Bill To Label E-Cigs as "Tobacco Product" Postponed Until Next Year!

I'm just a bill
The Man hasn't really known what to do with e-cigarettes. The technology is so new, there are so few studies about its effects, and is that really marijuana they're smoking?! This February, California state Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett (D-East Bay) drafted SB 648, a bill that would be the first of its kind by attempting to categorize and regulate vaping by labeling e-cigs as a "tobacco product"; if that were to happen, people could no longer vape indoors, within 20 feet of an exit, or within 25 feet of a sandbox.

Thank God that ain't happening for awhile.

It passed the Senate on May 24 and sent a small wave of panic through the vaping community, who feared the domino effect of regulation. But two weeks ago, Corbett and her peers decided, rather quietly, to put SB 648 on hold. Sergio Reyes, Corbett's communications director, reports that the bill will be "maintained in the the governmental organization committee in the assembly." Um, okay...

Until next year, vapers and e-liquid juice makers will have to continue to self-regulate, and attempt to build up a positive face for their plight. For more information about the world of e-cigarettes, read of our recent news story.

there isn't any such thing as secondhand vapor - it dissipates in the air before it could reach anyone else's nostrils/lungs/etc.

Government and big tobacco companies are what's pushing this. Cigarette sells went down dramatically after the introduction of these. And if it is regulated the tobacco companies will have a strong hold/monopoly on the product. Smh. It's like pharmaceuticals...they don't really wanna help. They just want your money

Mimi, most carcinogens come from burning... Almost anything, including food like smoked meats and such. The levels of carcinogens are different based on what it is actually burning. Nicotine by itself is not a known carcinogen. Adding that to glycol propolyne which is steam or vaporized, still has not been proven either way to be harmful to direct user, or second hand.

How can something become labeled as a "Tobacco product", when the item contains NO tobacco, nor does it actually have to be lit up in order to use it!? Maybe I should start calling hotdog buns, stove potholders, because they "look" like you could hold a pot/pan with them? Idiocy.

Folks are starting to use them indoors. I'm not educated enough on e-cigs and other vapors, but I do think that this does pose cause for concern for those who are pregnant or don't want that in their system and are inhaling what someone exhales...despite the fact it's "vapors" and not "smoke."
