Garden Grove Police Double Team with Checkpoints Friday and Saturday Nights

Categories: DUI-yi-yi

The Garden Grove Police Department's Traffic Unit is conducting a DUI/drivers license checkpoints from 9 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday near Brookhurst Street and Garden Grove Boulevard.

But wait, there's another one in the city where I do not recall stumbling upon gardens or groves during the same hours Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

Where?

Right here, sayeth the PD: Westmisnter Avenue and Bushard Street.

Honestly, I'm sure there are plenty of beautiful gardens and wonderful groves covering parts of Garden Grove. It's just when I'm there, my face is usually buried in dim sum. Or is that when I'm in Westminster?

The point is, Garden Grove cops say the number of alcohol-, drug- and alcohol/drug-related crashes "drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough." You may have noticed, Garden Grove has had a bunch recently.

Fear not, Garden Grove taxpayer: your police agency points to figures that show $6 is saved for every $1 spent on anti-DUI operations like checkpoints. And they are funded by grants to the city from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Let's drink to that--with sparkling cider, of course.

And if they keep it up, your taxes will go to zero and you will get a check every month from all of the savings.  Sort of like driving backwards in order to refill your gas tank.

You're an IDIOT if you think this has anything to do with drinking and driving or if you think they give a shit about your actual safety.

Checkpoints are a traffic jam and borderline unconstitutional among other things. If there are drunk drivers, cops and citizens should do their job to check them out or report them as they show up.

Nobody said you cant. Can't and shouldn't are two different things. Part of what makes us human, in fact.

The police announce them publicly just so you know. The argument that the media can't repeat it is silly.

Thanks for the info. I live in the area and will post it to facebook. My feeling is if you are driving stupid or caused an accident then fine DUI for you. Unfortunately these checkpoints are just  revenue generators and are unconstitutional.

How 'bout you just smoke a bowl, stay home, eat some cheetos and watch South Park? Sounds like a lot more fun.

Ok, I'm sick of this 'I'm a good person' bullshit. Did anyone stop to consider that maybe the reason for these articles is...drum roll please....to help the RESPONSIBLE drivers who aren't drunk, avoid the hassle of going through a check point? I know if I am sober and I get stopped, it's a waste of time sitting in line waiting for my turn. OC Weekly has done me a great service by not wasting my time when I have a drunk woman in my car who is 2 shots passed "I'm saving myself for marriage". Thank you OC Weekly for the time you have saved me.

I am so sick of OC Weekly posting check points. The way you describe them sounds like you condone and even promote drinking and driving. Absolutely stupid. People should be caught for drinking and driving. Nobody should have a warning of which route to take.

specially with people driving skills around here, im not kidding and i really dont think its funny to say this at all but i dont feel safe even crossing the street when its my damn turn! people almost ran me over twice around my neighborhood just yesterday! Once in the am and once on my way home. they need to know that pedestrians go first, specially when the light says so! also, good margaritas at casa de soto if ur not driving :)

Why warn about checkpoints? You're encouraging drunk drivers not getting caught. How about people exercise some fucking responsibility and not do it at all? People can be killed in places besides where there are checkpoints, in case you didn't know that. How would you feel if someone reads this, drinks and drives, avoids a DUI thanks to your post and then kills someone in an accident? If you drink to a level that you can't safely drive and still do so, man up and pay the consequences.

The Garlic Tacos at the Aztca Elvis Lounge will mask the smell of alcohol so well, you could pass the breathalizer! ...But not the sidewalk sobriety hopscotch while singing the alphabet backwards.

@Hanavas McGrail I do no such thing here; methinks you're exposing anti-OC Weekly bias.
