ORIGINAL POST, OCT. 28, 10:52 A.M.: A 22-year-old Fullerton man who had reportedly been at a party where he was hallucinating and making comments about "zombies" and wanting a gun got a piece of one early Sunday: the bullet that took him out.

After the party, Paul Michael Bracamontes turned up yelling and screaming in the backyard of an upscale Yorba Linda home, waking the residents, according to the sheriff's department, which says the stranger was shot dead after he crashed through the rear sliding glass door and entered the residence.

The shooter's wife was actually on the phone with a 9-1-1 dispatcher when the gunfire rang out around 3:15 a.m. Sunday from the home in the 5000 block of Wendover Road, Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock told City News Service Sunday.

When deputies arrived there, the intruder was already dead inside the home from a gunshot wound. He had no relationship with the unidentified homeowners and "was a stranger to them," Hallock said.

A statement identifying Bracamontes as the dead man that was sent by Hallock to the Weekly this morning indicated the troubled fellow continued to scream and threatened to harm the homeowner before he shattered the glass, entered the home and was shot.

"Interviews with relatives of Bracamontes revealed that he attended a party early Saturday evening," according to today's sheriff's statement. "Relatives indicated Bracamontes was hallucinating earlier in the night and was heard making several inappropriate comments regarding 'zombies' and wanting a gun. Relatives stated that Bracamontes left the party and had not been seen or heard from since."

An autopsy on Bracamontes is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, but results of toxicology tests that may reveal whether or not he was under the influence at the time of the shooting will not be available for 8-12 weeks, the department notes.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff's Department at 714.647.7000. Anonymous tips may be left with Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855.847.6227 or via occrimestoppers.org.

UPDATE, OCT. 29, 10:21 A.M.: Paul Michael Bracamontes was a Cal State Fullerton junior who spent part of Saturday volunteering for a charity that helps foster children, according to loved ones who add he showed no signs of anything being off with him at the time.

Later in the day would come the party where the 22-year-old hallucinated and made strange comments about zombies and wanting a gun. It appears the fatal shooting of him early Sunday was justified, according to a sheriff's official.

Court documents indicate Bracamontes was charged with public intoxication in January, but the case was later dismissed.

I worked with Paul and he was a very caring person who did no drugs. I understand completely that the homeowner was protecting his family.. Something went terribly wrong. I wish some was there with Paul.

Psychotic/aggressive behavior with hallucinations/delusions, and the fact he crashed through a glass door, something that would normally cause pain/injury...sounds like PCP to me.

I'm guessing he might have hit some bunk weed that was laced with it. I think it makes more sense than a bad acid trip or bath salts.

first of fall that person your calling an idiot, psycho, lunatic is a human being. I hate how the news twist everything and makes this action define him as a person. I knew him and he was not a psychopath or anything you guys call him...He was a kind and caring person with a bright future ahead of him. He was a great person to always be around, so full of life...just keep in mind that the comments you make are hurtful to ALL the families and friends involved in this incident...

This is a FUCKED UP situation for both the victim and the home owner. This guy had to be on bath salts, some bad acid or something. I don't blame the home owner, no one can judge him because we weren't in his shoes when this tragedy happened. For all he knew the guy could have been a serial killing maniac or rapist. We know now he wasn't but the homeowner had NO IDEA. for everyone involved I feel sorry but especially for the dead man.THIS IS  BEYOND FUCKED UP. This guy's 'friends' need to let the cops know what drugs this dude was on, odds are it was some bad LSD or bath salts or worse. I cant imagine a sober person acting this way, but I could be wrong.  So, people if you do hallucinogens, or your friends do, make sure they are monitored and can't go off on their own roaming the streets at night onto someone's property. Where were this guy's friends, and why did they let him leave all fucked up!??!?!

Too bad he threw his life away for something so stupid. Maybe other people can learn not to be so careless with the one thing that can't be replaced, your life. There's the lesson, folks. Make safe, thoughtful choices in life, don't break the law, respect others, don't be out in the streets after 12 midnight.

8-12 weeks for toxicology. On Law and Order the detectives get in in like 3 minutes by bullying the medical examiner.

Sounds like he was out of his mind and may have just needed help not shot,

I'm sure the home owner had every right to kill the KID but did he really have to? Felt good right? Brag about huh?

If he had no weapon help was on the way wondering if he lunged at him or just shot this sick kid.

He did what he had to do to protect his family. Cant really blame a guy when some dude all hopped up comes crashing thru your back door and threatens your family's safety..sucks the guy met a fate that was probably very premature..but stupid choices got him killed..sad for all involved really...

WWRD? (What Would Rick Do) I'm just glad this Homeowner was able to protect his family. If it wasn't for him having a weapon, this could have been a even more horrible story........

@alejandra.maestro11 No one said that he was a psychopath. Being a psychopath is a permanent state of mind.  But from the homeowners point of view he was a screaming lunatic. He was screaming and acting like a lunatic and he became physically violent when he crashed through their glass door. A lunatic is a lunatic, even if for just a few hours on drugs. The people in the house can't know that he was a "kind person" with a "bright future" when they fear that they are about to get killed by him. A "kind person" on bath salts could kill someone and eat their face off, not necessarily in that order. What would he have done with with the baby if he got to it? Chances are that if the man didnt shoot him and cops got there while he was in the house threatening the family, they would have shot him too.

I like what acd_writer said. You are his friend. Some of his friends know what he took that night. They're probably all texting each other with the info right now. Do the right thing and come forward with what you know.

@trb92677 : Eff you, you idiot. How dare you CRITICIZE the homeowner and his family in this. Are you seriously stupid?

Then you go on to pretend that he BRAGGED about it. When? What news story says that? See, you are making things up. Go away. Any citizen has the right to defend themselves against harm or that of their family in any way the situation dictates. END. There is no philosophical discussion here, among true men and women who are law abiding folks. But then, that probably explains YOUR retarded comment.

You need a reality check, and probably needed some discipline when you were growing up. libtard.

@trb92677 he had a baby inside his house....you really shoudnt judge. You say he may have shot the guy to feel good or get street cred? were did you grow up?

@trb92677  Wow! BRAG about it? One of the stupidest comments ever in the great world of stupid this is the OC Weekly comments section. When a screaming lunatic breaks through your window and the only thing between him and your wife and baby is you and your gun, yeah, bragging is the first priority on your mind. Moron. More likely he is being ostracized by his neighbors and friends, people speaking in hushed whispers as he walks by, anti-gun nuts labeling him as dangerous and violent, living in fear of what the DA might put him through for political gain, spending the rest of his life feeling guilty and second-guessing his split-second choices... Chances are the guy will end up having to move away so he can get a fresh start somewhere else.
