UC Irvine Invites Obama to Speak at 50th Anniversary

If Obama doesn't stop by the Anthill.. well, that's a shame

What's it going to take to bring President Barack Obama (back) to Orange County? More big-dollar fundraisers? OC's penchant for e-cigs? The largest area university's 50th birthday?

That's what the administration at UC Irvine is hoping. Since last April, a committee of faculty, staff members, and one City of Irvine employee have been trying to convince the president to visit UC Irvine on June 14, 2014 to give a commencement speech at a special ceremony. The event would mark 50 years since then President Lyndon Johnson descended from the sky in a helicopter to dedicate a patch of dirt for the creation of UC Irvine.

"President Lyndon B. Johnson's helicopter landed on a barren cattle range the morning of June 20, 1964, to dedicate the land for UC Irvine," said Cathy Lawhon, UC Irvine director of media relations and chair of the 50th anniversary planning committee. "At that time, the founding chancellor Daniel G. Aldrich Jr. articulated his vision of a unique multidisciplinary institution that would produce research and insights key to the growth of region. That message resonated with President Johnson."

"...We are planning our 50th anniversary celebration with a focus on looking forward to new opportunities for innovation, growth and prosperity for all in this diverse community," she continued. "We believe this is a message that will resonate with President Obama."

What's UC Irvine done in its 50 years to deserve the visit? Only becoming the youngest university ever to be admitted to Association of American Universities, being named one of the best universities under 50 years old, and open (or allow someone to open) what is probably the best campus pub in existence.

(I hear the President is a big beer drinker.)

The committee received notice that their invitation had been received shortly after they sent it, reports the New University, so now it's just a waiting game. In the meantime, the committee is preceding with planning as if the President will accept, according to Lawhon.

Well, there is something to be said about hope.

My daughter is scheduled to graduate in June.  If this fraud actually accepts the invitation, my family will not go and she will not march.  I can't believe that these young people are still not aware of how his policies are going to affect them when they graduate.  Wait till they have to pay for their own health care and can't find a job. What is going to take for these young people to wake up.

He needs to go speak at the Berkeley commencement.  He is loved up there.  Doesn't he know that Orange County is a republican strong hold.  The last time his campaign was in Orange County, they did not pay for all the security that was necessary.  Thanks to the tax payers of Orange County.

perhaps it would be nice to also meet with the yet to be 'recognized' first peoples of this area (the Acjachemen) to discuss how sacred sites are continuing to be developed (bolsa chica, trestles, banning ranch, etc) despite archeological and cultural concerns. or, perhaps he would like to explain the overriding importance of fracking and natural gas resources to ease our concerns about water usage, contamination and geological instability. Perhaps the president would like to let us know how much safer we are with the security state now in place, and corporate interests well protected at all levels of government....i'm sure there's more, but maybe we can settle by tuning into the nightly news for our daily dose of everything is okay....nothing to see ....lets keep moving folks....everything is going to be fine....

And if the president never left Washington, people would be bitching about that.

So the university feels like the President should stop running the country (like he was anyways, pffft) come down to Orange County for a party in Irvine and if he doesn't its a shame. Give me a break. Sounds like a snotty entitled brat that asked for Mercedes for their 15th birthday.

The funny part is.. Wasn't this the racist cop? Where is Obama now when murdering cops walk free. By the way I got my bachelors degree from UCI and there was more political activism between the Muslims, Palestinians, and Israelis, but I've ever seen anywhere besides the Middle East. I'd hardly call it a dry campus.

Who would have guessed a story like this would bring the nuts out? "The president is speaking at a university - outrageous! I must take a stand!!"

It's a nice sentiment but this celebration of the 50th anniversary of UCI's presidential dedication (NOT of the school's first graduating class) is actually causing half of the undergraduate seniors to graduate on the following Monday. How incredibly inconvenient and frustrating for all of those out-of-town family members who worked so hard to get their students to this point. Do the celebration on Friday and let us graduate on the weekend when our families dont have to take off work.

Oh, yes...it's ok for the president to swill beer while he waffles on marijuana legalization. What a tool.

And who is going to pick up the tab for the added Irvine police presence, disruption and loss of income to local businesses, etc.,???? Last time he was in Newport, the cost of police overtime was like 35k. I think that UCI should be obligated to pay for all of that if they invited him.

Doesn't take much to get the Obama crybabies to try and out witty one another.
