Santa Ana Warns Pot Collectives To Close Or Face Fines

Santa Ana's city attorney has apparently sent warning letters to all medical marijuana collectives currently operating in the city. The letters reportedly state that any storefront dispensary must close its doors within 15 days of Nov. 15--basically the end of the month--or else face misdemeanor charges and fines of $1000 per day.

It's unclear how many clubs received the letter, but Santa Ana would seem to be enforcing its ongoing ban on medical marijuana dispensaries. That ban was reinforced by the California Supreme Court decision earlier this year which upheld the right of cities to prohibit storefronts. According to a source at one collective that received the letter, the city referenced that court ruling to justify its actions.

Despite the city's ban, residents in January 2013 gathered enough signatures in support of a referendum that would allow cannabis clubs to operate to go before voters in November 20122014.

As the Weekly has previously reported, federal prosecutors who were cooperating with city officials in Orange County had initiated asset forfeiture lawsuits against landlords who were renting to cannabis clubs. But after the Weekly reported that, contrary to the Obama administration's public statements, internal emails showed the feds were going after dispensaries that were obeying state law, the feds dropped those cases. Two of the buildings the feds had targeted were in Santa Ana, one on 17th Street and one on Edinger.

I hope all of you who read this and other articles on the topic show up for your jury summons. The end of Alcohol prohibition was hastened by the unwillingness of juries to convict any more people for violations related to alcohol.

They want to ban natures answer to numerous ailments, but they allow mind twisting, soul destroying pharmaceuticals in every corporate run drug store in the city... follow the money... high profit drug companies and ignorant greedy politicians.

There are hundreds of articles about violence, suicide and mass killings like Columbine, connected to Santa Ana City Council approved pharmaceutical drugs such as, Prozac, Ritalin and Zoloft, but non about people who medicate with marijuana, committing any acts of violence or self inflicted injury/suicide.

Mayor Miguel Pulido,

Concilman Vince Sarmiento,

Councilwoman Michele Martinez,

Councilwoman Angelica  Amezcua,

Councilman David Benavides,

Councilman Roman A. Reyna,

you need to educate yourself on this subject and get the facts.  Your actions are hurting good honest hard working people who get relief from a multitude of aliments by using medical  marijuana, recommended by a MEDICAL DOCTOR!

Imagine if this was your child Mayor Pulido,  Miss Amezcua, and some ignorant, ill-informed politician was trying to ban access to the one thing that helps, how would you feel?

Nothing new here people..please move forward... What you think SA won't do anything and allow 29 clubs + to operate without any kinds of rules/regulations/taxation? Next year there will be 2 ballot measures for SA for pot shops..also a statewide election to allow cannabis..So move on people..cannabis will come back stronger...just find a means to get your meds till then..lots of services available...move on ...nothing to look at...

We can stop this nonsense by passing CCHI2014, legalize cannabis and hemp in California! Read it, sign up and VOTE! These prohibitionist will fold after they see their cohorts being voted out of office. CCHI2014 will end prohibition against cannabis and hemp.

Less tax revenue and more criminal acts will be the result. You have got to understand that they only way they can justify their jobs is if they make laws that keep their jobs.

SanTana city attorney and city council are idiots. I beat stage 4 colon cancer with the combination of modern medicine and medical marijuana. With the MM I wouldn't have been able time survive the chemotherapy and radiation treatment. I've lived in this city for 54 years this is by far the worst leadership this city has had. #Fuckcancer! And fuck this city leaders

Just goes to show you that voting is a waste of time , the feds will over turn any law they don't agree with. If voting made a difference then it would be illegal.

Great work, Nick.  I'm glad to hear the 1st amendment caused the Feds to back off in those cases.  I live in Garden Grove, we need a referendum like that in our city as well.

So they are going to be facing Misdemeanors and a fine? What about the folks facing felony charges at present? Do they get down graded to misdemeanors? Also, you write that the vote will be in 2012. I thin its 2014.

@im4cchi2014 the problem is that passing anything wont happen in the next 15 days. Merry Christmas Santa Ana, you get coal in your stocking. I guess we will be looking for plaintiffs in another CDPA case.

@Scott Carvalho

I strongly suspect many of these same fools who want to see Prop 215 overturned think Prop "Hate" (8) should stand...
