Clinton Joseph 'C.J.' Hubbard's Family Disputes His Death Was Accidental

Remember the death of Clinton Joseph 'C.J.' Hubbard, the Corona del Mar 27-year-old who was dropped by one punch outside a Newport Beach nightclub early Thanksgiving morning and later died in the hospital?

Clockwork first reported the incident here.

The real estate broker had just left Code Restaurant/Lounge, 4221 Striker Way, Newport Beach, around 1:40 a.m. Nov. 26 when he was confronted in the parking lot by a man who, for some reason, punched Hubbard in the face.

The force of the blow apparently caused an artery in Hubbard's brain to burst, and he was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. There, Hubbard was declared brain dead and his family pulled him off life support the next day so his organs could be transplanted.

The Orange County coroner has ruled the death accidental, but the family of the UCLA and Santa Margarita Catholic High School graduate reportedly is not buying it.

The coroner ruled Hubbard succumbed to a traumatic brain hemorrhage--bleeding around the brain following head trauma--and that the injury was accidental, resulting from the fall, reports the Orange County Register.

A witness told police his friend was punched once in the face and fell to the asphalt after intervening in a couple's argument in the Code parking lot.

According to our initial report, Newport Beach police launched a search for the puncher, explaining he may not have even known Hubbard died.

Now police say they have heard from another witness who said no couple was arguing, Hubbard was not punched and he simply collapsed outside Code.

Jessica Johnson, Hubbard's sister, said the family disputes the ruling that her brother's death was accidental.

"He didn't pass out," she told the Register, noting that his blood alcohol level was 0.14. "You don't pass out as a .14," she said.
