on people's doors and ask them if they speak English. I am just sick of seeing my neighborhood turn into a ghetto.

What gives?
How come the SAP "channel" on my TV translates Spanish from English-speaking shows but won't translate English from those Spanish-speaking stations?
Why the heck not? Seems like an opportunity for additional market share to me.
But I'm just a greengo who would like to hear more spanish to keep my ears sharp to my favorite romance language.
