Johnny's Saloon Ordered to Remove Iconic Sign Supporting Veterans, Say Hell No. The City of HB Responds: Update

Update 1: See the City of Huntington Beach's statement regarding the offending sign on page two.

ORIGINAL POST, NOV 25, 4:30 P.M.: Don't get in the way of community activist and bar owner Johnny Kresimir and his support of veterans. Kresimir and his bar are known for their rabid support of our troops and charities that support them, including the iconic sign that sits above his Johnny's Saloon on Beach Boulevard and Slater Avenue in Huntington Beach that reads, "Thank a veteran for your freedom," and features the POW/MIA remembrance emblem.

Today, Kresimir tells us that he received a letter from HB Code Enforcement stating they have two days to remove the sign or they will be slapped with a $960 fine for non-compliance. "Looks like we will have to pay a hefty fine of $960 in 2 days bc we are not going down without a fair fight!" Kresimir said on Facebook.

The announcement on the saloon's Facebook page has stirred up understandable outrage from supporters of the bar and the sign. Customers are already vocalizing plans to protest at the next city council meeting, raise funds to help pay the fine, and start a petition for its permanent, legal placement.

"Every car dealership can do whatever they want whenever they want making Beach Blvd tacky but us little guys that want to spread a positive message get screwed?" Kresimir said.

This news comes exactly two weeks after Kresimir and the Johnny's Saloon team helped to fund and run a large veterans' charity car show on the Huntington Beach Pier to raise funds and awareness for veterans' issues. "After spending $1,000's sponsoring the city's Marine 3/1 Marathon & The Surf City Veterans Day Car Show this is the THANKS we get," Kresimir noted.

Great free publicity for a bar. Nobody has ever talked about Johnny's Saloon this much. Congratulations. What the fuck does selling alcohol have to do with supporting our troops? In this case it's nothing more than a marketing tool. As an American, I hate chest thumping American bullshit.  You should make every bar patron recite the pledge of allegiance before you serve them.

The sign over Johnny's bar is a sign or enormous proportions, not just a rectangular billboard, but a sure sign of what freedom really is among those who understand freedom. God says that there is a time for war, and a time for peace. Death, and the risking, and giving of ones life, if it begins at the top, as it did with Jesus on the cross, for those created vessels he came to save, is the way of God, the greatest gives his life for the lesser, the creastor for those he created.

Unlike the communist socialists countries and the Muslim nations, whose leaders always send the lesser to battle and to fight,  and to die for them, George Washington, our first leader and president, risked his life as the leader of the colonial army, to fight the tyranny of the king of England and his desire to rule over the people of the land, a people who had no voice or freedom under his kingdom, (or image).

God commanded the man, Adam, when he created him, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it..." The new land, America, was sparsely  inhabited, and needed to be, (in God's sight), to be filled, and subdued, according to the eternal plan and purpose of the creator.

There was a time for war, when George Washington, the leader, led the fight to rid the the land of the king, (the want to be ruler) of all the lives of all the people, of the new land to be filled and subdued. When the revolution was won by the general, as a form for all future leaders to be in the lead of risking their lives, for the people they love and want to be free, he set the pattern of what America should and could be.

The founding fathers spent years talking, and looking at all of the ways that men could self govern themselves, without a mob mentality, or the tyranny of a corrupt ruler, like all of the communists and socialist types of governments had, ruling over the people, thinking using them as pawns for their own wealth. Having a constitution as the ruler of the land, and not men, was their idea, an idea that came from much prayer, and with much blood shed for the new ruler of the land, the constitution.

The sign on Johnny's bar, concerning the shed blood of veterans, has nothing to do with the bar, it is a sign of America, those who have not fought foreigners, but who have fought foreign rulers, (who in God's sight), have kept their people in darkness of God's word, and the freedom that he has gives to men through the death of his son, Christ Jesus, the Lord. Anytime there is a void, where there is an empty presence of God's word, the dictators arise, and they fill the land with their images, (their kingdoms), that rule over the people, using their armies not to fight foreign enemies, but their own people, like Hitler, the rulers of China, the Soviet Union, (Russia), etc., to keep their people in darkness, away from the light of God's word, and away from the eternal Light source of God himself, the Light of Jesus, the spirit of the eternal life of God himself.

God promised the coming of his dear Son in the beginning, promising the coming of Jesus, the only one who could bruise the head of the serpent, and destroy the power of the devil and his deception over men. Death was the only way that Christ could defeat the power of serpent, and the eternal life of God, Jesus, was the only Spirit that could bring that dead body back to life, to give to men the way of God. That words on that sign in California, are words of freedom concerning men who gave their lives to free others, the freedom that many men in America do not, have never really understand the depths of love of God, whereby Jesus said, "greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends," something that many Americans do not understand God is behind, to free other people from their dictators, and haters of God's gospel of Eternal life.

It is not the sign that means anything, it is the words on the sign that offend those who think of sacrifice for others is a waste of time and lives, and who want to be free, not realizing the desires of the godless, to want to rid the world of the gospel of God's Son, and who want to disguise their hatred of God, with the words of the peace sign, without the risk of their blood.

Keep the words alive, and keep those who want to keep us silent out of office, and from the the decision making process to keep our words loud and clear.  David E.

In my opinion, I prefer the sign stay. The only way it can safely stay is with money and a unified voice.  YOUR property tax money and local sales tax money is how city officials can afford to enforce local laws.

Three points should be considered:

1. RAISE FUNDS: Any structure can be brought up to a published code and approved by the city. We should create a fund to rebuild a bigger and badder sign. I'm in for $100, anyone else willing to donate their time to a save the sign campaign?

2. HONOR: Citizens from all walks of life have served with a sense of honor for their own personal reasons. Some brothers and sisters have not returned to their families from all 50 states.  A sign on every window and bumper and license plate and roof honoring soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen is a tribute to remember them and honor their families in the hope those MIA's and POW's will return home.  EVERY PERSON DESERVES TO COME HOME!

3. VOTE: Vote to create reasonable local law!  American international policy can also be changed with a vote.  Go to almost any country and you will find people like Americans but hate international policy.

HB sucks, this is sacred...instead HB should let them keep the sign and help them bring it up to code...

Please know the FACTS before impulse comments, 1. The City of HB honors our Military more than most i.e.; Monument at cityhall honoring those who have fallen for this great country, hometown hereos with banners of local residents currently serving, the Marine Foundation where the city does annual fundrasier, this can go on, from what I understand it has nothing to do with the content but the unpermitted structure itself that sits atop this business and is creating a possible hazard to those in or walking under that area, no permit means no engineering, no electrical permit, means possible hazard. Please know the facts before going viral. If the city turns thier head and that sign collapses, what do you think the headline will be then..Military is a very sensitive subject and it's great to see peaople rally for them, but this is not about the city of Huntington Beach disrespecting the Military, farthest from the truth.

HB needs to get better city officials. Shame on them. That and they are officially doing away with half of the beach's fire pits! One dumb decision after another.

My understanding that the sign has been there for thirty years. Yes, it may burn just like my older house might too. Don't you think that it would have been correct for the city to notify and DICUSS the matter rather than (apparently) giving them 2/3 days notice to take it down? Adult behavior works both ways.

Just1Guy
Just1Guy

I call BS on the claim that the City received a complaint about the sign.  Simply put, I think they are lying.

Second point, I note they don't want proof the sign is safe, just that it has been permitted and the City's coffers have grown a bit.  THAT'S the public interest?

Simple solution: Have HB city attorneys draft a document that the bar owner will sign stating Johnny's has been warned the billboard may be out of code and that the bar takes full financial responsibility should someone get hurt, including being on the hook for any suits against the city.

I love how people jump to outrage. Read the response... it has to do with the electric wiring and lighting. Needs a permit and instead of inquiring how to solve problem...owner jumped the gun and took to social media. Like most do... people read headline and jump to conclusions too. Nothing but respect to veterans... no respect to people who dont read

I don't want to thank a bunch of tards who were either too stupid or lazy to go to college and instead enlisted to go join the war machine and kill women and children while parasitically living off my tax dollars.  I don't thank them for my freedom because they did nothing to protect my freedom, unless, of course, they conflate freedom with oil.

Huntington Beach Leaders...Do you have nothing better to do??? Leave the sign and the people alone!!! It is a patriotic sign, one that expresses what many of us think and feel. It is not disruptive or obtrusive, in fact I believe that many of our vets appreciate the thought very much!!

If it's their property how is it legal for the city to order it down? The only reason I can fathom is that the the physical sign is setup wrong or something that violates building codes. Which could be easily corrected.

Funny, that idiot benjamin is blaming 'liberals' when the very republican HB city is making them do it. Funny how incredibly stupid cons are. Remember, it's conservatives who hate the troops, they love sending them to die, then try to cut their benefits.

HB code enforcement has ALWAYS had their own set of rules.....I opened "Sneetches" Tattoo (now HB Tattoo) in 1994 and code enforcement came into my business with a uniformed police officer who threatened to arrest me and throw me in jail if I didn't sign his citation for operating an illegal establishment, then the cop ripped the phone out of the wall while I was talking to my attorney. Long story short...I went to court for a year and a half to be "grandfathered" as the city actually had NO LAWS on the books prohibiting tattoo establishments. But I was told that there is a "SILENT CODE", whatever that is supposed to mean.....Traci Goodson-Smith

@beachbeast01 nice job on the legalese bud.  Any one of those signs could be unsecured.  Code enforcement is a petty thug that has it's niche and needs to feel like they are doing something for the good.

Or Turd... Just maybe you’re too big of a pussy to wear the uniform of the country that affords you with endless possibilities... AND, I don’t have to like what you’re saying but I did wear the uniform to protect your right to say it... And I'm happy that you and the two lemmings that like your comments were able to show what ungrateful asshats you really are. It really gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling that you were able to express yourself without fear of imprisonment or stoning.... Or the fact that you wrote this post in English as opposed to German or Japanese, which would have been a real possibility without those "Uneducated Parasites" as you so eloquently, put it.

Per the New York Times "At any given time in the past decade, less than 1 percent of the American population has been on active military duty, compared with 9 percent of Americans who were in uniform in World War II."

@garysgirl And when the bar burns down from their illegal sign they sue the city and receive a judgement because they allowed an unsafe sign to remain.

The bar owner should have acted like an adult and actually called and discussed this with the city before going nuclear on the internet.

@PS Gifford Heard of the First Amendment?  Political Signs are explicitly allowed in the very First Amendment of our Constitution .. and the government may not regulate them .. there is no such thing as a legal "code" governing the expression of political speech.  If it were advertising the sale of hot dogs, you MIGHT have a case.  Even if a political message is dangerous it is still allowed .. eg. if you created a political statement by making a sign rickety on purpose in order to express that the message on the sign is rickety or dangerous .. it would be allowed.  Of course anyone standing under that sign would be doing so at her own risk.

thankaveteran1

We understand your point... But we have been doing this 30 years without the need for a trophy, gold star or media attention... The media attention has brought the signs message to more Veterans so we are happy... We love your Pledge of Allegiance idea...

@GustavoArellano @Dogma The other side is that the sign is not permitted and the city had tried to contact the bar to work with them to get it permitted.  The bar did nothing.  So it has nothing to do with the content of the sign.  It has everything to do with the safety of the sign.

moosington
moosington

@squarebird1 This is a rant, and it makes no sense. The issue is the structural soundness of the sign. The city is within it's power to regulate that, regardless of the content of the sign. I agree that it's horsesh*t, but the city isn't technically doing anything out of the ordinary here.

Also, 1st Amendment rights are NOT protected when they endanger others/cause actual harm.

dtakeda1
dtakeda1

@squarebird1 That's her point.  HB is not regulating the message, they're regulating the strucure which is well within their responsibility.

thankaveteran1

@squarebird1 @jasonlap @GustavoArellano @DogmaHere are a few facts. The city gave us a simple "remove the sign in 2 days or be fined" notice. They did not request permits and did not attempt to open a discussion. On the 3rd day it was $1,000+ in fines and daily it would grow. The sign structure is 30 years old & the city should have those permits. When ownership changed 11 years ago there were permits for the signs message and no issues at that time. It should be grandfathered in as "roof top signs" were prohibited after this sign was put on the roof. At this time that is the only violation. It has been said that the roof top sign ban was for aesthetic reasons.

moosington
moosington

@squarebird1 @jasonlap @GustavoArellano @Dogma I would hope the sign stays, but what does private property have to do with the non-permitting? I own my home, it's my private property, but when I make changes to it, I'm still supposed to permit those changes.

This is just the city doing what cities do, it's an a-hole move, but it happens everywhere and Johnny's really can't do anything other than retroactively permit by having a structural architect come in and sign off on the soundness of the structure.
