Itzcoatl Ocampo's Father: I'm Going to Scatter My Son's Ashes at Camp Pendleton, Per His Wishes

Itzcoatl Ocampo
Part 2 of a two-part interview. Read our previous interview with Refugio Ocampo here...
Refugio Ocampo blames himself for what happened to his son, Itzcoatl.

"I had to sign the paperwork allowing my son to join the Marines at age 17," he said. "I didn't want him to go--I wanted him to go to college. But he said that once he turned 18, he'd sign up anyways. So I signed for him to join, but told him he had to take full responsibility for his actions."

Ocampo would eventually ship out to Iraq, never seeing any combat but returning a scarred man, according to family and friends. They blame that experience for turning Ocampo into the killer of six people in late 2011 and 2012, crimes for which he was awaiting trial for before swallowing Ajax and killing himself over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Refugio has no love lost for the Marines, claiming they didn't help Itzcoatl get the psychological help he needed. Nevertheless, Dad plans to go through with what his son wanted: having his ashes scattered at Camp Pendleton.

"My son put his life on the line for this country," Refugio told the Weekly. "He went, and he served. And when he needed his country, it abandoned him. Nevertheless, he loved the Marines."

Previous reports say that Refugio and a neighbor who served in Vietnam urged Itzcoatl to seek psychological care, but that Ocampo refused. Refugio argues that the Marines should've been proactive in treating Ocampo--and that he's not the only veteran who needs help.

"There are more like him out there, but the government will not acknowledge it," Refugio said, before repeating it. "There's a lot of others but they refuse to help him. To train someone to kill, [the military] needs to disengage them--but the government just throws them back in. They're not taking full responsibility.

"I love this country," Refugio concluded, "but the people who run it are a bag of mierda."

And then he dropped this surprise: Itzcoatl's brother, Mixcoatl, is currently in Afghanistan with the Army. He still does not know about Itzcoatl's suicide, according to Ocampo attorney Randy Longwith.

Itzcoatl's body won't be turned over to his family for a while, pending an autopsy and an OC DA investigation. When they finally take possession of their son, they'll have Itzcoatl cremated and drive his remains down to Pendleton to scatter them at the Marine base, saying it was his son's wishes.

"They're not going to let us," Refugio said, "but we're going to do it."

Refugio you are a disgusting person and need serious mental help. Why won't you simply apologize to the families of the victims? Your son was an evil monster and you seem like one too.

Maybe the community could get together and volunteer to keep a watch on this family and report them if they head toward Camp Pendleton. The last known address of the family, according to a newspaper article, 4351 Lakeview Ave, Yorba Linda, CA. They should not be allowed to put this killers ashes at any military base.

The Ocampo family is one big bag of mierda! They should all be flushed down the toilet!

"Refugio has no love lost for the marines" well scumbag I am sure the Marines feel the same about you and your son! How dare you threaten to pollute the base with your son's filthy ashes. How rude! I hope you try and someone locks you up, you should be ashamed of yourself and your son.

If I remember right they came to the country illegally and got citizenship just a few years ago. Maybe they need to denounce their American citizenship and return to Mexico if they think it's so bad here. How dare them! I am sure they have received thousands in benefits since they got here. What a bunch of unthankful turds. Take the ashes back to Mexico too!

Came back from Iraq a scarred man and the family blames this experience for turning Ocampo into a serial killer. WTF? Article says the guy was not in combat and even if he were how does this turn someone into a serial killer? Killing helpless people who did nothing to him? I am quite sure the military did not train this guy to stalk and murder innocent civilians in America so I don't get the comment about "disengaging them." In reality most studies on serial killers show they had very troubled upbringings. Sounds like the family has displaced anger and needs to take a closer look at themselves and how they created a monster. Do they actually expect people to be sympathetic for their son or his death? Wow, I sure don't feel bad for them and cannot imagine who on earth would. I am sure the victim's families don't appreciate this at all. What a scumbag this father is to say things like this. Very disrespectful toward our military and country, period.

Someone should arrest Refugio Ocampo for threatening to deface government property.

Oh, and fuck Ocampo's wishes. I hope the guards at the gate don't let his family in. I'm sorry they lost a son, but their son was a murderer and a coward. He doesn't deserve what he wished for.

Eon RosVive wasn't hugged enough as a child. He (she?) is bitter that a person could love or have faith in something so strongly and unconditionally as to be willing to die. No soldier wishes death upon another. I,for one, don't blame the enemy combatants who believe what they fight for is right, provided they fight against soldiers and not civilians. Strangely, Eon doesn't mention those who murder our (or any) innocent women and children in the name of (their misguided interpretation of) the Koran. To Eon, it's okay that an individual blows themselves up in a crowded marketplace where there isn't a single soldier in sight, but when a US soldier, sailor, airman or Marine kills an innocent foreign national who tragically was is a war zone, we are the incarnate of evil. Sad life you live, Eon.

This dad needs to put down the crack pipe. He really must be living in an alternate universe. Has he or any of the family members ever thought to apologize to the families for their loss? Ocampo killed the mother and brother of one of his friends, set his friend up for it, and let his friend sit in jail accused of their murders. Eder Herrera didn't get to go to his mom's or brother's funeral. Then when he seemed to get away with it, he ambushed 4 men and brutally killed them. No one in his family noticed the serial killers book in his room. The reason he was drinking was to wipe his conscience. He joined the marines thinking he would get to kill people. This was a problem a long time ago, not caused by delivering mail and supplies on base.

Someone needs to beat the s*** out of Refugio and his wife too if they even try to put his ashes anywhere near Camp Pendleton. Take away all the welfare they get too. What a bunch of LOSERS.

yes! but not just that, there is usually a specific target a motive for going towards a certain group of people. Like only those with blond hair, or who shopped at a certain store. The method of disposal speaks for their methods as well. Also serial killers are psychopaths and have no remorse for those they killed, the fact he killed himself by snacking on ajax tells me wasn't insane. Just a bad joke, by calling him a serial killer you're going to lump him in the same vaulted category as Dahmer, Gacy, Bundy, Gein and the rest of them.

csense

Unbelievable. Refugio Ocampo is a very sick man. He and the mother raised a batshit crazy serial killer and want sympathy now? Their son may have been a Marine but he wasn't even in combat, he must have embellished his role overseas to his parents. The parents are the ones to blame for this POS killer. Someone should lock them up with a bottle of Ajax so they can join their son in hell.

Mass murderers murder groups of people at once, such as a public shooting or bombing. Serial killers kill their victims one by one over a period of time, usually three or more individual victims.

Apparently there is some troll on this site who doesn't like what I have to say and instead of addressing me directly they choose to use a name similar to mine to post crude sexual remarks. Stay classy!

Jon, I wish I could like your post 10x. I hope Marines and civilians alike protest and that any government and military installation refuse his ashes and body. I'm not sure how it works in the case of Ocampo, if he would get an honorable funeral with trumpet, 21 gun salute and a flag for his family, but I don't think he deserves it. He deserves nothing more from the United States of America. He served us and I'm sure did a pretty good job when he was in, thank you, and that is where it ends. I feel sorry for his family as I am a parent too, and I'm sure they are heartbroken like any other loved one, especially a parent would be...but, their son does not deserve anything else.

The article starts out "Refugio blames himself for what happened to his son" then he goes on to blame the Marines. What a narcissistic psycho. The parents are 100% to blame for how this psycho turned out, has nothing to do with the Marines. Then he said they should have "deprogrammed him"... from what? Delivering fuel, water and mail, lol. The dad really is a psycho just like his son. Put the ashes down the toilet where they belong.

Jon, once a Marine always a Marine. You're always living up to the standards of being a Marine. Once you violate the standards, you are no longer a Marine. You dishonor the Corps. ANd that's the whole meaning of the saying Once a Marine always a Marine, and our quote of Semper Fidelis, always faithful. This guy is not those things. Anyone trying to take his side don't understand the standards you set for yourself when you live as a Marine. OOHRAH

My grandfather served in the Army Air Corps during the last time our rights were actually under any kind of threat, and he'd be far too humble to claim any credit for protecting the rest of us. The fact is, the military really is doing a great disservice to our veterans by not giving them better psychological care.

@PEPEspray @brownout You mean this psycho needed psychological help from his time delivering supplies and mail on base in Iraq? Sounds like he and his family needed psychological help for whatever was going on in their home. The Marines should not be responsible for what the family should have done to begin with.
