Road For Disneyland-Area Pimp Of Minor Girls Wasn't Easy For LA Rapper Curtis Canady

CurtisCanadyMugPimp.jpg
Canady: I didn't know selling children for sex was wrong
The path 19-year-old Curtis Maurice Canady took to land face to face this week with a no-nonsense federal judge in Orange County for pimping minor girls in prostitution near Disneyland isn't pretty or fair.

Canady grew up in an exceptionally poor, crime-infested section of Los Angeles. His mother gave birth to him at the age of 14. When he was a toddler, his father--a convicted murderer serving a life sentence in Pelican Bay State Prison since 2001--dropped out of his life. Electricity and food wasn't always available at home. His stepfather was a physically abusive drunk murdered in a bloody 2008 drive-by shooting covered by the Los Angeles Times. His family allowed an illegal sex ring to operate out of their home during part of his childhood. When he walked to and from elementary school, he passed groups of prostitutes working the streets and nobody thought to coach him on ethics or morals, a failure that later blinded him to legal consequences of selling underage girls for sex to anonymous men. He began smoking marijuana daily when he reached puberty, quit high school before graduating and colored himself in tattoos, including inking a Gucci symbol on his face. While a minor he started dating an older prostitute and worked as her driver. He picked "Cash" as a nickname because he naively thought it was flattering.

On the brighter side, Canady loved skateboarding, sports and recording rap music. He posted a couple of his lively performances on the Internet and played in small Southern California venues. He also won the sincere love of his family and friends, 13 of whom drove to the Ronald Reagan Federal Courthouse in Santa Ana to show support during his sentencing hearing.

Last summer police detectives caught Canady working as a pimp selling minor girls and transporting them between Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Anaheim. His warped, off-kilter support group responded to his arrest with intense outrage, alternatively claiming he was framed by a well-respected Anaheim Police Department vice squad, blaming Orange County white racism and, incredibly, maintaining the notion there is nothing wrong about pimping girls not old enough to obtain a driver's license or legally see an "R-rated" movie. After initially pleading not guilty, Canady had a change of heart. He confessed and wrote a letter to U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter.

"I understand that what I did was wrong and I should have been smarter," he explained to Carter in neat, handwritten penmanship and perfect grammar (especially for a high school dropout). "I only wish to move forward and get something positive out of life . . . Although people may look at me and my appearance and make assumptions, I am truly not a bad kid. This has really been a life lesson learned and I will never make a mistake like this again."

He claims one of his biggest worries now is that his mother will lose her government welfare and housing subsidies.

As evidence of his asserted regret, Canady did something I've never seen an adult defendant do in decades covering court cases. In 51, single-spaced pages, he dutifully wrote over and over again--5,015 times to be precise: "I will not aid prostitution." His taxpayer-funded defense lawyers thought the exercise reflected both school kid-type immaturity but also genuine sincerity. They shared the pages with Carter not because the pimp asked them too, but because they thought the information would give the judge valuable insight.

canadyiwillnot.jpg
Note to self: Canady wrote, "I will not aid prostitution" more than 5,000 times as a reminder of the moral guidance he never received from his parents and relatives
But post-arrest wishes and twisted rationales couldn't alter the strength of veteran Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Brown's case. Brown requested that Canady serve 97 months in prison as the appropriate punishment and Carter, one of California's most thoughtful judges, agreed. When he re-emerges back into society around 2020, this defendant will be forced to undergo formal supervised probation for an additional decade.

This case--like all the other recent Disneyland-area cases involving trafficking of minors--raises an alarming question: Who nowadays doesn't understand it is repugnant and illegal to sell children for sex?

Tick, tock.

Sadly, that's the approaching sound of similar, future pimping cases in our county.

Where were you at, Moxley? Everyone was looking for you.

Soooo, you write a humanitarian piece on an accused pimp of underage girls... using his background, and environment to tug at heart strings of readers. When many people in OC come from the same type of background (hey south county, it does happen) and don't become pimps. I came from a similar story, and like I often tell relatives or peers that happened to fall into gangs or drugs; the library was open to all of us.

Bottom line: how is this dude's sob story news?

Eugene W Fields

Sad. This kid became a product of his environment. Save for a single mother who worked 2 jobs and made sure I stayed away from drugs, gangs and lowlifes, this could have been me.

You guys are really stupid. His mother tried her best to raise her kids. You stupid people like to blame her for decisions he made. Their were prophets in the bible who had kids and did things that were wrong and these prophets were ordained by GOD and raised their children according to the law.Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.(Mathew 7:5). Most of you will not understand this because you are a bunch of heathens.  His mother always tried to stay positive for her kids and do the best for them despite all the tragedy that has happened in their lives. This woman has been through so much in her life and I am positive that if you guys went through it you would not be able to make it. You are dummies for passing judgment on her. She did the best she could for being 14 years old. she was a child raising a child you fuckers. I cant even say anymore because I will just get angrier. . .

@thatacekidd  Soooo, "thatacekid," you claim from your brave perch in anonymity to believe journalists covering courts should keep from the public information about a man who sold children for sex near Disneyland? Really? Unless you are a moron, a pimp, a relative of this criminal or in the second grade, I don't believe your comment is sincere. PS--Curtis Canady isn't, as you wrote, "an accused pimp." He's a confessed and convicted pimp of little girls. And now he's heading to prison for 97 months.

I've held you up on this before R Scott, covering nothing stories like these when there are important issues to write about. Here's a lead: What did Lady Gaga eat for breakfast? Now THERE's an important question! Then you wouldn't be getting those insightful, analytical questions from facepalmkiddddd and his ilk.

@rscottmoxley @thatacekiddYou say below that "of course his sentencing is news, but that's where it should stop, right?" I disagree.  If all the Weekly did was report straight facts I wouldn't really care to click on the article.  With any case I like the details and backstory if it applies.  They would lose a lot of readers and comments if it were just straight fact reporting.

Brave perch of anonymity? We have the same profile picture haha

If your reply sounds like we're on the same page, then why is the first half of this article about his back story? Who cares if he was poor growing up, does that excuse actions? There's no point for it. That's what I was enphasizing. Of course his sentencing is news, but that's where it should stop, right?

@949girl @ladybug1977 I really do not care how you took my comment, The lady you are attacking is my sister. I know the type of parent she is and yes she is a good mother and yes she did the best she could. She had a baby at 14 and she raised that child by herself, without any help from anyone. Our mother was murdered before she was 16 and still she was able to do it on her own. She still worked and went to school. She did not beat her kids because of the abuse she went through. She talked to her kids and try to raise them differently from the way she was raised. My sister is not on welfare and she did not have a sex ring coming in and out of her house. She never let her children go without food. Yes I do quote the bible because I am a religious person. She loves her kids very much and yes she is going to take a stand for them. If she could she would of moved out of the area that she lived in but unfortunately she could not afford it. Next time get the facts straight before you tell a story about someone. What you should of did was ask her instead of hiding like a little girl at court.

@rscottmoxley          Claim to not know? No, I really don`t know how much it cost to sell females, period. And it was a joke. Lighten up, Moxley. You`re a "writer" so I know you have a sense of humor.

@toliveanddieinLA Now, you claim not to know about pimping kids, but seven days ago you acted like you know about the cost of buying a middle school girl for sex. Here was your line: "oh no, that isn`t enough, honey! Gotta come with more than that if you want one of these girls."

toliveanddieinLA

@rscottmoxley      never sold middle school aged girls so I wouldn't know how it`s going. And fyi, those girls are in high school. Thought you knew. @toliveanddieinLA  Ok, I was kidding about the $25. You and Curtis sell middle school girls for 29 bucks a night, right? That would explain your present, ultra-impressive living conditions in South Central LA.

MORE ON THIS STORY LATER!!!!!!!! Now, 28 minutes of talking about the Lakers Guard!".

Barking from anonymity? Are you kidding me? I read your article, and took from it what was written in black and white. Not quite sure where I was trolling? Isn't that the point of the comments section? To read the article and comment one's thoughts on it, without being attacked by the writer of the article? Hahaha c'mon Moxley, I've read many of your works for the last few years and I am a fan, but I didn't know you were so sensitive to a reader seeking clarification on one of your articles. I didn't know I had to know your entire process of research before encountering an article to understand it? How does that make any sense? Any casual reader would have opened the weekly and pulled the same tone from it that I did. No basement or closet here brotha.

rscottmoxley
rscottmoxley topcommenter

@thatacekidd  Okay, "thatacekid," perhaps there has been a misunderstanding. My report was obviously not an excuse for Mr. Canady or his crimes. In fact, I fought a sealing request by the pimp to hide who he is and I won. My article was designed to inform the public about the type of person who would think it's okay to sell girls for sex near Disneyland. Victory! Also, it's ironic that Canady's associates have spent months ignorantly attacking me. You arrive on the scene at the sentencing stage and think I've rationalized this pimp's conduct. Errrr. Duh. And that's why you bark from anonymity: Like so many weasels trolling the Internet, you feel brave making unsupported, stupid assertions from a closet or a basement so you can evade accountability. There are  mental health organizations that might be able to aid you find courage.

rscottmoxley
rscottmoxley topcommenter

@ladybug1977 @rscottmoxley  Obviously, you and your DNA correspondents haven't been able to deal with reality since your precious pimp got arrest. (Remember your sister pathetically claiming Curtis, a man who chose to sell kids for sex, was the Treyvon Martin of CA?) You've made many stupid comments but one of your best might be your declaration of victory in this FBI prostitution case because you want to believe you've "hit a nerve" with me, the journalist covering his crimes. This might be a long shot, but I might have a way of explaining this situation to the likes of you. Put on your thinking cap or, if that's impossible, summon the person you might know who graduated from high school and contemplate this analogy: A sporting event is over and the bitter losers are talking trash and thumping their chests like morons. The winner--which, in this case, would be members of civilized society--merely smiles and points to the score board. Understand?

ladybug1977
ladybug1977

@rscottmoxley LOL I see I hit a nerve. Also for your information I did not misquote the bible maybe you need to pick it up and read it. And where in the bible does it state that I cannot use foul language? Like Paul said: But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; 2 Corinthians 11:6

ladybug1977
ladybug1977

@949girl @ladybug1977 First I was not talking about you when I addressed moxley not being in court or about some of the statements he made in the article. Now I see how you could of mistaken that, I should of made it clear. Second I never said I was Christian. Third I am not making an excuse for my nephew. What I did get upset about is the way they were attacking  my sister and told a bunch of lies about her. I am glad you never had to feel what it was like to grow up in poverty and hope that you never will. Now I was not in the court room but I did hear about it through my sister. And as far as being ghetto never that honey, you have me sadly mistaken. And I don't care what people say about me I know the most high has me. I will quote the bible as many times as I feel the need to because that is just me. Now like I said previously you can take it how you want to. Oh and to make it clear I don't have to convince anyone about anything.

rscottmoxley
rscottmoxley topcommenter

@949girl @rscottmoxley  @ladybug1977  Your imagination is probably right on... It's sad because they don't know how stupid/juvenile/punk they sound in a public forum. In their minds, attacking me for Curtis' pimping feels good because they can't muster the courage to admit he did anything illegal and that they sucked in giving him moral guidance. Now we know the answer to this question: What type of family environment raises a 19-year-old man who doesn't know it's wrong to sell kids into prostitution? This one...

949girl
949girl topcommenter

@rscottmoxley So for a person like myself who is only reading his family member's comments, does the way they represent themselves on here translate in to a way one would visualize them?  I'm trying to get a mental picture to see if they are as ghetto looking as they sound?

rscottmoxley
rscottmoxley topcommenter

@ladybug1977  @949girl  I've been covering the likes of you and your pimp/murderer relatives for decades. I'm not afraid of you, and your attempts at insulting me merely underscore your lack of class, morality and education. (But we already clearly knew that fact from your misquotes of the Bible while simultaneously cussing.) If you dare (and I know you don't have the courage), please ask U.S. District Court Judge Carter if he agrees with your claim that I hide in his court "like a little girl." Not that I owe you any explanation, but even a third-grader hell-bent, like you, on figuring out my location during the sentencing of your precious pimp relative could have deduced in 10 seconds that I was covering a different, more important sentencing hearing. On a slow news day, your Little Curtis didn't even rank a priority. If you want to help him recover, please let him rise above the likes of you and his mother.

@ladybug1977 I had some sympathy for your nephew;s situation growing up from what I read in this article (if true) and I even stated I had a small amount of sympathy for him in a previous comment.  I had a normal upbringing and i'm always grateful for that.  I couldn't imagine growing up in poverty and having faced the issues he had so I do think he had some obstacles working against him right from the start.  That's great, you shouldn't care what I think or anyone else.  But the fact is is that you aren't helping your nephew by coming on here and calling people names and presenting a hostile attitude.  I've never met you and have never even attended his trial but from the way you represent yourself and the other people in Mr. Canady's camp just on the comments board is hostile, ignorant and my perceived opinion of you lacks any sort of sympathy that I may have had to begin with.  You might think that acting aggressive makes people respect your side but it doesn't.  Those that make the most positive impact are generally calm and say things in a reasonable manner.  I wasn't in court, I don't work in law or journalism but I have been in a courtroom during a jury trial and spoken to a juror that convicted someone of first degree murder.  They very much so look at the people who comes in to court to support the defendant, you are a reflection of your nephew.  I don't know what you did or how your family acted but I can only imagine you guys acted really ghetto.  I'm sure your body language alone didn't help him at all.

If you are a Christian person then act like one.  Your actions should convince someone that you are a good person, spouting bible verses and saying you believe in God is just talk.  Put that in to action.  You don't have to tell everyone you are a Christian, it's like you are trying to convince everyone and trust me, it's not working!

@rscottmoxley     I dont know those girls, I know of them just like you know of them too. And if their own mothers allowed them to do this, what makes you think I would have had any control over their actions? @fishwithoutbicycle @toliveandieinLA  This pimp, like all disgusting criminals who've been caught, concoct sympathy explanations with the aid of their associates. Canady's support group--and I've seen this pathetic outfit face to face and read their lame excuses for months--is defined by stark ignorance. Like they argued from the outset, the minor girls were somehow to blame for Mr. Canady's pimping crimes. I have no doubt this crew continues to believe he did nothing wrong--they've said as much. And that's why they have no shame. They can't find basic decency if it's an inch from their faces. They outrageously quote the Bible, make anti-Jewish inferences and lamely find comfort casting blame on people who had nothing to do with the selling little girls for sex near Disneyland.
