Ordinarily, I keep pretty quiet about personnel matters at the
Weekly. But the economic times we're living in are anything but ordinary. They're extraordinarily shitty, in fact. Which means that, all across the country, in all sorts of businesses (but especially the news business) extraordinarily shitty things are happening to good people.
This week, the grim state of the economy caught up with our newsroom in excruciating fashion. The staff box of next week's print edition of OC Weekly will have some significant changes. Rich Kane, the paper's longtime Music Editor who returned as Managing Editor starting in the summer of 2007, is no longer on staff. Vickie Chang, who has served the paper in a variety of positions before her promotion to Staff Writer this past summer, will move to the part-time Clubs Editor position, replacing Nate Jackson, who is no longer on staff. Amanda Parsons will remain the paper's Editorial Assistant, but the position has changed from full-time to part-time
I've discussed with all of these talented people the possibility of contributing freelance work, so don't be surprised to see their bylines throughout the paper.
Everything else I might say here would probably come off as maudlin or self-pitying, so I'll just shut the fuck up again. Here's hoping for a much, much better New Year.

And throwing that in someone's face makes you a ... bitch. The Register, and the Times, have a 20% profit margin is more important than actually producing a decent newspaper. Greedy corporate trolls will kill the news business--print, broadcast or online.

Yeah, karma comes back to bite you but, believe me, we ain't talking karma here. We are dealing with economic calamity thanks to irresponsible F***corporations like the OC Register (in their case, their irresponsibility comes in the form of useless, mindless so-called journalism supporting all those other fucked up right-wing corps). These self-serving entities deserve what they are getting but, unfortunately, their greedy tentacles drag down decent ones, such as the Weekly. All you right-wing, self-serving, greedy ass-wipes, may you drown in your own economic vomit.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that the paper has become a massive snoozefest.
News Flash: nobody under the age of 40 wants to read 10 pages about the Capistrano School District in the OCWeekly, and nobody wants to do it three or four, or even 11 times in one year either. You must be out of your mind to think some of your stories would appeal to people in your target demographic.
Maybe you should get your sales people to try to sell ads for Depends undergarments, Metamucil or Walker Texas Ranger re-runs in syndication on the TV Land cable network. Get them revenues back up by focusing on what works for you, boring shit for old people.

Fine. Then I am a bitch.
But the OCW seems to forget that there are still a lot of good people at the OCR who are trying to make the best product they have with ever-shrinking resources.
Yes, there are problems at the OCR. But there are problems in the whole industry.
Not that anyone losing a job makes me happy, but maybe now that the OCW has gotten a bitter taste of it they will be a little less inclined to take swipes at the other hardworking journalists in OC.

So why is there a legion of trolls just hanging around OCWeekly for the sake of trolling alone? Buzz off and go back to your Register circle-jerk. Some people do deserve to lose their jobs, the staff at the Weekly does not.

Bernie: I'm down so many pegs, you can call me a stool.
The vitriol a couple of you over on Grand Avenue have toward us is flattering. Our readers know we criticize the bad, praise the good. And the Register has a lot of good—if you read what we wrote in the past year on Navel Gazing alone, you'll find the names of Peter Larsen, Teri Sforza, Doug Irving, Randy Youngman, Courtney Perkes, Steve Greenhut, Steve Fryer, ex-reporter Bill Rams, John Gittelsohn, and others I can't remember praised to varying degrees. And wasn't it in 2007 when we published a story in the paper praising your fire coverage? Karma is, indeed, a bitch.

The Register has made a lot of management decisions in the direction of the paper that has a lot of scratching our heads. That's a fair comment.
Nonetheless, newspapers of all shapes and sizes are important in democracy -- the founders counted on a gutsy free press to keep government honest.
It's sad to see folks lose their jobs and discomforting when it happens in your newsroom.
Sorry, folks at OC Weekly -- and thanks for a least letting us know what's going on. At the Register, folks just .... disappear. (I've always wondered if that's an admission by editors that they hope readers don't read closely enough to notice, or an insult that they don't think we're smart enough to notice.)
Anyhow, good luck folks -- you have done great work and I know that will continue.

Layoffs, resignations, terminations, whatever you call it, it sucks. Times like this when the economy contracts might have some benefits to it but not to the individuals hurt or destroyed.
I hope all the fine and artistic practitioners at the Weekly and the Register who have had to leave land on their feet and find the change was good for them in the long run. I hope the Weekly and the Register find a way to succeed in this new media climate and prosper economically. I hope the Register changes its editorial emphaisis and becomes an independent voice and that the Weekly is able to maintain its independence and creativity. I'll have to read about that in the Weekly if it does because I wouldn't open a Register to save my life as it stands now.

Rich Kane says:
Hey! Heeey! Is this mic on?
I hear myself being called back out for a Reggie-slamming encore…
Like, in today’s rag – what the fuck is up with that story by Jeff Collins, where he yaks pointlessly about all the overpriced homes in Emerald Bay? I mean, seriously – in these times, running an article like this is the equivalent of snuff porn. Love the home page teaser, too: “Where to find Orange County’s luxurious street of gold.” Thing is – and what Collins’ piece never mentions until halfway down – is that nobody can really “find” this ultra-snazzy ‘hood, because all of Emerald Bay is situated behind locked gates to keep the penniless peons out.
Even worse is Collins’ lead, where he attempts to elicit a few drops of sympathy for the poor, poor, rich people in their $35 million compounds:
“Residents of Emerald Bay are getting tired of all the construction in the ‘Gold Zone’ parking area. Flatbed trucks and heavy equipment choke the narrow street running along the development's prime beachfront. Luxury sedans weave between pickups and workers hauling in supplies. Flag men in hard hats direct traffic.”
The horror! Who could ever live in Emerald Bay, what with the sudden influx of burly, hairy, sweaty, asscrack-showing men telling its posh citizenry where to go?
Also, "The Juice," the Reggie’s grand, ridiculous experiment in Web TV, was announced as “going on hiatus” as of December 24. (“Hiatus” is, of course, TV-speak for “never coming back again.”) A note on the Juice tab says they hope to be back in Spring 2009, but, y’know, it’s doubtful. Wonder why? Were host Jennifer Galardi’s breasts just not eye-popping enough to garner the right number of “unique page views”? Whatevs – but they’re inviting loyal Jucie fans to send in their comments to the producers at juice@ocregiter.com. (and yeah, they lost their “s” in that addy -- more Reggie incompetence, please, mooore!)
In case you forgot what the Juice is/was, here's one of my better assaults:
http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/the-regometer/regometer-week-ending-may-3/
Also: is that a real moustache on Gordon Dillow, or is it really just dried-up jizz from all the accumulated oral gratification he’s given to men in uniform over the years? I know, he's not at the Reggie anymore and I don't think he even has his 'stache . . . but why should that stop me?
And hey, Karma, Snax, Bernie, Maddon . . just because I ain’t at the Weekly anymore doesn’t mean I’m dead. Bitches!

"Will the OC Weekly bring back Commie Girl to be the new Managing Editor? "
Paul, I asked Rebecca Schoenkopf (aka "Commie Girl") a somewhat similar question back in '07, specifically, if she would return to do guest write ups for OC Weekly.
Her reply was that she had "peed all over that bridge" i.e., implying that something was done/said that lead to alienation between her & OC Weekly & that she had moved on (I don't know the specifics, because the matter wasn't pursued any further).
I'll admit, I'd love to see her back because I loved her "Diary of a Mad County" & "Commie Girl" write ups.
However, the likelihood of Rebecca's return to the OC Weekly, are about the same as the Chicago Cubs winning the 2009 World Series.
