A Eulogy for the OC Weekly Rack Destroyed During the Huntington Beach Riots

The horror, the horror...
Man, why do riots always break out in Orange County whenever I'm away? Last year, it was the Anaheim madness; this year, it was the melee that broke out after the end of the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. I'm still trying to piece together what happened, drunk on bourbon and Derby pie and white dog as I am, but what I'm most upset about right now is the above picture: the aftermath of one of our newspaper racks, destroyed by nameless, faceless monsters who obviously targeted us among our competition for the most ruthless beating imaginable--HATE CRIME!!!

It was a good rack, one that served us more than a decade and was two days away from retirement. I'd always grab a copy of our rag when I passed by--that is, when I could find a copy there, since it was always empty due to people picking up the paper.

I'm furious. To paraphrase Homer's anonymous letter to Bart after Bart had "WIDE LOAD" tattooed on Homer's ass: to whomever destroyed our rack, "I KILL U SCUM."

But, of course, the best eulogy for the rack was given by none other than Clockwork Coker, who wrote, "Among the most troubling things knocked down and battered were newspaper racks, including one of OC Weekly's that just flashed on the teevee. What kind of monster would hurt one of our innocent racks? Hasn't print taken enough of a beating already?"

The horror, the horror...

Dam,  they missed the writers and the editors of the OC Weekly. :(

The two racks that flank the Weekly rack look pretty beaten, too.

Could they be for Irvine Company "Rental Living" "Love Where You Live®" apartment guides?

If so...thankfully I have an alibi for my whereabouts on Sunday evening

That's what you get for exposing your capital equipment in the meatspace. Your box gets violated. You were asking for it.

What now?  Do you start a crowdfunding webpage to raise money to replace the crushed crate?

Definite hate crime!  That OC Register rack is looking very unscathed.

If it helps, the nameless rack next to yours has a broken window...I'm sure he has no one to remember him.

@Frank07 Hey, Frank07, you're in juvenile hall without an English teacher in sight, right? Dam in this case is spelled damn. And besides, you pimply scumbags missed the writers and editors of OCW because you were too busy cowardly putting pretty color scarves over your lil boy faces during that laughable tantrum. Why hide? Chicken? Pussy? Sniveling? You don't have answer. We all know what you are.

@rscottmoxley @Frank07 WE HAVE A WINNER!!! Mr. Moxley, you passed the exam. I really congratulate you. I am surprised that Gustaff and Mr. Cracker didn't catch that. Anyway, I totally agree rioting is bad very bad. I was never part of the dysfunctional group.  I have nothing to hide, and willingly to work out the differences in a nonviolent way.

@Dave_Lieberman @949girl I do like the OC Register's coverage of criminal jury trials because they do report on them often instead of just covering the verdict (like the OC Weekly) but not enough to pay their online fee now!  That's the only reason why I liked going on their website!

@GustavoArellano @949girl @Dave_Lieberman Yes I do!!   But what I meant was that I did like how they would cover your average run of the mill murder trial on a semi regular basis from opening statements to closing arguments and have courtroom photos.  Yes, lots of courtroom photos!  I like those lol!  It's not a criticism of the Weekly but I did find the Register would cover the more day to day of a lot of trials that weren't maybe so interesting to other people.  Well, the bigger ones yes the Weekly does cover.  I don't go on their site since I don't care enough to pay.
