Controversial George W. Bush D.C. appellate court nominee Miguel Estrada is among the panelists critiquing the U.S. Supreme Court at UC Irvine Friday.

Joining Estrada on the panel are Adam Liptak of The New York Times, Joan Biskupic of Reuters and UCI Law's Mario Barnes, Erwin Chemerinsky and Doug NeJaime, with UCI Law's "Slick" Rick Hasen moderating.

In 2001, when Tegucigalpa, Honduras-born Miguel Angel Estrada Castañeda was nominated by Dubya to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Senate Democrats labeled Estrada a conservative ideologue with no experience as a judge. Unable to block the nomination when Republicans took over the Senate in 2002, Democrats used a filibuster to prevent the bid from going to a full Senate vote.

Some have cited that ordeal in holding up dozens of Barack Obama nominees currently (highlighted in the case Payback v. a Bitch). But Estrada, an attorney with the Gibson Dunn law firm these days, did the current administration a solid by writing a letter to and appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan. Actually, since Estrada and Kagan have remained friends since meeting as students at Harvard Law School, he was probably doing her the solid more than Barry.

The U.S. Supreme Court Term in Review Program runs from noon to 1:30 pm. Friday in UCI Student Center's Crystal Cove Auditorium. CLE credit is available to attendees. The event is to be webcast, and questions can be submitted to the panel via Twitter using the hash tag #ucilawscotus.
