Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona--indicted by federal prosecutors for public corruption--claims that surreptitious wires worn by co-conspirator Don Haidl, a former assistant sheriff, prove his innocence.
Indeed, the sheriff's lawyer says that Carona “is so anxious to fight these charges that we have to hold him back.”
If this is true and not just shameless spin, I challenge Carona to do something in his power: play the contents of the tapes in their entirety for the public now.
Show us that FBI agents are liars, as you claim. Show us that you didn't try to get Haidl to perjure himself about bribes you took for years. Show the Orange County Republican Party that your character is pure. Show the Orange County Sheriff's Department that I've been wrong about you all these years.
Or, as I suspect, are you afraid--no, terrified--of what those tapes reveal?
We're waiting. . . .
P.S. We're familiar with your PR playbook, sheriff. Playing select portions of the tapes for a friendly OC Register reporter/columnist won't meet the challenge.

All great things are simple,
and many can be expressed in single words:
freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.
Sir Winston Churchill, British Statesman (1874 - 1965)
Sheriff Carona: IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING! No more delays.
December 27, 2007 16:23
I know Carona personally. He is a liar.
December 27, 2007 19:25
Imagine... Scooter Libby stated "I'm innocent," Duke Cunningham stated "I'm innocent," Jeffrey Nielsen stated "I'm innocent," Jaramillo stated "I'm innocent," Haidl stated "My son is innocent," Cavallo stated "I'm innocent," and the Republican list of "I'm innocent" continues.
The Register reports that Jones Day is going to represent Carona FREE OF CHARGE!!!!! Wow, does this mean the international law firm of Jones Day is innocent too? Innocent of violating conflict of interest statutes and pro bono laws of the land. EVERYONE is innocent... yet, those claiming innocence have all plead GUILTY in a court of law!!!!!
GO JONES DAY!!! Will this law firm have the POLITICAL INFLUENCE to pull another "I'm innocent" rabbit out of its hat. SOMETHING SMELLS!!!!
December 27, 2007 21:12
Moxley, this is the funniest thing I've read all day! Thanks for the chuckle. Carona was probably peeing in his pants over this...
December 28, 2007 03:27
Scott,
You continue to show a great obcession over the Corona case, when the entire judgicial system in Orange County has been and continues to be exploited.
Thousands of people, mostly men, have been raped robbed, lost their worldly possessions, families and personal freedoms over minor offences and indiscretions caught on video tape, or audio tape recording... These are snap shots or small tid bits in time all of us have had moments of stupidity.
WHy do you continue to pile drive on this one individual when the legal system as a whole acts like a bunch of brass pirates to the point of raising the eyebrows of the international community?
I know many children who miss thier dads, who have had there promise of opportunities to become sucessful citizens stepped on by a bunch of power hungry money grubbers..
Many woman & men who have used the system wish they could have stopped the disasterous outcomes and sometimes deadly consiquences that have ruined so many lives.
Nobody wants to take about the facts of disappearing parents, broken friendships, lost loved ones caused by folly.
Does Mike Corona really need to continue to be your whipping boy?
Are you personally being threatened? If not how about moving on to more productive reporting.
Personally, I am shocked at how easy it is for people to be stripped of all thier assets and put in a position of homedlessness or worst just by manipulating the system.
Being in the holiday spirit, maybe it is time to give some of your scapegoats a rest, they certainly are paying a heavy price now.
Your a gutsy guy, don't let that privilidge go to your head.
Respectfully,
Scott
December 28, 2007 08:27
Scott: That last guy sounds like one of those people who told you you were wrong about Carona during the election last year. Now, that it is obvious that you were right, they want to silence you. Ignore the two-faced bastards!
December 28, 2007 09:39
(Crap posted by someone using the name "Scott": Why do you continue to pile-drive on this one individual ...?") ** Duuh! Because he's emblematic of every lawman who thinks he's ABOVE the law. Because he deserves it, dummy. Does the word "hubris" mean anything to you? Nope, didn't think so.
(Does Mike Corona really need to continue to be your whipping boy?) ** Duuh! Yes!
(Are you personally being threatened?) ** Duuh! Yes! And so are you - because any threat to the integrity of constitutional law is a threat to every individual ... lickspittle pal of Mikey's, or not.
(...how about moving on to more productive reporting.) ** Good idea - how about organized crime? Whoops! Mikey's shown up with those (wise)guys already, hasn't he? How about rampant infidelity in the OC - that's a headline grabber, huh? Uh, oh! Mikey's been there and done THAT, too! Corruption and bribe-taking in office? Oh, dear ...
(... maybe it is time to give some of your scapegoats a rest, they certainly are paying a heavy price now.) ** Extended vacation w/full pay is "a heavy price"? Sheeit, boy, wouldn't mind trying that myself!
(Your [sic) a gutsy guy, don't let that privilidge [sic) go to your head.) ** Having guts is not a privilege, pal. It's a quality - one much sought after.
(Respectfully, Scott) ** Very li'l respect anywhere in your obfuscating, diversionary blather, uh, "Scott."

Can't the Board of Supervisors start a public investigation and issue a subpoena for the tapes? They may not be able to get them from the feds due to the supremacy clause, but they can issue it on Caraona. Moorlach, do something! Shame the bastard if he insists on getting paid as the Sheriff!
December 28, 2007 14:07
And while we're at it, maybe we can get John & Ken to start protesting with their bullhorn in front of Carona's residence in Orange. "Release the tapes! Release the tapes!" Maybe his family and neighbors can shame him into resigning. Well, probably not. But at least his remaining tenure would be more amusing.
December 28, 2007 14:30
What happens on January 7, 2008, the last day of Carona's 60 day leave of absence? Does anyone know?
December 28, 2007 19:18
Countdown,
Basically Mike Carona comes into work for one day. Punches the clock at 8am, and punches it again at 5pm. Goies home and stays there for another 60 day paid leave of absence.
December 29, 2007 01:15
That limp-wrist Carona will never be convicted because cops never get convicted. They always get a slap on the wrist. He will lose his job, yes, but he has stolen so much money that he is set for life. He will get probation, and retire to some offshore tax haven or crawl back under the rock he came from. It is always the same story.
December 29, 2007 07:59
WOW... must be great to be charged with felony public corruption charges, collect full salary, benefits, retirement and get free LEGAL representation from the international law firm, Jones Day.
In Orange County, CRIME does pay off quite well.
December 29, 2007 08:35
J.D. Brox,
Good commentary and dialog,
Unfortunatly, when things get real bad there is a trail of blood, mischief and misfortune.
What can the cops do when the people in the community create false emergencies all the time?
Especially when the judges put their rubber stamp of approval on everything.
Most of the people I've meet went into law enforcement to protect people from the packs of liars and bullies.
It's a rude awakening when we are greeted by them as the show masters.
If you complain about it too much, they find you in the jails...
Also, people who are brave enough to try and deal with big problems unfortunately get big problems stuck on thier laps, until they break, then you guys eat them for lunch.
SO Corona fucked up, and now the wolves are knocking at his door, like this one individual could control all the dirt that comes with the territory.
It doesn't give people the right to bring fear into entire communities.
Scott

Go at him Scott ! I have enjoyed your reporting for a long time. I lived in Orange county long enough to tell you that the O.C is one of the most corrupt places I've ever seen and I've lived and been to some real shitholes. At one time I thought Texas was the worst, then came Alabama.Lo and behold I then came to the O.C. and it was a real revelation. AGAIN SCOTT,KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Putting fear into communities is exactly what indicted Sheriff Carona and his political cronies have contributed to the OC. Anyone who dares to exercise freedoms of speech, press, opinion, or thought, risks facing the attacks of the politically safe abusers in this county.
Those who dare to ask for intelligent answers from law enforcement in OC, both the OC Sheriff's Department and the OC District Attorney, enter a world of hate crimes, public corruption, cover ups, obstructions of justice, legal conflicts of interest and perjury in a court of law, without accountability. Tragically, courageous investigative reporters are the only tool to expose wrongdoing amongst the political, wealthy and wolf-packing individuals leading Orange County's government, law enforcement, religious, education and corporate arenas.
Moxley's ethical reporting is exactly what OC needs to clean up the corrupt public officials that shield themselves behind powerful influences that could care less about due process, equal protection of the law and guaranteed freedoms that have made the U.S. such a great place to live and work. Any County and its leaders who allow an indicted Sheriff and/or any other elected official to remain in authority, despite federal indictments, conflicts of interest and a history of mob-related associates and cronies, have some serious problems. As to the OC Board of Supervisors, they have ENABLED this mess in the County and pretending to act in the interests of justice and safety at regular meetings has been quite entertaining to watch from afar.
The elected officials in the OC are doing a great job with COVERING THEIR ASS!!!! When it comes to the protections of children, adults, employees and families, elected officials in the OC are all about THEMSELVES.... nothing more. SHAME ON ALL OF THEM for playing this disgraceful game of truth or dare with the lives of unsuspecting and trusting individuals and families.

Man, it's just fucken' awesome to see Republicans eat their own (Haidl and Jaramillo going canabalistic on Carona)! What goes up must come down. And soon enough all corrupt, right-wing hypocrytes across the U.S. will come down faster than a closeted congressman's pants. Hey, Carona, are you gonna become a 're-born again' Christian and go on the Paul Crouch Comedy Hour of Power? If so, start working on getting a hair transplant on that shiny dome of yours because all religious wackos need a fucken' gaudy hair-do. And practice playing Soap-On-A-Rope because hopefully someday (wishful thinking) you may become somebody's little bitch but without the badge. Here's to you and your wife and your off-spring getting what you all deserve.
December 30, 2007 16:56
Keep up the good work Moxley.. Most people who have worked there and do work there agree that the dept has been tarnished by this guy. It says a lot that the deputies didn't want him for his first term and this last term didnt want him either. He brought in two guys that had no business working there, and brought with them a lot of political greed. Anyone who thinks otherwise is naive..

It is very hard to understand why Jones Day will be providing pro bono legal services to Sheriff Carona in the federal indictment charges. After a routine www.google.com, I learned that Brian Sun, Esq., from the Jones Day law firm also represents the law firm of Greenberg in the illegal federal wiretapping charges that have been filed against Anthony Pellicano, a private investigator who is sitting in jail as he awaits trial scheduled for February 2008.
The star partner at Greenberg is Bertram Fields who is known to have used Pellicano extensively, several sources have reported. Another lawyer at the Greenberg firm, Ricardo Cestero, who represented actor Tom Cruise -- worked for Pellicano prior to joining the law firm of Greenberg. We can only pray that any potential legal, financial and/or political conflicts of interest are closely watched by California's Attorney General, Jerry Brown. Does anyone have knowledge of indicted OC Sheriff Carona and/or his politically-connected attorneys and law firms using illegal wiretapping to gain litigation tactical advantage? If so, maybe there is an underlying reason why the Jones Day firm has jumped into the Sheriff Carona indictment, PRO BONO.
At least one law firm in the OC, Lynberg & Watkins, a firm representing the County of Orange, the OC District Attorney, the OC Sheriff and other government agencies, has faced a civil lawsuit in federal court for activities related to Anthony Pellicano. Is it possible that the firm of Jones Day is killing TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE.... by offering pro bono services to an indicted Sheriff, while the firm also protects the politically connected attorneys, officials and law firms in Orange County, those working behind the scenes, obstructing justice and violating legal conflicts of interest laws, to gain litigation advantage?
Jones Day is doing exactly what the firm of Sullivan & Ballog does on a regular basis, KILLING TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE... by representing the Diocese of Orange, the County's largest law enforcement agency--OC Sheriff's Department, and various other public school districts and POLITICALLY CONNECTED officials.
Maybe Sullivan & Ballog, Jones Day and Lynberg & Watkins and many other attorneys/law firms are participants in the same self-insured legal malpractice investment fund. This is all opinion of course.... afterall, the only corruption revealed in OC is by tenacious investigative reporters like Moxley. Otherwise, the non-politically connected are left in the dark believing that seeking justice in an Orange County court of law is fair and unobstructed. Nothing is further from the truth.

Scott says:
It doesn't give people the right to bring fear into entire communities.
The ones who bring the greatest fear to "the communities" (ie: anyone who is not white) are the cops.....
when your skin is brown, you are automatically suspected of being a drug abuser/drug dealer/illegal alien/parolee/thief/etc....subject to being detained and treated rudely....
my kids learned early to be worried when a cop was around.....and by their (cops) actions, not because someone told them to...

Moxley,
Some idiot named "Scott" was talking crap on your continued editorial on Carona.
ON BEHALF OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE ORANGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, WE URGE YOU TO CONTINUE WRITING ABOUT THE SHERIFF AND REQUEST YOU CALL FOR HIS RESIGNATION IMMEDIATELY.
We are rallying support of all the mayors of Orange County to call for the Sheriff's resignation. We also recommend a public strike outside the home of Mike Carona urging him to step down immediately. If he does not step down by January 7th, we will be mobilizing a strike.
Keep up your editorial and whoever Scott is, you deserve equal punishment that Carona will be getting.
