UCI Anteaters Bound for Bruinsville to Protest Tuition Hikes

All eyes from the University of California system, and some from outside it, will be on UCLA today and tomorrow. No, not to observe the Bruins licking their wounds from Monday night's embarrassing loss to Cal State Fullerton on the Pauley Pavilion hardwood. It's at UCLA where the UC Board of Regents, the governing body over the 10-campus system, will vote today on whether to implement 32 percent tuition hikes in the face of massive budget shortfalls. On Thursday, the board is scheduled to vote on putting the plan into action.

"This is a historic moment," writes Jesse Cheng, a fourth-year Asian American studies major at UCI and student-regent designate, for the New University campus newspaper. ". . . If the increase passes, UC Irvine students will face the brunt of the public's failure to invest in the University."

She's urging her classmates to join more than 1,000 students planning to descend on the Board of Regents meeting to protest the fee increase. Trips to Westwood are being organized both days by the Associated Students of UCI; email here if you want to participate and vist the ucregentlive.wordpress.com blog for updates.

"I will be there both days, on one side of the velvet rope, sitting at the table with the Board of Regents, speaking for the future of an affordable and quality UC," writes Cheng. "I hope to see you on the other side."

CHS says:

So...Jesse is a fourth-year student at UCI. Not a senior, mind you, but a fourth-year student. Gee whiz, Jesse, if only you had (a) applied yourself and/or (b) not changed your major...you could have graduated in four years and avoided the fee increase. Folks, before you raise the excuse of maybe Jesse had to work to get through school, etc., please be advised that I attended college on an athletic scholarship and was somehow able to not only graduate in four years but also do well enough to be admitted to multiple fine law schools.

Matt Coker says:

I don't know what year you graduated, CHS, but these days it's nearly impossible to get into all the classes one needs to graduate from a state university in four years. At least, that's the excuse my son gave when it took him five years.

CHS says:

Matt, I will concede that it can be tough for a student to get the classes he/she needs to graduate "on time." That is currently very true at the large state university where I teach in North OC. However, I am doing what I can to allow students to take other classes instead of the usual requirements so that they can graduate in May. I guess I just take exception to a person who is described as a "fourth-year" student instead of a senior, junior, etc. That sort of description indicates a lack of focus on actually completing a degree program. P.S. I went to a small private university many years ago.

jgogek says:

Students are aiming their anger at the wrong people. Blame instead the residents and politicians of California who refuse to raise taxes to balance the budget and instead sit by while the greatest higher education system ever (UC, CSU and community colleges) are destroyed. Students should be marching on Sacramento, not on Yudof and the Board of regents. Read more at blog.jimgogek.com
