Banning Divorce Picks Up Steam. Seriously

As proponents of same-sex marriage in California argue amongst themselves whether to pursue a Prop 8 nullification initiative in 2010 or 2012, a "concerned Christian and political activist" is aiming for the earlier date for his measure to ban divorce in the Golden State.

John Marcotte lasr fall launched RescueMarriage.org because he "felt strongly that Prop 8 did not go far enough in protecting traditional marriage."

Before you ask, yes, Marcotte's tongue was firmly planted in his cheek.

But the joke's on all Californians now.

The first clue Marcotte began RescueMarriage.org on a lark? The site identifies him as follows:

John Marcotte is a firm believer in traditional family values. He currently opposes government-funded death panels, Obama talking to children and MSNBC's entire prime-time line-up.

All that was missing was, "He subscribes to the Orange County Register."

Clue No. 2: Among the rotating photo teasers at the top of RescueMarriage.org is one showing MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and a headline announcing Marcotte had been proclaimed one of the host's "World's Best Persons."

Now that California Secretary of State Debra Bowen has allowed Marcotte to begin circulating petitions aimed at getting the 700,000 signatures required to place an initiative banning divorce on the state ballot, so-called "traditional marriage" backers are stymied. Do they only support the "sanctity of marriage" when it means excluding loving same-sex couples, or should "'til death do us part" apply to all marrieds?

(Secret note between Clockwork and Tiger Woods: Dude, you gotta move back to Cali, establish legal residence and contribute to this measure.)

Hmmm, wonder who might be pissed off enough over Prop 8 to sign Marcotte's petitions?

On RescueMarriage.org, you can donate, become a fan of the initative on Facebook, buy a t-shirt, view their PSA or just leave a comment like these recent contributions:

"I don't live in California, but you have my support. Great way to make a point about the hypocrisy of prop 8."

"Where do I send my money? I hope the Catholic Church, the Mormon Church, and all other evangelicas support this initiative/proposition."

"It needs to be taken seriously to seriously get on the ballot. Let's see those divorce-riddled hypocrites who voted against prop 8 vote in favor of this one."

"Wish I lived in CA! Joke or not, it's brilliant!"

Among those damning the proposed law outlawing divorce was a Ken Lowery, who wrote, "This is immature. Is this some 6th grader's idea?"

"So was Prop 8," replied DD.
