Ethan Couch, Teen Killer of 4, Brings Affluenza to the Home of Affluenza: Newport Beach

newport-academy.jpg
A 16-year-old drunken driver who escaped jail time for killing four people because he suffers from "affluenza" will apparently get treatment for his "affliction" in the capital of "affluenza:" Newport Beach.

Affluenza was described by the defense for Ethan Couch as what he "suffers" from because his parents are rich and have never given him boundaries. They looked the other way when Ethan drank, as he did one night when he killed a mother, her daughter, another young woman and a pastor along the side of a Texas road.

Only 16, so not old enough to even be consuming alcohol legally, Couch had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit and was speeding. The four counts of manslaughter he faced could have put him in prison for up to 20 years. But the judge sentenced him to 10 years probation and time served at a residential rehab.

Because the affluenza made Ethan do it.

A CNN story on this has sparked outrage and the revelation that Couch's family will spend about a half million dollars for treatment at the Newport Academy, which is based in Newport Beach but has homes elsewhere in Orange County and around the country.

"Newport Academy is dedicated to providing comprehensive, gender-specific, integrated treatment programs for adolescent males and females in an environment of caring and compassion by which teens and their families may recover from the destructive effects of substance abuse and related behavioral health issues," reads the literature.

No mention is made of treating affluenza, but according to The Fix, Newport Academy offers "equine-assisted psychotherapy" and mixed martial arts. The teen rehab center is described as being "two red-tile-roofed, Spanish-style residences" that are "15 miles northeast of downtown Newport Beach, amid bougainvillea and rose gardens."

That goes with the rose-colored world some are fortunate enough to be born into.

Who was the "judge" on this case?

I thought I recognized the stench of conflict of interest. If the judge in fact is a friend of the little punk's family, she should have recused herself for that fact alone. Instead, she just perpetuated - and justified - the "mistreatment" inflicted on this poor child by his idiotic parents. Kinda like the story of the guy who kills his parents and throws himself on the mercy of the court because he's an orphan.

Once again, this kid does not suffer consequences for what he did. That judge did everybody (the kid and society) a disservice by not punishing him. He literally got away with murder and until he learns that he is not above being punished - he will only continue down this path of destruction, destroying himself and others around him. What an unfortunate mess!

Both exist. And both are in play, but it would appear class > color if you look at court decisions. More money = better lawyers.

I read on Radar Online that his parents gave him a mansion.  He apparently lived alone at 16 in his own mansion.  I really believe that in this case money can't buy happiness.  I don't think this kid will ever or has ever had to live a worthwhile life.  Unless he is a sociopath, he'll be haunted for this for the rest of his life.  I do agree he should have gotten a prison sentence BUT at 16 he had no parental supervision so I do believe his parents are equally responsible.  I either see the kid going no where and hitting bottom and possibly overdosing or committing suicide or turning his life around and hopefully doing something good in the future.  I'm leaning more towards the first option though.

This sets so much precedent for rich kids not to be accountable for anything they do.

"Affluenza" has to be the most ludicrous excuse for murder cooked up by defense attorneys since the "gay panic" defense. (Or claiming a man "committed suicide" by "letting" the cops beat him to death...RIP Kelly Thomas).

Unbelievable, the little over-privileged prick. Its amazing what this casino capitalism (American capitalism) breeds. When idiots reproduce at will with ungodly amounts of money they don't need. Only in a system like this do you get idiotic parents with so much money. The biggest sociopath, ass hole, idiots have the most money. What a fucking joke. This system is a fucking joke, these paper pushing jerk offs with their bank accounts, accumulating real estate and digital numbers on a bank computer screen and then on to create this pointless life, this menace, this reprobate, this pointless human fucking being. Fuck that kid, throw him in the human garbage disposal! The little jerk off is going to get worse from all this, I guarantee it. That amount of privilege should never be given to any person.

NOT influeza Jason, affluenza is a social disease. You may want to look it up before your next comment... Either way this is ridiculous that we have to have this discussion because this kid should be in prison for life! Money talks and criminals walk...

The people can overthrow this decision but instead you all will just cry about it in the comment section of the story and keep it moving. We the people have the ability to change this country. Instead we let old white people run a muck, do drugs, tax the shit out of us, screw hookers and go on lavish vacations. Shit will not change unless the sheeple wake up and demand change!

Yeh, these parents are a joke, but there are plenty of poor people that use poverty as their excuse.  Not alot of gang-banging rich kids, but plenty of poor people pumping out kids for the welfare check that don't care about them. Same disease, just the other side of the coin.  There are plenty of rich and poor parents that do ok.

@949girl@FishWithoutBicycle

Agree."Affluenza" is a sadly accurate term. And I think you're also right about his parents sharing culpability in their son's actions...but I'm not expecting to see them punished in any way, unfortunately. :-(

@FishWithoutBicycle@949girlI agree with you but I do feel that his parents are equally to blame, if not more.  As crazy as it sounds, I think that is a very accurate term "affluenza".  Sad but accurate.
