This Just In: Not All World of Warcraft Players Are Deadbeats

​You there, sitting on the couch in your parent's basement, next to the Doritos, playing World of Warcraft for hours on end. Yes, YOU! What have you done to better mankind lately? More than 200,000 of your kind just donated $1.11 million to charity.

Between Nov. 4 and Dec. 31, 2009, Irvine-based Blizzard Entertainment sold the Pandaren Monk virtual pet for World of Warcraft games for $10 each, donating half the proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which helps make the wishes of sick children come true.

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime on Tuesday handed a $1.11 million check to the charity, meaning 222,000 players bought in.

"I was shocked," Frank Pearce, the game's executive director, told Chuang. "That's a lot of virtual pets."

He added that Blizzard released two other virtual pets around the same time that did not sell nearly as well as the Pandaren.

That, and the comments players left in forums, indicated to Morhaime "that people were really excited about Make-a-Wish and having the proceeds benefit the foundation."

Those do-gooders deserve a round of Doritos.
