In connection with the "Line Drives and Lipstick" exhibit at the City of Fullerton Museum, Saturday's "We Played Baseball" luncheon features a discussion by Jean Ardell, author of Breaking Into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime, and a chance to mingle with 1940s All American Professional Girls Baseball League players Shirley Burkovick of the Rockford Peaches and Maybelle Blair of the Peoria Redwings.

Stephen C. Smith, who runs the FutureAngels.com website and has been popping up on this blog lately to comment on Odd Man Out, Matt McCarthy's controversial new tell-all book about the Angels' minor league system, will be videotaping the luncheon for his friend Ardell. Her husband, Dan Ardell, was an original "future Angel" in 1961 and played with the parent club for seven games in September 1961. "Her book is one of the best baseball works I've ever read," say Smith, "and unlike a certain other recently published work this one is thoroughly researched and documented!"

The public is invited but pre-registration is required at (714) 738-6545 as space is limited. The luncheon runs from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, and the $12 tickets ($8 for museum members) includes lunch and admission to the exhibit.
