Right-Wing Hysteria Over How Transgender Students Go Pee-Pee Fails to Spread

When a progressive media watchdog wanted to counter the hysteria of conservative pundits alarmed that transgender public school students in California can use the restroom facilities that correspond to their gender identity, it turned to the largest school districts in the state. Among them was the Garden Grove Unified School District, whose response corresponded with that of officials in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and Riverside.

Like their counterparts in those cities, officials with the Garden Grove district, the 11th largest in the state, reported to Media Matters for America no problems with transgenders in restrooms in the month since Gov. Jerry Brown signed the gender-equality law.

Garden Grove Unified School District

The Orange County-based Garden Grove Unified School District enrolled nearly 48,000 students in the 2011-2012 school year, making it the 11th-largest in the state.

Implementation of the School Success and Opportunity Act is proceeding apace in the district, spokeswoman Amy Stevens told Equality Matters.

"We are compliant with the law and have had no incidences," Stevens reported.

Media Matters explained it felt compelled to poll California school districts after right-wing media figures like Bill O-Reilly, Sean Hannity and Michelle Malkin suggested implementation of the law would cause anarchy, madness and restroom shenanigans.

One of the most laughable claims was that non-transgender students would sneak into the restrooms of the opposite sex to sneak peaks and then justify the peeping by explaining they'd been momentarily overcome by transgender feelings.

A month in, there has been no such report of that happening in California. But thanks for the idea, Fox News talking heads!

A right-wing coalition aims to overturn the law in a November referendum, but an initial signature count suggests they won't have collected enough signatures to make the ballot by a Feb. 24 deadline.

So if gender identity is completely self defined and independent of genetics and plumbing, it should be fluid as well.  So on Monday through Thursday I identify as male to get the earnings bonus.  Then on Friday through Sunday, I identify as female to get the drink specials and get treated on dates.  Wait? What? how dare you criticize MY GENDER IDENTITY you transphobe!!!!

I've always been (and always will be) a fan of the Weekly.  Sometimes I disagree with the Weekly's far left stance on every issue, but hey - that's what America is all about.  I'm curious though... don't you find transgendered people to be just a little bit odd and creepy?  Just a little?

First off, when you're writing a one sided puff piece it's probably a good idea to mention there have already been problems in schools with this law.

Second, this is OCweekly, you don't have that many readers to begin with. The only reason most people read at all is for entertainment pieces - good idea to leave one sided politics out of it...especially because it's OC, an area dominated by the "right-wing" you seem to despise. If you offend your audience, you'll have no audience.

@BBAIN  No. I find you a little odd and creepy, though. Why are you thinking about what other people have in their pants? That's weird.

@gnarchild  This isn't about politics. It's about ignorant haters vs. decent people.

"We are compliant with the law and have had no incidences," Stevens reported.

That really says it all.

Only when you go to the restroom and only from transgendered kids.

@MatthewTCoker @gnarchild  Florence High School, colorado. Ring a bell??? Come on man, isn't this your duty to know about these problems and maybe mention them?

@gaztoast  isn't about politics??? The headline reads "Right-Wing Hysteria"!!!!  The issue shouldn't be about politics, it SHOULD be about right vs wrong. However the "author" chose to include his biased politics from the get go. Sad.

@FishWithoutBicycle @gnarchild @MatthewTCoker  Yes you are wrong and clearly can't read. My "problem" with the article is that the "author" tried to turn it into a political issue and impose his ultra-biased agenda on the OCweekly readers instead of focusing on a social issue. Then later his hypocrisy shined through in the comment section.

@gaztoast @MatthewTCoker  I don't have an issue with the situation, with transgender students, or with bullying. I never made any statements about them directly. and yes there was a problem in Colorado. A very simple google search would be beneficial for you.

@MatthewTCoker  There wasn't a problem in Colorado either. Gnarchild is lying or misinformed.

@gnarchild @MatthewTCoker  The only problem there was PJI bullying a kid to the point she was put on suicide watch.

Their claims of harassment were totally unfounded and they ended up walking that back and saying that Jane Doe's mere presence constituted harassment.

@GustavoArellano @gnarchild @MatthewTCoker  feel free to one-up me chief. If you actually can do so without being sarcastic...I doubt it though.

@MatthewTCoker  ya that's the problem, it doesn't mention anything to compare or contrast. Maybe you should work a little harder and write a better article. I'm sorry you're offended that I called you out. "Potheads in Colorado" eh?  You're really starting to sound like a right-winger.

@gnarchild @MatthewTCokerNope, it doesn't. My post mentioned a poll of the largest California school districts, where there hasn't been any problems, which is probably why the effort to change the law here is failing. I really don't pay attention to those potheads in Colorado. Well, except for our corporate bosses ...

@gaztoast @gnarchild  I NEVER implied that the author was Picking on Kids AT ALL. Are you trying to imply something about my statements to him? Because I NEVER voiced an opinion on the subject - only the poorly written article.
