Arte Moreno Threatening to Move Angels to...Tustin?!

arte_moreno_bob_aul.jpg
It's now officially the silly season for your Anaheim Angels of Anaheim, as owner Arte Moreno is now acting like the billionaire baby he is. Anaheim officials aren't immediately giving him acres of land near Angels Stadium to fund what the Halos insist are much-needed upgrades to Angels Stadium--never mind that Disney refurbished the stadium about 20 years ago. So what has Moreno decided to do? Approach Tustin officials to start discussions about moving the Big A down the 5-to-the-55 and park it on the long-abandoned Tustin Marine Corps Air Station.

Um, what?

The Los Angeles Times broke the story over the President's Day weekend, on the same day that Orange County Register columnist TJ Simers eviscerated Anaheim councilwoman (and fellow 2013 OC Scariest People inductee with Moreno) Kris Murray as a "country bumpkin" and "Chicken Little Councilwoman" for kowtowing to the Angels' every corporate welfare need. Predictably, Moreno's biggest defenders in the pathetic charade that passes as Orange County's blogosphere, Matt Cunningham (who outed sex-abuse victims and ridiculed grieving mothers) and Dan Chmielewski (a perpetually insufferable pendejo who's at his insufferable-est when writing about baseball and recently used the passing of Angels legend Jim Fregosi to slam his opponents)) are joining Murray in screaming that the sky is falling for Anaheim.

Moreno's tantrum is hilarious, especially since Tustin is the Garden Grove of OC: a hick town always dreaming high with publicly subsidized projects that go nowhere. Then again, maybe Tustin deserves the Angels. Any move by Tustin to woo the Angels would no doubt involve giving Moreno the land he wants to not only build a stadium, but to then develop to fund construction. That amounts to a giveaway into the hundreds of millions of dollars to a billionaire. And it would be wonderful for Tustin's super-majority Republican council--as dimwitted a collection of public officials as you can find in OC--to justify their corporate welfare while slashing funding all across town for the city's increasing poor. Hey, Arte: can you do an Irwindale on Tustin and hose those losers for a couple mil?

Tustin would be awesome! Great city! Move to Tustin Arte! Tustin is the Garden Grove of OC? Please explain! Garden Grove has some great food places also! Don't be hating.

Can they at least stop calling them the LA Angels?

I don't really follow or care about sports... that being said, Scoscia won the Angels their only World Series.

Where in Stanton? Theres no room over there! I say... Carson. Get them over the L.A. County line and move a refinery out to Barstow.

And of course commentary about Republican councilmen being dumb. That was completely uncalled for, and probably very untrue. If anything this fact makes me tempted to move to Tustin. Which is also far from being a "hick town". Tustin is pretty far from being Lake Elsinore.

Does anyone here actually follow the real story as to what is going on?! By the looks of this story I don't believe the OC Weekly staff writers have been following the story either. I think people should read what's actually going on before writing garbage. The Angels want to stay in Anaheim and the city has been asking the Angels organization to comply with stupid requests and they are bending over backwards to comply with the city yet somehow the city keeps pushing things back. Everyone here should do themselves a favor and stop believing one article they read by a writer who's also only read one article.

The big piece that everyone is missing is that Arte will sign a 20 year lease if the city gives him the 153 acres but wants to lease this land for 66 years for 1$.  So Arte can leave after 20 years (probably will have an escape clause sooner) and still be raking the city over the coals with the land lease for 46 additional years.  Terrible deal for the city.  If you go to the City of Tustin setup for Tustin Legacy you will see that most of the land is earmarked for residential.  It would diminish the value of the homes and basically turn the whole development plan upside down to put a 45k seat stadium in the middle of all that.  Very unlikely.  Arte is trying to rake the city over the coals by leaking information to the media in hopes that the city is scared into signing a deal.  Have you heard of any owner that really has any intention of leaving  leak early stage negotiation information?  If he was planning on seriously leaving he would keep all this confidential (just like the Rams, Ravens, Titans etc).

Henry Samueli has poured millions of his own dollars into the Honda Center (another city owned facility) without any concessions from the city.  Arte needs to sell the team to a real owner like Samueli.  Arte should be happy to be where he is at.  The city inferred that their preferred deal  would be to negotiate a deal where Moreno would ground-lease the land the Big A is currently on (or even be given the stadium for free) in order to secure the Angels  in Anaheim long term.   The other option that was discussed would be a land swap where Arte could build his stadium next door (basically given the land for free) and the city would re-capture the land that the Big-A currently sits on for development purposes.  Both are very fair deals but Arte has balked and wants the whole site!

Remember that the City of Anaheim has a shovel ready EIR completed for this land for a 65k seat NFL stadium.  Arte Moreno threw a wrench in all that claiming that it would negatively impact the Angels if a NFL stadium was built.  Furthermore it makes a lot of sense for Arte to lease this land for $1/year and then in turn build a NFL stadium  and get a portion of parking/concessions etc if a team does move.  Arte has very little if any real estate development experience.  It is obvious he has an angle- that angle in my opinion is being the landlord to a NFL team.

Then Garden Grove must be the Stanton of OC.  That leaves Stanton being that crappy little alley behind the pho restaurant in the part of Little Saigon that's not Westminster.

So, when Art Moreno moves the team to Tustin, will they be known as the Anaheim Angels of Tustin?

Anaheim to Tustin? A new stadium? With taxpayers paying all the expenses, I assume.

who the hell is the editor over there? How does this stuff get published "Tustin is the Garden Grove of OC"...uh no, Garden Grove is the Garden Grove of the OC. This is all BS, Moreno is only doing this to try and negotiate new terms on his current location. He has no intention of moving the team to Tustin, what a joke.

Damn! When I read the caption on the title page, I thought we were gonna see Arte move the Angels all the way down south to Monterrey, pero, no manches, no es cierto. Obviously el Codo Grande is too cheap to make a real move south!

Arte Moreno is a bully and a thug. He is a bully for holding "his" team hostage from the good people of Anaheim, who have given him the shirt off their backs.

As far as the development of the land goes, The brains behind arte are two guys in arizona, who are big time real estate guys, and Moreno's partners. In fact, when Moreno was the President of the billboard company, he was untruthful to the Department of Justice, and steered a sweet deal to his friend. (MUCH more on that later).

When Moreno says he has the "resources" to build a new stadium, it are those two guys who get it done.

Arte always says that he "loves the fans"....right! The same fans from whom he gets $50bucks a 6-pack for beer! The same fans from whom he took their name off "his" team.

We are lucky the media has FINALLY figured Arte out...he had everybody fooled for many years...Just wait until the truth comes out about some of his other dealings...

Artie is a sound business man. I'd love for the Angels to have a cool, happening environment around the stadium like they do in San Diego. Too bad the city can't see the big picture. The alternative site in Tustin has all of the amenities that Anaheim does. If nothing else, artie is exploring all options and creating negotiation leverage. Plus, I'd love to see the Angels play in a state of the art ball park instead of the 50 year old (4th oldest in baseball), multi purpose recreational center they play in now. I'll follow the Angels anywhere they move, whether it's Tustin or downtown LA. This owner wants to win and he is demonstrating that.

One thing that Murray, Cunningham, and the rest of the pearl-clutchers have failed to address: if Moreno is prepared to walk from Anaheim at the prospect of spending $150 million of his own money to maintain Anaheim Stadium, why would he then turn around to spend hundreds of millions above that to build a new stadium in Tustin – or anywhere else?He certainly can’t ask the Tustin Redevelopment Agency for the money. And given that Moreno seems to be a rather autocratic fellow – and that his autocratic behavior is driving the actual baseball-playing side of the operation into the ground – I can’t see a lot of investors eager to pony up millions of dollars to be his silent partner.

And wasn't it Charles Black -- the city's crack consultant in 'the business of baseball' -- who was strongly in favor of moving the Angels' opt-out date from 2016 to 2019, so as to give more headroom for leisurely negotiations and reduce the chance that Moreno would act rashly and irrationally?  Well, well, look what a great decision that's turning out to be.  Any council member not already in the tank for Moreno might want to consider reassessing some of the other advice that they've been given so far ...

What stupid requests are you referring to?  The Angels wanted 153+ acres of land for $1/year for 66 years and only want to sign a 20 year lease.  Would love to hear why this is such a great deal for the city?  Furthermore the team will be branded as "Los Angeles"  why would the city of Anaheim give up a piece of $300m+ land to have no branding recognition at all.  Angels are asking for ridiculous concessions and the city should be approaching with caution.  The city in their infinite wisdom gave Arte 3 additional years to escape instead of just the one time escape that was in the lease.  It is the City of Anaheim that is bending over backwards and Arte Moreno not moving at all.  The days of public subsidies for owners are done.  Arte needs to shut up or ship out.  Look what Samueli is doing across the freeway.  Building a winner and spending his own money to improve the facility without holding the city hostage.

no, arte is not a businessman. He is a promoter. The brains behind him are 2 of his business partners in Arizona.

@Biff  Moreno loves to "entertain". It wouldn't surprise me if he has some members of the Council in the tank. Moreno is a bully, which is why he hates Tom Tait...Tait can NOT be bullied or bought off.

I wonder what a REAL owner like GENE AUTRY would do?

@ConcernedResident  arte is a bully. He regards the City of Anaheim folks as "hacks", who are out of his league. After he beat them in Court over the name change, he is quite confident that he can beat them up again. Frankly, Gustavo Arellano, has the courage to call Arte our for his mendacity and shady dealings.

What I find funny is how arte always says, he "loves the fans"...that is the biggest joke of all!!

@gnarchild @GustavoArellano  gnarchild, arte moreno is playing the City of Anaheim like a violin. Arte is a bully, who will  shake down EVERY citizen in Anaheim down for their lunch money.
