Suicides (and a Suicide Attempt) Muddy the Waters in Irvine and Newport Beach

There's something in the water.

I see dead people.

No, these were not plucked from old movie posers but the cities of Irvine and Newport Beach, where two people killed themselves in or near bodies of water this week and a third tried to do the same recently.

A reader points out the body of a clothed woman was found Thursday morning at the Santa Cruz pool in Irvine's Paseo Westpark neighborhood. Irvine Police were on the scene of the presumed suicide.

"That's not something you see everyday, thank goodness," remarked the reader.

The body of a man who committed suicide was found just before 1 p.m. Tuesday at the waterline near Newport Pier, according to police, who were working their second suicide in as many days.

Like the man near the surf, another man shot himself to death about 3 p.m. Monday on a park bench at Alta Vista Drive in Newport Beach.

But back to self-slayings near water, a man suffered major wounds when he tried to end it all by shooting himself Oct. 1 on the beach at the Santa Ana River jetty. He survived.

It's hard to know what to say.  Had I been there 5-10 minutes earlier, things would have been different.  The showers were still wet from the early morning group; they typically leave the pool just before 8am to go to work.  The parking lot is always busy at that time with parents dropping off their kids at the daycare.  There's such a small time window when the pool area is empty.

R.I.P.

@20ftjesus I met you that morning, did you find out more about the incident? I was trying to follow up on this but have not read any reports….

@20ftjesus This is very strange. I live right by the pool but there was really no news on this story that I can find and didn't see it on the news. Do you know who she was? Was she a resident of the West park area? I saw all the police yesterday at about 8:30 or so and was pretty shocked to see all that activity in the pool area and by the preschool.

@planetparanormal @20ftjesus Wanna hear something really wild? As this post was going live at 6 a.m., I was listening to a rebroadcast of a Freakonomics podcast where they said there are twice as many suicides as homicides in America, but you know which one the media reports on more. (Sorry.) Then again, research suggests reporting on suicides leads to more suicides (so sorry again).

@planetparanormal The OCR printed her name and yes, she was a resident of West Park.  As I looked at her, I guessed 40's; she looked quite young, slim, lovely; she was 59 according to reports.  She was dressed in a  striped top and jeans.  The Fire Dept. and IPD were there in minutes.

@GustavoArellano Yeah, I pinged Coker with the story after I got home from the pool.  Health Dept sez it stays closed until they "super-chlorinate and change the filter" or they can drain/refill the pool.  Last I heard, they plan to change the water.

@MatthewTCoker Just out of curiosity, I assume the OCR listens to OC Fire Dept radio which must be how they found out about it?  Irvine PD is encrypted.
