Game Over? Carona resigns!

The AP and OC Register report that Sheriff Michael Carona will announce his resignation today in order to better focus on the case against him. We were sitting here pinching ourselves when we wandered over to the OCSD blog and read this statement from Carona. Guess it ain't a dream:

Over the past few weeks it has become clear to me that the interests of the Orange County Sheriff's Department and the residents of Orange County would be best served if I am not distracted from my duties while defending the charges recently brought against me by the federal government. As a consequence, I have worked closely with my staff to assure that my departure from the Orange County Sheriff Department will not materially disrupt its operations or the very capable leadership structure that I have been privileged to work with over the years. Undersheriff Galisky, the Assistant Sheriffs and the more than 4000 members of the Orange County Sheriff's Department have responded to this challenge with the level of deep commitment and excellent service which the residents of this county have come to expect and enjoy.

With a heavy heart, I therefore announce my retirement as Sheriff, effective today. Although this is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made, my family, my staff and my lawyers all believe that this is the right time to take my retirement. This action will permit me to focus on vindicating my name and refuting the false charges which have been made against me and my wife.

I have asked Undersheriff JoAnn Galisky to fulfill my duties of Sheriff until a successor is appointed by the Board of Supervisors following a thoughtful candidate search. Undersheriff Galisky respectfully declined due to personal commitments she must attend to. Therefore, in an effort to restructure management and ensure continuity I have returned JoAnn Galisky to the rank of Assistant Sheriff and I thanked Assistant Sheriff Dan Martini for his years of service and released him from his commitments to the organization.

Finally, I have appointed Assistant Sheriff Jack Anderson appointed Assistant Sheriff Jack Anderson as the second in command and the Chief of Staff.

Assistant Sheriff Anderson has a long and distinguished career in the Orange County Sheriff's Department and is one of our most respected members. I am confident that I leave the Orange County Sheriff's Department knowing that it is in very capable hands.

I wish my successor as Sheriff, and the people of this great county the very best. It has been an honor and privilege to serve. I hope that when my current legal circumstances are behind me, I will have another opportunity to serve our community.

Read the whole thing here. And don't bother clicking that button for audio. . .unless you want the most mechanical voice in the world to read you the message.

P.S. Former sheriff, what about those tapes we asked you to play?

Ok, glorified bailiff becomes sheriff, is abandoned by rich and infamous friends who got him there, serves 30 months for various illegalities, seeks new position ... Mikey, I see Compton dogcatcher in your future! Wuff!

He's resigning to focus on the charges!?!? What a bunch of garbage. He could have taken another 60-day leave of absence and spent every waking hour preparing his defense. And we know it isn't the free legal services controversy, either. Just a few weeks ago, one of his lawyers said it was "pure twaddle" to suggest that legal services fall under the ban on gifts.

Everyone with half a brain knows the real reason... It was that exceptionally persuasive LA Times Op Ed piece by a former Orange County prosecutor that called on him to resign. There is no other plausible explanation.

DB says:

If Carona resigned because he wanted to accept pro bono legal services from the rich and influential Jones Day law firm, based on the fact the gift would be over $350 and he WAS a public servant, then will someone please explain why MICHAEL SCHROEDER, ESQ. has been allowed to provide legal pro bono services to the OC Sheriff and the OC District Attorney for over 8 years and not once has any in a position to take corrective action done so.

Why are SCHROEDERS, ESQ, both male and female, husband and wife, exempt from abuses of power, legal conflicts of interest and termination of employment/legal services? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? Michael Schroeder needs to get his MUG out of the public arena and back to law school to refresh himself on legal conflicts of interest and pro bono legal services.

Good luck to the OC Board of Supervisors.... they have a mess of all messes to clean up and unfortunately, not one mistake can be made based on the fact that public safety and conflict free public officials have been placed at the County's lowest priority in the past.

Isn't sooo much fun to see hypocrisy (a.k.a GOP cannibalism) exposed before your very own eyes? No surprise here since these moral 'crusaders' tend to eat their own. Hey, Orange County voters, aren't you proud of Little Mikey? Remember, you deserve who you vote for....Try and remember that the next time you go to the polls to vote for your compasionate conservative, God-fearing asswipes. Stay away from that Kool-Aid..

Why did it take the Feds, Scott Moxley, and Shirley Grindle, as opposed to our mainstream media (Register, LA Times) and the Orange County District Attorney to uncover this mess?

Scott, congratulations on being the persistent Jack Russel terrier on steroids on Corona's ankle, shedding light on corruption and improprieties coming from government in Orange County. Most people probably don't know that you have taken on this cause at personal risk and cost. Hopefully your readers understand that.

Strange as it may be, why is it that a news publication in Germany has so much interest in OC's infamous now-retired Sheriff Carona who didn't show up at his deposition. See:

Gern Blanston says:

Now if the connection between Carona/Gelbaum/Hoffman could be illuminated. She lives in a house owned by David Gelbaum who donated millions to one of Corona's pet causes.

Why would a very liberal millionaire donate money to a tool of the G.O.P.? More to this story than meets the eye. Kaziikini indeed!

To R. Scott,
I want to congratulate you on a job well done on exposing the sheriff. Even though I live in LA and not the OC I've read your many articles on the sheriff before the other papers decided to write about it. And every time someone mentions Carona I always make sure to point them to the OCWEEKLY and let them know to read your articles. You were the first!

Moxley, we all owe you a GREAT BIG THANK YOU!!

Now when are you going to get rid of Tony K. and finish the cleanup? Is he still "vacationing" on the little island in Newport with notorious Pat DiCarlo? (or did we get amenesia over all of that and the software company that they were running with county employees?)

Thanks again to Sheriff Carona's management abilities and to Susan Schroeder from the OC District Attorney's office, who never fails to make one excuse after another why the DA or the Sheriff finds reasons not to prosecute sexual predators or those failing to report sex crimes or other violations of the law.

THIS COUNTY IS A DISGRACE!

OC says:

Mike will clear his name, since the whole charade is over a promotion that the DA is working for.

Mike will get to be a head of security for a Vegas Casino making 6 figures plus the $200,000.00 retirement he is entitled to while Mox is still working for a free Publications making Peanuts.

I would love to see who gets the last laugh…...

OC DISGUSTED says:

Yes... Carona will be collecting his $200,000 pension and will continue to associate with criminals and RICO-type organizations BUT the OC will be free of the embarassment, humiliation, disgrace and above the law arrogance that have destroyed the careers of dedicated law enforcement officials he has punished for freedoms that are guaranteed in the U.S. but not in the OC. We will someday be safe again because Carona is out forever!!!
Collect the cash Mikey.... enjoy the crime.... and remember that you have done nothing for this County and the sooner your trial is over, the better!!!!

P.S. We are all glad that you continue stating "I know the truth and will be cleared"...... but if there were truths, you would have told them by now. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?????? More grandstanding??? A movie contract???? Another bribe????
