Lae Thongphun, 27, was detained after Garden Grove police officers and paramedics had arrived shortly before 11 p.m. to a residence in the 8500 block of Emerson Circle to assist a child who was not breathing.
There they discovered a boy, Fox Chau Le, with his face covered in blood. He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
The two-year-old and another sibling had been left in Thongphun's care, according to police, who took the other child into protective custody following the arrest.
No charges have been filed against the children's mother, but the investigation continues.
