The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board voted just after midnight today to expel 11 students who were part of a wide-ranging cheating scandal at Corona del Mar High School that may have actually involved as many as 150 students.

The expulsions were announced after a long closed session that followed the regular board meeting.

Those students who were expelled will be allowed to attend other schools in the district.

Meanwhile, the parents of four of those students have circulated a letter around the school district asking why their children are being punished when the scandal involves as many as 150 who worked with Timothy Lance Lai, a private tutor who is still being sought by Newport Beach cops for questioning but has disappeared.

The parents claim administrators told them if the implicated students cooperated in the investigation, which they did, then their punishment would be light. Instead, they were suspended and then recommended for expulsion by Corona del Mar High's Principal Kathy Scott.

Firstly, this a perfect example of scapegoatism. From an IT perspective the exploits that the students used are not considered hacking. This was a breach in security caused by poor practices on the school staff. In order to save face and not loose credibility the school district has chosen to have closed door meetings and lay the blame entirely on students and the tutor. Granted what they have done is wrong, this should have been treated as a learning experience for the district to shore up security practices and perhaps even get a consultant in to "fix" the exploits. Secondly, these students will no longer have a "normal" life. The expulsion is an extreme way of brushing this problem under the rug, it is not the first time and as it appears, will not be the last time students breach the school grading system.

tl;dr

school district fails students

"These are the type of kids that spend too much time online and don't know the meaning of hard work." said the exact same guy who said "I cheated my way out of high school". How fucking ironic is that??

These are the type of kids that spend too much time online and don't know the meaning of hard work. The last time they had to go through struggle was when they tried passing a video game. Fuck these kids in particular

This is nothing new to the school district and they should already have a plan of action in place for such situations. When my kids were there, they had a similar incident, where some students hacked the computers and changed some of their grades. I think this was about 2003 or 2004. These are smart kids and if only they'd learn not to take short cuts and focus on getting the best education. CdM is a stellar school with bright minds and even brighter futures- too bad these kids made such poor decisions.

No way, fucking idiots. I cheated my way out of high school because back in the 90's we all were receiving a bullshit education to begin with. It wasn't till I got to community college that I actually figured things out better and learned from a real instructor and not some over the hill teacher who was just trying to secure her retirement plan

Let's hope the Newport Mesa Unified School Board makes a choice re-evaluate Principal Kathy Scott's management of the cheating scandal, and the public controversies she was also involved with while employed at the Anaheim Union HS District (Scott transcribed alleged sexual text messages between former AUHSD teacher Christopher Ontiveros--Ontiveros was aquitted in a criminal trial), AND the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District (Thomas Arthur Beltran pled guilty to13 felony counts of sex abuse crimes against minor students)--Scott was Beltran's supervisor and left SM district in Spring 2006 for employment with AUHSD.  According to media reports, Scott's alleged report to law enforcement never made it to Beltran's employment file.

When I was in high school cheating was facilitated and encouraged by the staff so as to keep up the graduation and GPA numbers for the school.

What they did was idiotic, the skills involved with the actions they took would beg to differ from your opinion.

I believe it. I imagine it might still go on...so schools don't lose federal funds. Of course, I've never understood how punishing schools by giving them LESS money is going to improve student performance...
