British historian Simon Schama made his third visit to The Colbert Report earlier this month to plug his new book dropping April 1 and accompanying PBS program that begins airing locally tonight and are both titled The Story of the Jews.

Or, if you play your Rosh Hashana Cards right, you can wait until April 6 to, as Schama tells Stephen Colbert, subject yourself to a five-hour "Jew-a-thon."

For the piecemeal approach to the five-hour series, which follows Schama from Russia and the Ukraine to Egypt, Israel and Spain to explore the imprint Jewish culture has made on the world, parts 1 and 2 are shown tonight starting at 8 on Costa Mesa-based PBS SoCaL. Parts 3-5 follow on Tuesday, April 1, also beginning at 8 p.m.

As Schama reveals in the Colbert interview (sorry for the commercial!), all five parts are shown April 6.

Local support for The Story of the Jews is provided by the Harry & Belle Krupnick Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles, according to PBS SoCaL.

I thought this program was very interesting in learning and understanding about the history of the Jewish people.  I'm looking forward to parts 3-5 (I'm not Jewish)

Should be required watching for UCI's MSU before they select their next jew-hating, anti-israel, pro-hamas rally speaker.

@JGlanton

You sound like one of those foolish, short-sighted people who thinks that anyone who is critical of Israel as a political entity hates all the Jews. WRONG!!!

@fishwithoutbicycle LOL. No, I'm talking about UC Irvine's MSU inviting speakers who say that they want to drive the Jews in to the sea. Extermination of a people, THAT's hatred. Guys like Malik Ali who support Hezbo and Hamas, who call for the destruction of Israel and the goal of turning it into an islamic state.

@downtownbrown

Quite frankly, I'm much more worried about Christian extremists trying to turn THIS country into a CHRISTIAN THEOCRACY...speaking of zealots. Pot meet kettle.

@fishwithoutbicycl\ A few readings of their holy book should set you straight about zealotry and its central position in traditional islam.

@JGlanton

I detest Muslim extremists...but I feel that way about religious zealots in general. And it seems a lot of people want to assume ALL Muslims share their views. That's just not true.
