Disneyland Urged to Bring Back Michael Jackson's Captain EO

By Matt Coker, Friday, Jun. 26 2009 @ 2:46PM

Categories: Breaking News, Disney Dirt

On various Internet sites, including the "Captain EO @ Disneyland" Facebook page, Disneyland is being urged to bring back the Captain EO attraction to honor Michael Jackson.

Captain EO, which debuted at Disneyland on Sept. 18, 1986 (six days after its world premiere at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida), and ran continuously through April of 1997, was the 17-minute film you see YouTubed in two parts above.

Other sites where people are calling for EO's return to Disneyland include YouTube, Examiner.com and MovieLine.com.

Because of its revolutionary 3-D effects, Disneyland guests enjoyed the Star Warsesque flick projected in a tricked-out theater that sat 500 people per screening. It's perfectly acceptable to make the Star Wars reference (sorry, geeks) because the flick was executive produced by George Lucas. But Lucas did not want to direct it, so he called his pal Steven Spielberg. But Spielberg was busy, so Francis Ford Coppola got the gig.

eo_poster.jpg

That might have been fortuitous, in a reverse-fortuitous way, because Coppola already had a rep for blowing his budgets (The Godfather; The Godfather, Part II; Apocalypse Now). EO would up costing about $30 million to make, which makes it both the most expensive 17-minute film ever made and most expensive music video ever, since that's what it really is. It showcased two songs, "We Are Here to Change the World" and "Another Part of Me."

As someone who formerly manned the microphone on the back of Disneyland trams, I'm all about the employee spiel. See if you remember this one ...

"Get ready to experience the singing, dancing, and song-writing talents of Michael Jackson, in a spectacular, 70-millimeter, 3-D space adventure. You might have to wait a while. There's only one theater, and it only has around 500 seats. The show lasts 17 minutes, and it takes several minutes to reload the audience between the shows. It's worth the wait if you're a Michael Jackson fan... or if you're a special effects fan. There are 150 special effects on the film, and a bunch of in-theater effects too. Pick up your 3-D glasses as you enter the Magic Eye Theater, but please don't put them on until you're seated."

After the doors open:

"Please move all the way to the end of a row and take a seat. You may put on your 3-D glasses now. If you wear eyeglasses, don't worry; the 3-D glasses fit right over them. If you don't like really loud music and noises, this also might be a good time to put some cotton in your ears. Sit back and watch Captain EO and this faithful, if unusual, crew--Hooter, Fuzzball, the Geex, Major Domo, and Minor Domo--as they prepare to land their little spaceship on an oppressed planet.

"Where's landing beacon? Don't trip any alarms . . . Oops. The crew tripped the alarm. Oh no! There's an enemy patrol ship. Still no landing beacon? How about a map? Hooter ate the map?"

[LOUD CRASH!]

The story was cooked up by Lucas, Coppola and producer Rusty Lemorande. Up on the screen you'd first see Capt. EO (Jackson) and his ragtag spaceship crew (puppets and costumed characters) embarking on a mission to deliver a gift to the Supreme Leader (Anjelica Huston, filling the usual wicked Disney queen shoes) on her jacked-up planet. Upon arrival, the crew is captured and sentenced to torture. But as EO is being carted away, he tells SL he sees the beauty hidden within her, and that he can unlock it with the song he has brought her, "We Are Here To Change The World."

Deep.

Then robots change into different stuff, Evil Queen snaps out of her spell and goes ballistic and a bunch of other stuff that you can see in the above videos happens.

Hurry, the show is about to start.

The preceding post was based more on information from a variety of sources than my foggy memory. The same can be said of the following EO trivia:

*The Captain EO attraction replaced Magic Journeys in Tomorrowland's Imagination pavilion.

*To celebrate the premiere at Disneyland, the park remained open for 36 hours continually and attendees received a souvenier t-shirt.

*External effects inside Magic Eye Theater included lasers shot over audience members' heads and smoke and stars in the ceiling and walls.

*The late, great Dick Shawn--whose 2nd Funniest Man in America live stage show in LA was one of the funny things I ever saw--played Captain EO's commander, who only appears in shakey, holographic form at the beginning of the film.

*Honey, I Shrunk the Audience began screening in the same theater in 1994, but it did not replace EO's exterior facade at Disneyland until the good captain split in '97.

*At one time, besides Anaheim and Florida, Captain EO was showing at Disney parks in Japan and France. It hung out the longest at CinéMagique, presented by Kodak, in Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris, where it departed on Aug. 17, 1998.

*"Another Part of Me" wound up on Jackson's Bad album (1987).

*"We Are Here to Change the World" did not make it to a Jackson album until 2004, as part of Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection. R&B singer Deniece Williams covered it 16 years earlier on her As Good As It Gets album.

*Captain EO has yet to be released onto DVD or any format, something that may have to do with Jacksons' legal issues.

*The "Captain EO @ Disneyland" Facebook page has 435 friends.

Chris Pickett says:

One of the main reason that the 3D movies used in park attractions re not going to DVD and BluRay is that they require highly specialized equipment that current consumer video products are not capable of handling.(or anywhere near close).

To re-release Captain Eo would require going back to the masters and redoing the movie for a 2D/flat release. Not saying that they can't make it look good, but it's just not straight forward simple.

It's not just technology.

Should Disney wish to bring back Captain Eo for an honorary run, it wouldn't take a whole lot of effort to reconfigure the gear to play the older presentation since the technology is mainly the same.

Convert it to the new Disney digital 3D format. Show it before "UP" already in theaters. That way you reach the largest possible audience with the best technology. Also this would bring in people to see Up a second time and bring in people to see Up who were "on the fence".

Chris Pickett says:

It would appear Up is using polarized "glasses", which is the same concept audience-based technology used by "Captain Eo", "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience", "Mickey's Philharmagic" and "It's Tough To Be a Bug".

This format, should "Up" be using the exact same technology as in the theme parks, is very expensive to operate and maintain as well as being extremely past the capability of current consumer playback technology(your home theater stuff ain't gonna get anywhere near it).

I haven't seen Up in theaters since I'm generally not a fan of theaters and their crappy sound(THX: SUCKS and is based on an artificial performance curve, as opposed to natural, me and my RTA can do better!).

It would be interesting to see how Disney chooses to go about the release of "Up" to the consumer marketplace around Thanksgiving or Christmas this year. Chances are, they'll have to go with the Red/Blue glasses because the polarized lense solution requires two projectors and a super high frame rate. Can't be done on a tube, plasma or LCD.

If Disney brings back Captain Eo even for a short amount of time, it would certainly annoy those who cannot make it to the parks to see it. My suggestion, assuming Captain Eo and Up are technologically a match, would be to offer "select viewings" for Up that also lead in with Captain Eo. Not all showings, but a weekend matinee Saturday and Sunday, an afternoon and an evening showing every day.

Forget petitioning Disney. Disney' ain't into listening to us anymore. VMK; need I say more?

I'm certainly not opposed to bringing Captain Eo back as a tribute or "ongoing memorial" for Michael Jackson. I enjoyed it a long time ago and wouldn't mind seeing it a few more times myself. Maybe they'll be running it through the end of September since I'm planning a trip during September to Disneyland. But if you're going to bring it back, I can't see why it shouldn't return to the other parks as well? He had a global base of fans.

Let's face it, Disney made up their minds on this years ago when the first allegations were made against the man. Hopefully the Mouse can forgive as easily as the fans can.

Nelson says:

I think he's overrated. He was an egomaniac. Most of his best years were as a member of the Jackson 5, in my opinion. A lot of his so-called "great music" was unimportant.

But the media knows what gets the ratings: CNN's ratings were up over 990% on the day he died. LOL.

He tried to make himself as odd as possible so that the media would pay attention to him, and then "complained" that the media wouldn't leave him alone. I guess it made him feel like a star to complain that the media wouldn't leave him alone. LOL.

He contributed to the downfall of MTV. His music made MTV better, but then they felt they had to let on other African-American music that was low-quality, which made the station worse.

Literally sleeping with other people's children in your bed IS a form of sex, no matter what Michael Jackson said.

Joseph says:

Nelson, you're a moron; an imbecile. You have the mental capacity of a 12 year old. Michael Jackson is "overrated?" "He contributed to the downfall of MTV" Are you an idiot? MTV's ratings soared after the premier of "Thriller!" Where were you on December 2, 1983? Not only did Michael Jackson open doors for the "low-quality" African-Americans you speak of (sarcasm), but also paved the way for Caucasian boy-bands such as New Kids On the Block, Backstreet Boys, and 'Nsync. And, all members of those bands were highly influenced by him! And yes, Michael Jackson indulges in the extreme use of plastic surgery which may appear recognizably "odd," but most entertainers in the industry indulge in the same procedure.. look at Joan Rivers!

Michael Jackson is a humanitarian. He gave his 1.5 million dollar settlement from Pepsi Cola to Brotman Medical Center where he had been treated, allowing the hospital to acquire the best available technology for treating severe burns. Also, millions of dollars were donated from the single "We Are the World" to famine relief, and to aid the poor in Africa and the United States. He also donated 500,000 dollars to the United Negro College Fund, and all of the profits from his single "Man in the Mirror" went to charity. Michael Jackson founded the "Heal the World Foundation" The foundation sent millions of dollars around the globe to help children threatened by war and disease.. and you call this man "overrated?" Nelson, did you happen to vote for Senator John McCain (that was random)? Just curious.. LMAO!

Anyways, despite the false allegation of pedophilia.. Michael Jackson is legendary; an iconic figure! He had a notable impact on music and culture throughout the world. Please Orange County, wipe the dust off "Captain EO" and bring it back to Disneyland!

I agree, bring Captain EO back to Disneyland, regardless of his death, although that would be a nice homage, but Captain EO is wayyyy better than that lousy Honey I shrunk the kids thing. They need to bring Captain EO back, keep it there, bring America Sings and the People Movers back as well. Beef up Tomorrowland with good stuff, those attractions really made Tomorrowland exciting, now it's sooo boring.

It's sad to see some of the negative comments in here about Jackson from people who have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of the facts...it's like a shark with blood in the water.

Most people may never know the truth about the allegations of child abuse in his past, but we're supposed to be a nation of laws and principles. One of these is the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

It's easy to sit behind the keyboard in total anonymity and drone on about supposed "facts", but most rational people will see that for what it is- a big mouth coupled with a self-serving righteous fervor and no tact.

Bottom line, this guy was my generation's Elvis. I saw Captain EO when I was 14- me and my friends went back and watched it like 3 more times that day. The videos on YouTube are cool for showing my kids what it was like for their old man back in the day, but there's nothing like seeing the show live in 3-D.

Disneyland, bring it back.

Well said Pinkgirly; Spokker is a miserable jerk, who obvioiusly loves to believe the worst in people. I believe Michael Jackson was a kind soul with an amazing gift that all of us who grew up in the 80's were so fortunate to have witnessed first hand. He was the soundtrack to our lives, and I believe Heaven is that much more beautiful since he arrived there. I guess the Angels got so excited watching The King of Pop rehearse for his comeback tour that they all wanted front row seats for themselves. I love Captain EO, and my husband has never seen it, and I know he would love it too. Please Disneyland!! Do the right thing, and the intro should include a 10 minute profound apology to Michael and his fans for ever having pulled it in the first place!!

YES, please bring it back. I would go to Disneyland just to see this again, a wonderful memory from my childhood- I remember being SO stoked when it first came out. A new generation has witnessed the passing of a musical career that has stretched from the 70's to NOW.... I think that is more than enough reason. MJ had his issues like we all do, whatever they were, but scandal & media crap aside, if you remember his amazing contributions to music and video, you can't deny his dedication to his career!

Michael Jackson gave SO much to Disney and even MORE to the world. He truly changed the face of music, tv, videos, paved the way for African American entertainers who came after him. The man was a genius, a gentle, lonely soul! Can you imagine what he went through in life, to never be able to walk across the street without getting mobbed! ALL his LIFE!
I stand by this thought- WE LOVED MICHAEL JACKSON TO DEATH.
Disney, please bring Captain EO back as a PERMANENT installation to the parks in Florida and California! It is a timeless piece, and the world NEEDS to be uplifted, especially in these hard times. It was one of the BEST attractions Disney EVER HAD!!!! We Love you, Michael. Long Live the KING!

captain Eo is no mere entertainment, it has a very strong message, that character is very much like Michael himself, he has no hatred, he doesn't kill the bad guys but make them good
captain Eo should be brought back to all disney parks in the world forever
Michael probably loved the people movers and the carousel of progress and the tiki room in its original form, they should be brought back too,and the great EPCOT pavillions in the future world
the disney channel showed captain Eo (but not 3D°) it's great, I watch it all the time but it can't replace the experience in the park with other fans

Captain EO should definitely be brought to Disneyland at the very least!
To those who say the cost would be too much, and would out weigh the benefit to the park, you are completely underthinking things. Not only would this be a fabulous idea, and probably most inexpensive as Disney probably still has all necessary (also old and probably now relatively inexpensive) equipment for the refurb., but it would bring countless fans looking to pay tribute, and feel the nostalgia. Which is a huge part of what Disneyland is about. It's almost a "no-brainer" to bring back this film to the Magic Eye Theatre! I have to say it would get me rushing back to DLand!
Also, can we please knock it off with making the man a villan, and the obvious racist baggage that a couple folks have brought to this board. Please, you're making us feel like we don't live in America, where you're innocent until PROVEN guilty.
Michael Jackson was most likely the victim. Victim of greedy people trying to cash in at the 'freak's' expense. Some of you have a short memory of how it went down.
Keep your hate to yourself!
Disney, please consider bringing back Captain EO for the next generation and the long time fans who appreciated MJ, and will never forget!
Long live the King!

Disneyland would not only attract even more people from all over the world to come and experince the amazing Captain EO, but they would make such great business! It will make the top of the news and will keep fans, people waiting in line for hours for days to come.

Just look at the boost of his music sales after his death. It's a phenomenom. It has an affect on all people of knowing that he was so much more than a true artist, a visioniary, a soul who just wanted to give so much to the world and did it anyway he can!

DEFINITELY DEFINITELY PLEASE BRING BACK CAPTAIN EO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember the first time I saw it when I was about 11 years old. OMG, even my mother wants it back. We're hoping Disney will bring it back, even if it means to capitalize on his death which is horrible but hey, as long as they bring him back on the 3D screen, Im sure many would be happy! :D

when Michael started to make it known that he was a disney fan, hugging the characters, having fun in the parks, quoting peter pan, I thought to myself "Michael, now you're doomed, now SOME people will call you a weirdo (I know, I have the same experience, I live in the country I won't name where people don't know one bit about disney and go "my daughter loved disney when she was little, now that she's four, thanks God she's into dora instead...)
Michael was never ashamed of his opinions and interests and he made tons of disney fans feel less lonely
Come on, you disney people, you owe Michael (and all of us) that much, please bring back Captain Eo, there's nothing Not to love in it

I remember seeing Captain EO at Disneyland, Paris when I was 9 years old. I'd been a fan of Michael for a few months, and I was also really into space and fantasy, so I was amazed... And it's still one of my favorites to this day.

I have so many memories of this film! because of captain eo, I started to love him. in 1992 at disneyland paris. before we went to disney, I had never heard of michael jackson. and yes, also we(my parents and I) went 3 times a day to this movie. this is once of the films who stay lovely to look at and always makes me cry because I hunger to the 3d experience in disney again and always thinks of it. when Michael comes close to the supreme leader and makes a wonderfull woman of her,at this point michael became another part of me! please watch my video it contains an ode to michael. I sing gone too soon all by myself, and it also includes some scenes of captain eo. so disneyland paris, please bring the captain back! he belongs to disney as well as to us michael fans!

Please bring Captain EO back to EPCOT Center at Disney World. The "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" movie is old and tired...a remasterd EO will introduce a wonderful part of my childhood (and millions of others') to the next generation.

nelson and politico-poppa: you two are brainless, self absorbed, redneck white men.
Disney should bring back Captain EO in honor of Michael. Gen X would absoluetly love seeing EO again at the Disney parks; Gen Y would also love to see it as well, because when it was out, most of Gen Y doesn't remeber seeing it at all. I, myself, am 16 years old, and i LOVE EO. I first saw it on YouTube and fell in love with it. Michael was a normal human being, like me and you. He wasn't "odd". He was scared and lonely. The media and y'all haters made Michael feel even more lonely and scared. YOU treated him like he was a dog; YOU treated him like he didn't have any feelings at all. Michael was a very loving, caring, and kind person if you didn't notice. He HELPED more people than you probably would in 10 years.
Anyways, Captain EO should be bought back to Disneyland so all his fans [[NO HATERS!]] can show their love for him.

I really hope that they do bring back Cap EO back to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. I've noticed that there are no candles or flowers stationed at the Honey I Shrunk the Audience show In memory of Michael because Cap EO used to be there. I don't see a memorial site anywhere around the Disneyland Resort for him. well anyways I hope that our Mikey gets to come back and be Space Mountain's neighbor (which is my #1 ride and a hard core fan of course). Imagine Space Mountain and Michael Jackson side by side again like old times.I hope they bring back a disney pin for the attraction soon also. I am running low on patience for the Cap EO pin to come back to Disneyland again to complete my pin trading collection. Come back Mikey pleeeeease!

I join countless others in hoping Captain EO returns to Tomorrowland at Disneyland. It was one of the best shows there and I was sad when it was removed. Honey I Shrunk The Kids is old and outdated and needs to be removed at this point. It has been there long enough. I think returning Captain EO would be a most appropriate remembrance for the late Michael Jackson.

Christina Armstrong says:

I agree with all the above. I remember seeing it as a kid in Disneyland. I was very unhappy when they got rid of it and Honey I Shrunk the Kids is so out-dated! Captain EO has a wonderful message and I think that all the negativity surrounding MJ's scandals have gone by the wayside. He was a fantastic artist and humanatarian. Bring Captain EO back please!!!!
