Robert "Lil Clumsy" Moreno Jr. Identified As Shooter of Anaheim Police Dog; Dog in Serious Condition: UPDATE

See the bottom of the post for the latest updates

ORIGINAL POST, MARCH 20 5:30 P.M.
: Anaheim police shot and killed a man today at the 1100 block of Mayfair Avenue near the intersection of La Palma Avenue and Citron Street. It's the first fatal killing by the department since back-to-back shootings in July 2012 set off riots in the city that made national news.

Details are slim at the moment, but the Weekly was the first media on the scene. At the time, a non-fatal shooting took place when a gunman opened fire on Orange County Probation Officers conducting searches.

"[They] were working in a county marked white car when they contacted three individuals on the street," Anaheim Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Tim Schmidt tells the Weekly. "Two suspects took off running. One suspect pulled a handgun out, shot multiple rounds, missed them and ran away."

The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Lodge Street near Mayfair Avenue. Children walking out of nearby Horace Mann Elementary school were on lockdown. Anaheim police arrived to search for the suspects. As a K-9 unit drove into the area, a standard warning sounded from the helicopter hovering above that a K-9 dog was going to be released. Police cleared residents off to the side of La Palma and Mayfair Avenue.

Around 3:15 p.m., a sudden volley of gunshots that sounded like firecrackers being set off in a trashcan were heard. Residents took off running in both directions. After 20 months of relative quiet, Anaheim police shot a man dead. "During the search of the original suspect in the original shooting, officers found him," Lt. Schmidt told the Weekly. "The suspect shot the K-9, also shot at the officers and the officers returned fire."

An ambulance left the area, but without its sirens on. The reason was clear.

"He has not been transported," Lt. Schmidt said of the downed suspect. "I can confirm that he's dead on the scene."

"Officers and witnesses to both shootings have been transported back to Anaheim Police Department for interviews," he added. The name and age of the dead man hasn't been released. The Weekly will keep tabs on developments as they come.

Investigators with the Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA) arrived on scene as is customary in all officer-involved shootings.

FIRST UPDATE, MARCH 20, 7:45 P.M.: Here's some video from the scene:

The unnamed man killed today by Anaheim police wasn't transported to a hospital right away, but the K-9 he shot twice was. The Orange County Register's writeup dedicates an entire three paragraphs to Bruno the German Shepherd. Readers learned that the dog is a six-year veteran trained for SWAT duties, the first K-9 injured by gun fire in recent memory, is undergoing emergency surgery and that he's the color of "sable."

Any actual news on the dead suspect, or his crime at hand? The Reg didn't care, nor did the Anaheim PD bother to disclose any details.

The doggie down predictably aroused the Register's troglodytic readers, since the paper didn't put the story behind its fabled paywall. "If he shot my dog i would of put 10 rounds in him," writes one pendejo, in the most liked comment so far. "The only tragedy here is the cop dog getting injured. All else is good," chimed another.

Oh, Register readers, how we miss you...not.

Bruno is going to have to retire. It's tough for a dog that's used to a life of constant action. I hope he settles in OK and finds an outlet for his drive.

Little klunky was trying to shoot the cops from his trashcan fort when Bruno jumped in front.

Bruno, the police dog who made international news this week, “took a bullet that was meant for one of us” when he signaled that an armed gang member was hiding in a trashcan, his handler said Tuesday.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that either me or somebody else would’ve gotten hurt,” said Anaheim Police Officer R.J. Young, 36, Bruno’s partner. “Bruno did exactly what he’s trained to do.”

The gang member opened fire on Thursday afternoon, hitting Bruno in the face. Returning fire, officers killed the suspect.

Still praying that Bruno isn't suffering too much after being brutally shot in the face and chest by the hiding coward occ klutzy. I doubt he'll ever work again, though.

"We could see more of 'Bruno' in his eyes today," writes Officer Brett Klevos. Bruno took a short walk and ate his first meal on his own today. He also received blood from his APD K-9 colleague, Ares. Click the link to see a short clip of his recovery progress.

Oh gawd, that shrine. You know that you've lived a worthless life when your "shrine" is a couple of beer cans in an alley. Empty cans for an empty life. I'm sure it's the highest honor from his gangster boys, some serious shit. To the rest of humanity, trash in an alley is a fitting metaphor.

Meanwhile, any more info proving or disproving the story tossed out by the Anaheim PD within nanoseconds of the recent execution of a Latino man in Mickey's "happiest place on earth"???????

So you cub reporters are reporting on the comments left in another (actual) news paper?  Good god why not just expand the rub and tug and MMJ ads to fill the whole thing out?  Or maybe run some more photos of Kelly Thomas' face?. Ju know that's a winner!

Bruno continues to improve day by day. There is no sign of infection so far and he continues to rest and heal. Doctors have started to introduce a nutrient-rich slurry to give Bruno's digestive system something to do since he's been fed via IV since the surgery.

Beware of false charities asking for money on behalf of Bruno and the Anaheim Police Department. If you'd like to give, please visit Friends of the Anaheim Police K9 Association for information on how to do so to be sure your money is going where you've intended. Thanks again for the overwhelming support.

Clumsy goon or wtf he was called.  One less kid that should have been aborted on the streets of Anaheim.

I'm so glad to hear that officer Bruno is sitting up today and I hope that he can take his being fed through a tube. His chest is staying sealed and there is no air leakage. Poor guy has a cast holding his jaw together and is probably uncomfortable but he's heading in the right direction towards recovery.

I had many battles with the Citron gang while living in Anaheim. Anaheim communities have many people with a "no snitch" attitude and this attitude is directly responsible for killing their own kids.

I kept complaining to my apartment manager and I went to corporate after I realized the staff were gang members as well. Security was even high fiving with them at night. Anaheim PD started to work with me and they did their job after they realized I was serious. The first time I called police they didn't show up for 1 hour because they were at the scene of another crime which I understood but I was scared. My kids (3, 6, and 10) and and I sat alone in the apartment while 7 punk kids stood outside and one had a gun in the front of his pants in front of my bedroom on my front steps.

The last straw was when my 2 year old brought me a sharp butcher knife. I admit that cop was shocked at how irate I was because this is normal but it started just before the riots and that when I saw PD rise up against the gangs. They were literally tackling them in my front yard. I didn't renew my lease and moved to south OC. So you see I moved but Anaheim PD are doing their job because I recently returned to see a very clean looking neighborhood. Bye Anaheim. Clear out the garbage I might come back.

Tips for living in Anaheim whether you rent or own:

1. Watch your front yard where Citron gang members like to stockpile bricks and rocks to use as weapons. Halloween 2012 they were literally stock piling rocks in the streets.

2. Check your bushes and yards and walls. When I lived there I cleared mine every single morning of knives, baseball bats, drugs (mainly weed and pills), butcher knives, and stolen items such as cameras and jewelry.

The joys of Anaheim!

Couple things here: First, it's just a damn dog. Sorry dog lovers but it is only an animal and we kill thousands (of animals) every day just for lunch. People seem to take exception to dogs for some reason. Second, don't shoot at law enforcement. Whether it was a good shooting or not, cops will return fire. It's not a matter of right or wrong at this point but rather cause and effect.

@DonkeyHotay  Typical know-nothing chump.  Cops sent in the dog to save OCC Dopey's life. It's the non-lethal option. In a rare case it doesn't work out, like with OCC Sneezy who shot his non-lethal option, leaving only the lethal option. Unless you think that the sheriffs should have taken on OCC Clutzy's gun with a bean bag. Instead, the OCC have an opening for a seventh dwarf. NO IQ test required.

That's good to hear that the K9 is going to survive. Not let's find out the truth regarding who shot the dog. Knowing the Anaheim PD as well as I do, it's preferable to have third party confirmation of exactly what transpired. And I don't mean from Tony Rackauckas.

Gabriel/Gustavo/R. Scott/Matt: Make note of what JJGal just said about apartment management and apartment security personnel in the big OC - especially in Anaheim.

She doesn't know this but she just exposed another Orange County, CA police harassment scam.

Anaheim PD should have it's own reality show - 1001 ways to destroy a residents life. The sequal to 1001 Dalmations (starring Bruno).

Ortiz: Your statement shows how intelligent you really are. JUST A DOG? It's probably the same one that would save your dumb ass if he and you needed him too. Or are you just another un-educated punk who thinks he can rule the world? Make a note to yourself, you earn more respect of people when you speak with intelligence, and you will have a better chance of being somebody other than a nobody! I wish you the best!

@18usc241  Oh, I know all about cops unnecessarily shooting people's dogs in their back yards because all the dog is doing is barking to defend his territory. Way too many cops are ignorant when it comes to reading canine behavior, and you always get some who are just plain scared of dogs. Hell, I've met K-9 handlers that are pretty ignorant about dog behavior. They're focus is on human criminal behavior.

If I ran a PD, I'd circulate them all through cross-training sessions with the K-9 teams. Have them wear padded suits, get bit, get a feel for how dogs behave under stress. Get a feel for how to disarm a dog's defense drive mentally. And for their own safety, learn to read the signs of the truly rare dangerous dog that could hurt them badly. Probably the one that is not barking or growling.

What I do disagree with is your stupid inference that the cops shot their own dog. In the face. From the front. You have to really hate cops to float that theory. Ha ha, it's damn hard to even get a dog to turn around when he's near a suspect. You can make him stop and hold, but he won't take his eye off the suspect or the hiding place for even a second.

"Rambling run on paragraphs"

If you want to read SAT worthy literature I would refer you to Tony Rackauckas' diatribes chock full of fancy SAT words. Wait let me save you the trouble: every cop/deputy is justified in their execution and any eyewitness testimony that contradicts the police version is downplayed or completely ignored.

When you are an embedded systems hardware/software developer, you don't need to toss out words no one understands in order to impress. Having attended the same private Manhattan school as Supreme Court Justice Scalia, this latino fellow could - I just don't need to.
