Arpaio Raises Howls Inside, Heckles Outside Bill Hunt for Sheriff Dinner

Joe Arpaio (left), Barbara Coe and Bill Hunt--together at last. They are shown here at a VIP reception before a fundraiser for Hunt's campaign for Orange County sheriff.

I went to a Bill Hunt for Sheriff fund-raiser tonight, and a Joe Arpaio Dinner Show broke out.

"America's Toughest Sheriff"--so called because he houses jail inmates in tents under an unrelenting sun, issues them pink underwear, chains women prisoners together, enforces federal immigration laws and spends pennies for chow line meals--made the trip from Maricopa County, Arizona, to, appropriately enough, the Phoenix Club in Anaheim to campaign on behalf of the former Orange County sheriff's lieutenant who came closest to defeating his ex-boss Mike Carona at the polls (before Carona finally defeated himself).

As Hunt, who chose retirement over a demotion for daring to run against Carona, put it to his approving audience, "It m

"You're from WHAT paper!?!" Weekly columnist Gustavo Arellano has been unrelenting in his criticism of Arpaio, who has also jailed the Weekly's Arizona-based owners.

ay have cost me my career in the short term, but I'm standing before you tonight and the other guy is heading to jail."

Despite game warm-up acts that included a James Madison impersonator, former Graham County, Arizona, Sheriff Richard Mack (whose claim to fame was overcoming a challenge by the Clinton White House to win a Supreme Court ruling that found parts of the Brady gun control bill unconstitutional) and sign-toting, drum-banging, chant-chanting, anti-Arpaio, pro-immigrant protesters outside, the night's main attraction had 'em rolling in the aisles.

In fact, here are the 18 best lines Arpaio peeled off.

1) "I apologize for the protesters outside. They go wherever I go, If you know a good Mexican restaurant, go and tell them where it is. I know in Phoenix I can't go to a Mexican restaurant. When I walk in, most of the workers run out the back door or spit in my food."

2) "[Hunt] and I come from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are probably the only two Republicans who came from there. We're both out west now. I'm older than he is. When I retire, I'll ride off into the sunset, but I don't ride a horse. I'll use a convertible."

3) "I'm a senior citizen. Sometimes I pick up a lot of votes because of that, especially in Sun City. When I talk in Sun City, I always tell them my age. In Scottsdale, which is snotty, kind of like Orange County, I tell them I'm 45."

4) "When I first ran for sheriff, I made a mistake. I've been married for 53 years. That's not the mistake. I never see my wife. The mistake I made was I said the sheriff should be appointed, not elected. If I had been appointed, I would have been fired 17 years ago. There would be no tents, no underwear, no nothing."

5) [Looking around for Hunt while talking about the candidate] "Where's Bill? Is he trying to get votes outside? I hope he speaks Spanish."

6) "We got Army tents from New Mexico. We made a midnight requisition. We set them up at a waste disposal plant. A half million people have gone through the tents. We only put the convicted people there. The 8,000 innocent people are in jail."

7) "We went to the Supreme Court. I got sued because I took away [inmates'] porno. They sued me, and I won that case. They try to sue me all the time. They can sue my toilet."

8) [After being informed Bill Campbell was the member of the Orange County Board of Supervisors who'd recently visited his tents] "Why isn't he here? I'm here. Your sheriff [Sandra Hutchens] did not come. A captain did. I told the captain, 'Why are you here? Where is the sheriff?' He said, 'I dunno.'"

9) "I'm tough on animal abuse. If you abuse a dog, cat or horse, you are put in pink handcuffs. You go directly to jail. I don't care who it is. We just arrested a 61-year-old lady. She had all these animals. I had a nice jail that was empty and air conditioned because the inmates are in tents. So that's where we put the animals. But I put my foot in my mouth. I said we paid more to feed the dogs than the inmates."

10) "We have 300 dogs. They'll spend 20 years behind bars, then we'll euthanize them. We have a special area for the cats. Someone called it Sheriff Joe's Cathouse."

11) "I'm opposed to house arrest. You get to go have a drink, do porno."

12) "I do get celebrities. My friend [Glen] Campbell did 10 days in jail. I had him do a little concert for me. Mike Tyson had to be isolated a little in the tent. He likes biting ears. Can you imagine the lawsuits if he bit other inmates' ears?"

13) "I spent 25 years in drug enforcement. I'm one of the people who knows what a border is. Most politicians wouldn't know where to find it."

14) "Nine [federal] attorneys came after me, investigated me, because I enforce all of the laws. Sad, very sad. So I kicked them all out. I gave the FBI director pink underwear. They got very quiet."

15) "These guys outside have signs of me with Hitler, Nazis. They brought some of their signs. They hold them in front of my office in Maricopa County. I could pay them to do it every day. I had Al Sharpton come out [to protest]. I raised a lot of money from that. I should have paid for a first-class ticket for him."

16) "I've been sheriff for five terms. . . . I could be governor, but I don't want to be governor. I want to be sheriff. I get more press in one day than the governor does. And, two: I can lock up the governor."

17) "I've stopped human smugglers heading for California. You people should thank me. Why doesn't The Terminator call?"

18) "If they don't like me, don't insult the uniform. That's what they do: insult the uniform. One thing they know is I'm elected, they can't get rid of me. That's why I'm running again. I have a book titled America's Toughest Sheriff. My next one is going to be America's Oldest Sheriff."

Love the photo of Arpaio, Coe and Hunt, the "Mount Rushmore of Hate".

I hope Hutchens gets ahold of the picture and sends it to every Latino voter in Orange County. By posing with those two bigots Hunt is sending a message loud and clear to Latinos as to where he stands.

Mike Hutchens says:

Sean H.Mill hates America plain and simple. But, he loves his 1st Amendment Right to spew forth ignorant blather every chance he gets. Dude, move to Mexico already!!!

There's nothing hateful about supporting the supreme law of the land; our Constitution! Something Mill, who has never served this Country or stood up for it will ever understand.

Instead he's in full support of the small group of ILLEGAL ALIENS who were waving Mexican flags as greeters to the 300 + mostly law-enforcement and military Veterans who came to hear Arpaio and support Hunt (real smart move there, Piasos! "Clowns" in English).

Newsflash to Mill, Arrellano, Pedroza and the rest of their teeny, tiny, shrinking club: Americans of Hispanic decent who came to this country the right way, despise the illegal aliens even more than those American Citizens who were born here! Every demographic poll/study on this topic supports this FACT! Even in Maricopa, AZ where Arpaio is Sheriff, the legal Hispanic population loves him so much that he enjoys over an 85% approval rating from them!

I hope Hutchens takes Mill's advice and advertises loudly where Hunt stands on the issue - it will only serve to boost his numbers on Election Day!

Hey Matt -

Thanks for the inside report. I would have loved to have been in there for this madness.

It's all good though because I was outside with the protesters. Arpaio can talk all the shit he wants on us, but his time is coming up!

Sean H. Mill says:

I love that "Mike Hutchens" played the "you hate America" card. So typical of the hate mongering right wing.

Beware of these folks that wrap themselves up in the flag and portray themselves as better "Americans" than you or I. They usually are the most despicable among us.

As Samuel Johnson warned us, "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

Dan Chmielewski says:

Sean doesn't hate America, but he does hate bigots. And this photo with Coe and Arpaio is bigotry squared. Perhaps Mike can explain the FBI investigation of Arpaio for abusing the power of his office to go after political enemies.

And Sean is right; Sandra Hutchens should use this photo for any negative hit piece. It's simply documentation that Hunt aligns himself with people who believe they are above the law.

Gustavo Arellano says:

Hunt has just sealed his fate with the rational people of Orange County by posing with Coe. Unfortunately, the crazies outnumber the good in this land, just like in Maricopa County. A blog post to come on this soon...

Sean H. Mill says:

Thanks Dan!

You are correct, I do not hate America and folks like "Mike Hutchens" who try and create their own litmus test as to who is a "good American" and who is not are the true danger to this nation.

I do despise bigots like Arpaio and Coe but more than that I have compassion for my fellow man. Many, if not all, of these folks that leave their homeland and come to America are just trying to improve the lives of themselves and their families. We preach the "American Dream" around the world and they get angry when people take us up on it.

"Mike Hutchens" also failed to mention that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has stripped Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio of his authority to arrest suspected illegal immigrants based solely on their immigration status.

Even they realize what a nut job Arpaio is. Hunt will try and emulate this here in Orange County and we really can't afford the lawsuits that will arise from these type of efforts.

Mike Hutchens says:

Mill, Chmielewski and Arellano,

1. Mill, What about the Mexican flag wrapping ILLEGAL ALIENS that protest on OUR soil time and time again like last night? I guess they are "...the most desipicable among us" Again, you have never served this Country or stood up for it. Your looney-left brain will ever understand our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Go try and wave an American Flag in Mexico and protest their government. I dare you, you coward!

2. Chmielewski, Sean and people like him are the ultimate Bigots! Sean hates America plain and simple. He just doesn't have the courage to move somewhere else because he enjoys the Freedoms we have provided for even the ilk of society... For someone who is supposedly "educated" you make some pretty ignorant statements. Go read the Contstitution and the Bill of Rights. Then, read about the Office of County Sheriff and the responsibility that comes with that office.

They are Elected locally for a reason: So that The People are not only protected from local criminal activity; but also protected from any heavy-handed Federal Government attmept to usurp the Rights of the People! Neither your hero, Obama nor the Feds have authority over any County Sheriff when they are upholding our Constituions both State and Federal.

3. Arellano, You have become so self-important and egotistical with your little "Ask a Mexican" flash in the pan fame that you think you speak for the Hispanic Community when in truth, no one appointed you or elected you to said position. In fact, the Americans of Hispanic decent (the ones who can actually vote) in O.C. and elsewhere don't share your sentiments nor support what you say. THEY are the "rational people" you speak of and THEY will vote in droves for Bill Hunt.

Take your sorry-ass La Raza BS South of the Border and start writing about the abuse and suffering that "Your people" have had to endure for decades at the hands of "Your" La Raza government of Mexico. Like Mill, you are a coward and a fraud; so much so you won't even take on the Mexican Government from here for fear of bodily harm. You don't give a damn about "your people," you're just another Poverty Pimp who loves the attention while taking their money..

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 12:04PM
Mike Hutchens says:

Mill,

Your ignorance of the laws of this land and its Constituion truly amazes me oh looney-left brained one!!!

Federal Government "Officials" do not have the Right OR Authority to strip Sheriff Joe Arpaio (or ANY County Sheriff) of his authority to arrest suspected illegal immigrants based solely on their immigration status.

Arpaio will continue to blindly enforce the Constitution; which benefits everyone in his County, and there is not a darn thing the Feds can do about it except harass and bring frivolous law suits which will go nowhere. Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a National Hero.!

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 12:11PM
Sean H. Mill says:

" Mill, What about the Mexican flag wrapping ILLEGAL ALIENS that protest on OUR soil time and time again like last night?"

How exactly is it that you are able to discern the immigration status of those protesting last night? Did you actually see their "papers"?

This statement clearly demonstrates what a bigot you truly are. Just because someone's skin color is brown or perhaps they are able to speak Spanish you jump to the conclusion that they are in this country "illegally".

It is uber-nationalists like you that pose the greatest threat to this country and it is you that is a threat to the Constitution. You don't like when people use the rights given to them to protest against scum like you and your ilk.

Now run and goosestep to the next Hunt function Timmy...err..."Mike Hutchens".

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 12:14PM
Gustavo Arellano says:

Mikey: Gracias for even considering my column a flash in the pan! I wouldn't even give it that much credit. But I do want to correct you on something: if I was truly egotistical, I wouldn't give you the time of day. The fact that I'm engaging with a no-name nitwit like you proves I have no life.

Another lie of yours: you say all "legal Hispanic" citizens hate illegals and support Arpayaso. If that's so--especially in OC--why does an Aztlanista like Loretta Sanchez keep getting voted in again and again, much like your hero Arpayaso? That's right: because you don't know what the hell you're talking about. HAHAHAHA!

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 12:18PM
Mike Hutchens says:

Mill said, "How exactly is it that you are able to discern the immigration status of those protesting last night? Did you actually see their "papers?"

ROFLMAO! Duh, Mill, do they actually issue "papers?" Did YOU actually verify they weren't ILLEGAL?! Regardless, they were waving Mexican flags and chanting in Spanish - which in itself was rather stupid since no one knew what they saying except for the small, imported "La Raza in a Can."

Since they were there in support of ILLEGAL ALIENS, its a reasonable conclusion that some among them were ILLEGAL ALIENS and the others are anti-American for supporting special Rights for Forgeign Nationals who, unlike the people who waited in line and came here the right way, thumb their noses at our laws, our Sovereignty, our culture and then demand to be welcomed with open arms.

Arellano, Where did I "Lie?" Prove it Mr. Journalist! Go do some real research and check out the facts regarding Americans of Hispanic decent real feelings about illegal aliens and their negative impact upon Hispanic Community. Its pretty easy to find plenty of info on the net; just point and click, Einstein.

Sanchez up to this point has been reelected because the Republican Party has had sh** for brains candidates run against her. Everyone of them have been self-appointed nut cases who came out of nowhere and ran without any clue of how to run a campaign. She has never had a well-funded, experienced candidate run agains her. Van Tran should send her to retirment next year. Look who doesn't know what he's talking about now. AAAAAAA HAAA HAAA HAAA
HA HA HA...!!!

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 12:57PM
Gustavo Arellano says:

No,you're the one throwing out all the assertions (85 percent of all Phoenix Latino voters like Arpaio? BULLSHIT). Put up, or shut up.

Let me repeat what you claimed: that legal Latinos hate illegals more so than other people. If that overarching statement is true, none would've voted for Loretta--shit, politicians like Antonio Villaraigosa and most any Latino politician wouldn't get elected (it sure ain't guilty gabachos voting them in). Last I checked, you have to be an American citizen to vote. So tell us, Mikey: how do you reconcile what you say with the truth?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 1:10PM
Sean H. Mill says:

"Did YOU actually verify they weren't ILLEGAL?!"

I thought you were supposed to be innocent until proven guilty in this country. It would be incumbent upon you to prove that they were illegal and not the other way around.

The presumption of innocence is a legal right that we hold dear in this nation. Why do you hate this country and what it stands for you bigot?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 1:15PM
cotysevan says:

Gustavo,
Sanchez was re-elected because she has a hispanic name. The average Hispanic person doesnt even know she's pro-abortion. She doesnt even represent her "people's" thinking. They only vote for her because she's Hispanic.

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 1:33PM
Mike Hutchens says:

Pobre Arellano,

I'm not going to do the work for you, Einstein. It's not BS, YOU look it up!

Regarding Sanchez or VillaMECHA - DUDE!! Sorry to burst your brown-ass bubble but there aren't enough Hispanics in their Districts who can vote that can bring them a majority to win an election. Therefore, it was in fact Whitey who saved the day for both of them. C'mon, get off the "medical maryjane" and truly think about your statement, THEN actually go do some voter research and post your results before you spew forth your race-baiting baloney. It would really help you in the credibility column (nod, nod, wink, wink)

Mill, Put down the bong and step s-l-o-w-l-y away...

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 1:38PM
Gustavo Arellano says:

In other words, Mikey: No facts to back up your claims? Thought so! 85 percent--HAHAHAHAHA!

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 1:42PM
Sean H. Mill says:

"Mill, Put down the bong and step s-l-o-w-l-y away..."

So you can't explain why you hate our country and what it stands for. The presumption of innocence is at the core of our legal system but you prefer to throw it in the garbage.

Perhaps it is you that should move the hell out of America and go to someplace where you are presumed guilty from the outset. Perhaps China should be in your future.

Why do you hate our freedom?

Howard be my name says:

Hey, where's the reader who was telling me yesterday that "Hunt has not necessarily espoused a position on illegal immigration?"

Hunt may have had plausible deniability when he was just hanging out with Arpaio. But when he poses with Arpaio AND Coe, denying is no longer plausible.

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 3:44PM
Fact Check says:

I'm right here Howard my friend. I will answer your question with a question: If I'm standing next to two illegal aliens, am I an illegal alien? According to that Mill guy the answer would be no. A friend of mine went there and said Hunt was giving interveiws to the hispanic TV stations. He also said that the "protesters" were brought in by bus from LA and Maricopa but they couldn't hang with the big dawgs and left before the event was over. I suppose my friend is a racist for going there. Hey Gustavo. Did you go out to protest with your brothers or is that something beneath you?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 4:26PM
Mike Hutchens says:

Fact Check,

Great points all! But, you can count on Arellano and Mill not to let something like facts get in the way of thier knee-jerk reactions to anything not "La Raza" (Brown KKK).

Mill has a serioius guilt complex for being born white that he's been dealing with for years and he's never served a day in defense of America; never sweated; bleed; sacraficed; doesn't even know what the Constitution says nor has any understanding of the role of government per our Constitution...

As I mentioned earlier, Arellano is nothing put a Poverty Pimp which means of course he WAS NOT at the protest; he only knows how to use poor, uneducated people from his country; not actually help them in any way. If he did, they wouldn't pay him to "help" them anymore...Why would he come out in the cool damp air for hours with ILLEGAL ALIENS and get laughed at and ridiculed when he can stay home, sip tequila and watch Novellas or listen to Los Tigres del Norte or reread the Mecha manifesto? Que chistoso!!!

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 5:25PM
Gustavo Arellano says:

Fact Check: Ya better tell your friend to do like your name and check his facts. Most of the protesters there were from la naranja. I wasn't there since I had my own event to attend (I have other beats besides illegals, you know), but that doesn't mean anything—you can look up all my reports over the years at Know Nothing protests and gatherings (my favorite was the Minuteman fundraiser at a Costa Mesa park for Allan Menso) if you want proof of my love for such spectacles. Ask Babs about the time Judicial Watch subpoenaed me for photos that ended up fucking up their case against the city of Anaheim on behalf of her!

Mikey: Me, a poverty pimp? Under what proof? Where's the 85 percent?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 6:24PM
Fact Check says:

Gustavo. I did. Here's what he emailed me:

Protest Nov 5th “America’s Toughest, Racist Sheriff” Joe Arpaio in Orange County
NDLON will have vans ready so that we all can car pool.
Van will be leaving the UCLA Downtown Labor Center by 3:30pm 675 S. Park View

If your planning on carpooling please confirm with NDLON so that they know how
many vans they need to get.

He said it was off Facebook. What's NDLON? You mean there is something more important than the infamous Sheriff Joe Arpaio?

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 7:14PM
gabriel san roman says:

Fact Check: You are an idiot. Sure companeros from NDLON were there and traveled together. But the OC based El Centro Cultural de Mexico and the Colectivo Tonantzin provided for many of the activists at the event.

As for Arellano's attendance. Puh-lease! I've protested with the guy on cold ass sidewalks in front of the Garden Grove Women's club when there was only a handful of young activists and kpfk hippies on hand to join in on the fun.

So he had a talk the same night. Big Deal. Now go and try to find a VALID point.

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 7:28PM
Fact Check says:

Maybe Gabriel. But the talk up by Gustavo leading up Sheriff Arpayaso's visit led me to believe he would be there. If he wasn't I would assume he was a coconut but I will look up his articles as he suggested.

Posted On: Friday, Nov. 6 2009 @ 9:33PM
Howard be my name says:

"If I'm standing next to two illegal aliens, am I an illegal alien?"

"Standing with" is not the same as participating in a photo op. You may have stood at a street corner with racists as you both waited for the "Walk" signal. That would not make you a racist. But posing with her and another racist means you are either really stupid or like-minded.

And the average voter understands this perfectly well, as you'll see in November 2010.

Posted On: Saturday, Nov. 7 2009 @ 6:22AM

Howard. Orange County is alledgedly full of republican racists as Gustavo will tell you. Disseminating that picture will only help Hunt's cause. The republican's out number the democrats more than 2 to 1

If you have some hard questions to ask Bill, why don't you come on down to Schneiderman Lecture Hall at UCI on January 28th from 5 to 8 pm and ask him those questions yourself. He will be speaking for about 25 minutes and then opening the floor for one and all. He is one of many public office candidates from various political parties which will be speaking that night. I haven't decided yet about him, the only thing that I know for sure is that we are all in the fight of our lives to save our nation from despots and tyrants and we need to stop fighting each other and work together to support those candidates who will help to heal our broken nation, end this imperialist foreign policy and return our personal freedoms.

BTW, i totally agree with you about Arpaio. that man is a flat out psycho and drunk to death on power. i have written him numerous times to inform him that in my eyes he is a Nazi. One of the worst ones I can think of is the young MOTHER who was forced to give birth to her youngest child in hand cuffs.

O_o what a monster!

I may agree with some of the policies that he is enforcing, but I one hundred percent disagree with his inhumane record and wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole unless it was to slap him.

Larry Breazeale, Msgt.(ret.) USAF,Security Forces says:

On behalf of the thousands of veterans, their families and friends nationwide, of the NATIONAL VETERANS COALITION, the veterans arm of the Constitution party, "WE" support the candidacy of Orange County Sheriff candidate BILL HUNT.
BILL HUNT is a true "constitutionally-minded" candidate, just like "AMERICA'S TOUGHEST SHERIFF" Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
America needs MORE Sheriff Joe Arpaio's, all across America. Bill Hunt is what we need in Orange County.
The NVC(CP) sponsored a Support Rally & March for Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Oct. 27-2008 on the steps of the State Capital in Phoneix. VETERANS & supporters came all the way from outside neighboring states. Go to www.nvets.org and click on "NVC IN THE NEWS". God Bless Sheriff Joe Arpaio and BILL HUNT. The NVC urges voters to VOTE BILL HUNT. -Larry Breazeale, Msgt.(ret.) USAF, Deputy Sheriff retired
