Gustavo to Appear on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel TONIGHT Talking About Chivas Soccer Club!

I still can't believe this is happening, but since it's now on Facebook, it must be true: tonight, I'm appearing on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel to talk with correspondent Soledad O'Brien about the famous Mexican soccer club Chivas de Guadalajara and their laughable foray into MLS Soccer.

WHAT. THE. HELL?! How the hell did I squirrel my way into the best sports program on television, and one of my favorite series of all time? I'm still asking that question meself, and I still don't know how much airtime I'm getting, but I can tell you what the segment will be about.

O'Brien and I talking Chivas at La Golondrina in Olvera Street

O'Brien's piece will examine whether Chivas' policy of fielding a Mexican-only soccer team for its Guadalajara squad can translate into success in the United States, a country that doesn't take too kindly to any perceptions of discrimination in the workplace. I was given the task of explaining the Chivas philosophy, along with trying to give an insight into Chivas' flamboyant owner, Jorge Vergara--let's hope that my description of him as a cross between Louis B. Mayer and George Steinbrenner made the final reel or megabyte or whatever the metaphor is nowadays. I haven't seen the full segment yet, but I can say O'Brien asked great questions, is a nice person, and that it will no doubt be a great piece given everything Real Sports does is gold.

Here's the preview, sans me:

Anyhoo, Real Sports airs TONIGHT on HBO, so set your DirectTV or cable or whatever to it. And if you don't care about Chivas, you will care about another segment they're airing: a profile of Kelly Slater. Enjoy!

Gustavo Arellano: You said that for Vergara "if you disagree with him, you disagree with Mexico, and if you disagree with Mexico, You're no good, You're a racist, you might as well be an American" Shame on you that you had to inject racism into this story! Vergara might be a real piece of work himself but I've never heard him ever imply that in the media or in public. So if Mexicans that live in Mexico disagree with Vergara does that make them American racists? You are clueless. Deeply dissapointed in Soledad O'brien and HBO to allow this nonsense.

Come on people, the issue here is that Chivas-USA is letting go two of his assistant coaches because of lack of performance.  As I understand, Chivas-USA has American and European players on the team.  The Chivas-USA team from the beginning is inclusive because a policy to only have Mexican players on the team does not apply in the U.S.

Now, the Chivas team from Guadalajara, México is the most popular team in México because it is the only team in Mexico that doesn´t accept foreign players.  The only foreign players they  accept are those born in the U.S.A. or Elsewhere in  world and their parents are Mexican. Chivas (In Mexico) is the pride of the country because they push to give more oportunities for Mexican born players to join the profesional ranks as opposed to other teams who feed their teams with South American players mostly.  Rembember that México is more homogeneous than the U.S. and the racial discrimination that exists in the U.S. doesn´t necesarily exist in México. The most prevalent discrimination in Mexico is economic.

Personally, I don´t like Jorge Vergara because he has made bad decisions for the Chivas team in Mexico and I am sure he has made bad decisions in Chivas USA.

Gustavo I hope you represented the information correctly and cleared out that this has nothing to do with race and/or discrimination.  It has to do with finding the right formula to win Championships in the MLS.

Very nicely done Gustavo. You provided a pretty good context to what is a messy story.

Chivas usa has never won a championship so its time to get rid of people. So now these cry babies come up with the excuse of discrimination. If those fools would have tried harder and maybe won the championship then they would still be in Chivas usa. inche bola de pendejos!

I don't like Chivas, never have, never will. I was born in Mexico. But grew up here in the states (28 of my 30 years). Maybe it's because of that I just don't like the Mexican only requirement. How would all these Chivas fans like it if other teams refused to hire Mexican players? VAMOS XOLOS!

Vergara thinks the US is like Mexico, where he can do as he wants....but then again, is the US any different? we will see!!!!!! This will test our views of the US not being as discriminatory!

@Julian Quauhtli Yaotl Avila  I have no problem with one team only hiring Mexican players. Las chivas isnt the only team either there is other teams in the world who do the same. All the other teams in Mexico get players from everywhere else so what is the big deal. Many companies in the usa refuse to hire Mexicans or Hispanics so Hispanics are already used to it. Hispanics also have to work more for less pay.So quit crying over one team. Viva Las Chivas and I was born in Mexico, California Los Angeles.

@Omar Avendaño Correa I think all rich people feel that they can do anything no mater where there from. The us will continue to be discrimanatory infact Mexicans are the most discriminated people in this country.
