UCI Graduate Student Workers Striking Tomorrow
Heads up, Anteaters. You might not have discussion tomorrow because your discussion leader might be on strike. UAW 2865, the union that represents UC TAs, readers, and graders, will be striking Thursday, April 3 over what they claim are unfair labor practices.
"From threats to international student's visa status who participate in union activity, to unlawful videoing, and calling legal strikes illegal, the UCs are taking every opportunity to try and intimidate its members," reads a statement released by the union.
The unfair actions in question are a string of incidences that have taken place across the UC system over the past several months.
Last November, UCLA administrators told international students that striking could lead to the loss of their work labors, according to UAW. At UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz, UC police officers allegedly filmed striking workers.
Finally, at UCSC, a writing program director allegedly told his employees that "they would not work again in his department if they participated" in an upcoming strike.
No incidences at UC Irvine were specifically mentioned by the union.
UAW 2865 will host tables at the flagpoles for all day with information and picket locations. A rally is planned for noon, with marches scheduled before and afterwards.
