Tough Decision for Angels: Lackey or Figgy?

Take a picture of Lackey, it will last longer.

The Angels have a tough decision to make: Do they try to keep pitching ace John Lackey or spark plug Chone Figgins?

Owner Arte Moreno has said he wants to keep the payroll the same as it was this past season. With Lackey and Figgy headed for the free-agent market this winter--and neither obviously interested in a salary freeze next season (as the owners like to remind players, it is a business)--that means there is no room on the roster for both.

It's a very tough call. Based on their respective performances in the playoffs, Lackey gets the nod. Based on day-in and day-out contributions (in so many ways) during the regular season, Figgins is clearly nails.

Figgins is safe . . . for now.

Guess that means you'd have to look at whose absence would cause the least amount of disruption to the current squad. The Halos have other good arms, some would even contend Lackey is not the ace (or that no one is).

But it is Figgins, who can play any position and was anchored to third base last season, has prospect Brandon Woods breathing down his neck.

There is also this option: With Moreno having essentially written off former franchise player Vlad Guerrero, split the savings from that high salary between Lackey and Figgins and hope it's enough to keep both in Anaheim.

Ah, but Arte is hot to spend that on Jason Bay. And if the Angels lose the Bay sweepstakes and keep Lackey and Figgins with hefty raises, there's the little matter of replacing Vlady without raising the payroll.

Tough, tough decision.

Dan Chmielewski says:

Lackey -- consistently delivers come the playoffs. Best arm in the free agent market. Pitching wins championships.

BrunoHockalugie says:

I agree, keep Lackey. He is number three on the Angels all time win list (only four Halo pitchers have ever had 100+ victories) and is potentially a future Angels team Hall of Famer. And who could forget Game 7 in 2002? It would be nice to keep Figgins, he is one of my favorite players, but Lackey is the man and the one we need to keep.

Gavin says:

If it comes down to the two of them, it's Lackey, no question. But I really don't see why Vladimir even needs to be replaced; Bay would just confuse the outfield issue even further, and the Angels have enough power at various positions, and from both sides of the plate that it may make good sense to play DH by committee.

Art Pedroza says:

You guys are nuts! They should both be allowed to leave.

Lackey has a ton of wear on that arm. Pitchers don't get better with age. They break down.

Figgy is a pretty good defensive third baseman but he still lacks pop and the Angels have other players who can steal and get on base. He is not worth a huge payday.

I say let them go, keep developing young players and sign free agents who come cheap. Look at the mileage the Dodgers got out of Randy Wolf last year. For cheap!

The Angels have a good core. Blowing their was on aging players is a stupid idea...

Art Pedroza says:

And I would NOT sign Jason Bay. Not a great defender. As he ages, which happens fast with players like him, he will be a liability in the field - just like Vlad.

Art - you don't know anything about baseball either.

art pedroza says:

Dan,

I bet you wanted to keep F-Rod too.

The Angels should trade for Adrian Gonzalez rather than blow 100 mil on Lackey.

BTW, I have won ESPN fantasy baseball leagues the past 3 years.
