Santa Ana's Bristol Street Easter Cruise Over?

easter-bunny-drives.jpg

As a former cruise passenger on E Street in San Bernardino--because I didn't have a car and there was absolutely nothing else to do in San Berdoo--I find it disturbing that no one's invited me to the Bristol Street cruises in Santa Ana each Easter night.

Indeed, I knew nothing of this local tradition until reading El Jefe's post about it last year ... after the fact:

It's Easter Weekend, Which Means Santa Ana's Bristol Street Becomes Ground Zero for Lowrider Cruising

Now comes an advisory from the Santa Ana Police Department informing the citizenry that they'll be cracking down on the Easter cruise. Great, now I'll never be able to take part. And right after I got my Ford Ranger up to hopping an amazing half an inch off the ground.

"This unsanctioned activity produces public safety concerns, numerous calls for service and gridlock," explain the cops in justifying lane and road closures beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday. Traffic on Bristol between First Street and Warner Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction, as will Main Street between First and Anahurst Place. Edinger Avenue will be completely closed between Bristol and Main.

The lane and road closures will continue through 3 a.m. Monday.

Bah humbug!

Esmerlda, I completely agree with you! by the way Damien Trinkkeller, you are so ignorant. not all people that drive lowriders or any custom cars that have been restored are gang bangers! you idiot and biased racist! talk to all the Anglos that have restored cars in Garden Grove on Main Street. I bet you you would be okay with that. by the way, Hispanics also restore dragsters not just lowriders. I've seen plenty of Anglos driving lowriders especially impalas so there you go!

I love downtown AND Bristol btw. However, hipsters doing awesome? Awesome job alright. Getting young girls killed. Yep. Ps. To the one who lives near south coast plaza.... Cruising there? Boring. Cars would never go that far! Cops should get to work on real crimes....

Riding around in your car on a busy street that is under construction is so stupid. Boy, that sure is a tradition to be proud of. Not.

if it can be proven to be anything other than constitutionally protected free speech and the driver are following all normal laws. Muni codes frequently are passed that are not congruent with the overall law of our land, the US Constitution! Helloooo!

Um...but it is a violation of municipal code and punishable by a misdemeanor.

Good... I'm glad.... so obnoxious... I used to live on Bristol by south coast plaza.. What does a low rider parade with gang bangers have to do with Easter anyways?

write your local congress/senate to withdraw federal aid funds to santa ana/others that you feel are infrindging upon your 1st ammendment constitutional right to peacfully gather, even if it's while driving/riding a car. :) As long as nobody is violating the vehicle code or local ordinances etc the authorities cannot legally impede any kind of lawful and reasonable use of public space including roadways. If you feel their motivation is racially charged because a particular culture has it as a tradition then it would make a good basis for a class action suit agaisnt Sants Ana/SAPD etc

I thought this shit died a couple of years ago. I live a block off Bristol and the past Easter nights have been quiet as hell.

Perfect! Another waste of taxpayers dollars. The cops have to do something to justify their increased numbers, their military hardware, their expensive cars...

Let them cruise I live around the grid and it gets real annoying that I can't get home because cops won't let me make a turn into my street. Also the side streets get flooded with cruisers which makes more traffic for everyone else

Ok so SA police are concerned about "gridlock" , so tell me how shutting down Bristol and Main streets to 1 lane in each direction and blocking off Edinger is going to fix this? its all fun and games till the cops show up

"Bah humbug" -- I think you've got your holiday seasons mixed up.  No one says "bah humbug" at Easter......

Wouldn't be easier to put police at key intersections to "serve and protect" versus closing streets and lanes?
