Doctors, Viewers Defend Mom Feeding Autistic Son Pot Brownies

A Fountain Valley mother told Good Morning America this week that marijuana saved her 10-year-old autistic son's life.

"At first I did some research, and I found a doctor who actually had a protocol for medical marijuana in children diagnosed with autism," says Mieko Hester-Perez.

She turned to feeding cannabis-loaded brownies to her son Joey Perez when his weight had become dangerously low due to his unwillingness to eat.

"You could see the bones in his chest," she said of the boy, who only weighed 46 pounds. "He was going to die."

The mom told the national morning news program that she herself has never used pot, but she is convinced, "The marijuana balanced my son. My son had self-injurious behaviors. He was extremely aggressive, he would run out of our house . . . he was a danger to himself and others."

Of the 122 comments to the online version of the GMA story as this post was being banged out, most applauded the mother's choice. Another mother even indicated she will look into medical marijuana for her autistic child.

Yeah, because stuffing a bunch of chemicals into your kid is better than feeding them a plant. Do you ever think for yourself?

Steve Elliott ~alapoet~ says:

An increasingly large amount of anecdotal evidence indicates that marijuana is very in treating autism.

And within the past year, medical studies have shown the same thing.

If parents choose to treat their autistic children, under a doctor's recommendation, with the herbal remedy medical marijuana, then that's their own damn business.

Judgmental ninnies should butt the hell out, especially those acting all superior because they give their kids the harsh chemicals brought to you by the profit-seeking pharmaceutical corporations and approved by their bought-and-paid-for politicians in the government.

Herbs are a lot easier on children than are chemicals. And in many cases, such as autism and ADHD, they are way more effective.

I feel for your son, Cecilia. Ahh, good 'ol Risperdal, that'll give your son the shakes eventually. Yes, you may not be a doctor, but you are a mother and your sons health should be just as much your responsibility as it is your doctors.

Hokulani says:

Cecilia, so you are saying that Pharmaceutical companies have our best interests at heart as opposed to the CREATOR of this planet and all of its living things? It must be real dark up there where you have your head stuck.
Maybe you are not aware of the over 25,000 uses of hemp otherwise known as cannabis. What if God came to you and said, "Guess what, my child, I created this plant for medicine, food, fuel, rope, paper, building materials, clothing, and yes, I created it for your pleasure as well." What would you say to GOD? Would you tell him to go eff-off, your happy with what MAN is creating? Well, thankfully we are blessed to live in a free country and you can do what you think is best. Another thing, Cecilia, The Chinese with their over 5000 year old civilization know cannabis as Tai Ma. You'll never guess what that means. It means "THE GREAT MOTHER". Now, Cecilia, put that thought in your empty brain and think about it for at least a minute if you can stand it.

Aldous says:

Folks, wouldn't it be better if instead of calling each other names, we all recognize that each has the child's best interests in mind, and talk as equals, rather than to condescend. I believe that the herbal approach is very promising, and that the law is the only thing standing in the way of greater use. Law is man-made, plants are created by powers beyond man, and are gifts. However, I empathize with those like Cecilia who want to believe that the pharmaceutical companies have a better answer, because it "seems" safer, and obviously it's legal. Cecilia, I do think it would be useful for you to consider that only man-made laws stand in the way of the use of a God-given and entirely natural approach for your child.

There comes a time in every parent of an autistic child where, what can i do? Is my kid going to get better? Where are the answers? Its like Mother (on some HBO special i think) who changed her son's diet...Glutton free. A few months later, her son showed vast improvements.

The thing is, autism, NOBODY KNOWS!

I totally agree with her, every day the medical community comes up with a different name for every little twitch or cough.that way they can sell you on a different type of medicine that will ultimitly put more money in their pockets.Since cannibus is not exclusivly a phamacutical product to which they can profit they will continue to disavow it's positive contribution.

Rick says:

I love the GOD arguments used to defend marijuana. Opiates are also handed down by GOD, as is the venom in a snake bite, as is nicotine and a host of toxic and deadly lil things concocted by GOD so that you can feed your kids because its NATURAL.

Well, I am an advocate of legalizing marijuana but tired, hippy-religious arguments do not use the most sound logic.

Julie says:

Cecelia, have you EVER looked at the side effects of Risperdal. I'd much rather feed my child pot, thanks. And having a sometimes-out-of-control, autistic 58-pound, 4-foot tall little boy, I can completely empathize with this mother who feeds he kid these brownies.

Here's those side effects of this drug:
Anxiety; constipation; cough; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; fatigue; headache; increased appetite; increased saliva production; lightheadedness; nausea; restlessness; runny nose; stomach pain or upset; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weight gain. Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal thoughts; confusion; decreased sexual ability; drooling; enlarged breasts; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; inability to control urination; increased sweating; missed menstrual period; new or worsening mental or mood changes (eg, aggression, agitation, severe anxiety); nipple discharge; prolonged painful erection; seizures; severe dizziness; stiff or rigid muscles; suicidal thoughts or attempts; symptoms of high blood sugar (eg, increased thirst, hunger, or urination; unusual weakness); tremor; trouble concentrating, speaking, or swallowing; trouble sitting still; trouble walking or standing; uncontrolled muscle movements (eg, arm or leg movements, twitching of the face or tongue, jerking or twisting); unusual bruising; vision changes.

Yeah, sounds like something I'd want to give my child.

Legalize it says:

I agree herbs vs. chemicals created by the pharma machine for profit only are better for the treatment of many things.

There is a connection between early use of pharmaceuticals and drug abuse later in life. The idea you can just take a magic pill and it all goes away.

The Pharma lobbyist don't want pot legalized because it cuts into profits.

Congradulations CECELIA ON POISONING YOUR CHILD AND RUINING THE LIVER AND KIDNEYS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO KEEP FUNCTIONING WELL FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE! I suffered from sever migraines with blackouts and siezures associated with them. The medications my Dr and mother allowed me to be on made me stay sick and hurt my immune system so bad that i was sick for over 2 years.I would get sinus, ear, and throat infections so bad that i would go on an antibiotic,a couple of painkillers,Couphsyrup,Lydochaine and other things all on top all the meds i was taking for migraines. The migraine meds messed with my blood pressure and made me black out more often and i wasnt able to drive.I finally got a second opinion and found a Dr who removed my tonsils and adnoid. My migraines were almost nonexistant after surgery. When they started to flare up again i refused convention medecine because i amconvinced it was only making me worse.I changed my diet and did extensive research on the use of Medical marijauna.I found that the side effects are much less harmful to me then the prescriptions i was on that caused a lot of damage to my hearing, liver kidneys and imune system.Ive also worked with many children and adults with disabilities and find marijauna to be a much better altornative that shows results. Please do some research on both marijauna and prescriptions your child is on and decide what you would rather put into your poor diffensless childs body.Do you want to continue to poison or give him a good healthy natural altornative?

Michelle says:

Cecilia, your comment sounds childish and very brainwashed. Hello, you actually think a combination of chemicals with tons of side effects are better than (legal, medicinal) a plant? People like you scare me. Try thinking a bit.

Cole Taylor says:

| Thank God I don't have sick children, but if I did, I would stop at nothing to give him relief. I would much rather give my son natural, non-toxic weed than give him speed (which is what my middle son was given when having difficulty with 5th grade). I pray for peace for all those suffering. May you find relief, somehow.

Be Better People says:

Medicine and Science are two different things. We should focus on the news here- Something different worked.

Anyone work or play with autistic children? We should all be happy something worked, even just once for short time. There is not a cure for Autism, only remedies and chemicals. Both with side effects.

Don't over complicate it.

love God and love people, people.

Coley says:

I think a few weed brownies to level out a autistic child is a HELL of alot better than stuffing a variety of medications (probably after several attempts with med's as well.) Who knows whats actually in some of those drugs!
Changes are most people with autisim have it because of drugs in the first place! such as flu shots, or a mother taking certain meds when pregnant!!!

I think weed is a GREAT alternative if it works.

If you believe in god, then you should believe theres a reason he/she put ALL plants on this planet for a REASON!!!

Once heard a corroner say on TV that cannavis can cause color-blidness several days later after use and in fact many road accidents are attributed to drugs use (some goes to several medicines - many advise not to drive or control equipment)
